The garden of Mortella was created in the island of Ishia by Sir William Walton (1902-1983) one of the greatest English composers of the twentieth century andhis wife Susana Valeria Rosa Maria Gil Passo a great lover of nature and plants.(August 1926 — 21 March 2010 ). The gardens of their private house ,designed by the landscape architect Russell Page ,were open to the public in 1991 and ,thanks to The Walton passion and devotion ,transformed into a botanical garden and into a fascinating setting for music concerts A visit at Garden of Mortella is a very good opportunity for the lovers of nature to experience a gorgeous and luxurious landscape rich with tropical plants and rare flowers . Itis considered one of the most important Italian botanical garden because of the wealth of its collection : tree ferns, from Australia and New Zealand, Proteas and Aloes from South Africa, Yuccas and Agaves from Mexico, and also Magnolias, Camellias, , Palm trees, and so on The garden spreads for about 2 hectares and has a major collection of exotic, rare plants that is constantly widened and developed, year after year. La Mortella is divided into two parts: a lower garden, called The Valley and an upper garden on the Hill, terraced with retaining walls. The many areas of the garden are linked by a network of walks, paths, ramps and steps that climb the dry walls allowing the visitors to reach the upper hill, where they can admire a breathtaking views of the Bay of Forio.Interesting garden features are the Thai House, a quiet place of meditation surrounded by an Orient-inspired garden, with lotuses, peonies, bamboos and oriental maples Streams .ponds and fountains are scattered everywhere making the garden ideal for the cultivation of tropical water lilies ,papyrus and Lotuses The garden has three tropical greenhouses: the Victoria House, the Orchid House and the Temple of the Sun.
