Lyme Disease Vaccine
1. Lyme Disease Vaccine
Lyme disease has been recognized in Europe for nearly a century but was not described in humans
in the United States until 1975. Some number of dogs, nobody knows how many, seem to
seroconvert to a positive Lyme test, apparently indicating that they have contracted the Lyme
spirochete - WITHOUT ever having any symptoms. The current speculation is that SOME dogs
(nobody knows how many) may develop immunity to Lyme through natural exposure (i.e., tick bites)
without ever becoming ill. The vaccine DOES provide additional immunity, and yes, humans and
dogs CAN get Lyme more than once.
People often develop a rash at the point where the tick attached as well as flu-like symptoms. In
dogs the most common symptoms are joint pain and fever that usually do not start until 2-5 months
after being bitten. A few dogs develop swollen lymph nodes and very, very few ever develop the
heart and neurological problems seen in Lyme disease in humans. When lyme-positive dogs develop
kidney problems, it is late in the disease process.
For example, erythema migrans associated with spirochete migration from the tick feeding lesion is
relatively common among people but rare among dogs. Although the majority of naturally exposed
dogs remain clinically normal, when canine Lyme disease does occur, the most common signs are
fever, polyarthritis, lymphadenopathy, and anorexia. Whether B. burgdorferi is capable of causing
arrhythmias and neurologic signs in dogs is not clear. Lyme borreliosis in dogs and humans in the

Although classical homeopathy does not consider Lyme disease a true illness - like syphilis it is
considered a chronic miasm†caused by an immaterial substance that produces disease by
disrupting the vital force - one veterinary homeopath in Connecticut takes a different view. Dr. Tobin
says that since he began treating dogs for Lyme disease with homeopathy 10 years ago, he has
worked with an estimated 1,000 patients, nearly all with complete success.
In response, I got back a short nasty-gram from someone signed "Gil" who did not give an email
address or offer a single corrective citation to what I said. Gil Ash has a small web site about Lyme
disease in which she suggests that folks should ignore what anyone else says (including their own
veterinarian) and keep looking around until they find a vet who will take their money to do Lyme
testing, Lyme titers, and Lyme treatment.
