„Having at our disposal very large
cultural data sets which can be
analysed automatically with
computers and explored using interactive
interfaces and visualisation opens up
new possibilities. These possibilities
can potentially transform our under-
standing of cultures in many important
ways.“

this approach does not scale.“

10461 scanlation pages from One
Piece which were available on
onemanga.com in the Fall 2009,
organized by sequence of
publication (left to right, top to
bottom). This composite image
(we call such images “montages”)
includes special pages inserted by
scanlation groups (some of them
appear as dark black squares
when you look at a small version
of the visualization). Note: To fit all
pages in a rectangular grid, some
of the pages were cropped.

Sample pages from One Piece manga series drawn from the 5th, 200th, and 400th chapters.
“Summary: When we examine only a small subset of a large image set,
our sample may not be representative of the whole set; it may not properly
reflect all variations in a set; and we may not be able to study gradual
changes over time.” (p. 259)

• scatter plot
• line graphs
• image plot

graph display the data as points and
lines. An image plot superimposes
images over data points in a graph.“
