2. STATE OF ART AFRICAN RANGELAND
Arid and Drylands occupy 2
/3 of
Kenya
Current Management regimes
in Rangelands are:-
i. Tourisms and wildlife
ii. Commercial ranching
iii. Pastoralism
Development projects have
focused on economic models of
livestock productivity
Major investments in water
development, commercial
ranching, destocking and
conservation
3. Desertification and land
degradation is a serious threat
Scale and magnitude of
environmental decline has
reached alarming levels
Recurring drought due to climate
change is a real threat to
pastoralists livelihoods who
occupy the rangelands
Development projects based on
economic models are achieving
minimal success
ENVIRONMENTAL DECLINE OF AFRICAN
RANGELANDS
4. Knowledge revisited
Pastoral systems appear more
economically efficient than
sedentary or commercial
ranching
Rangeland condition is
dependent on grazing systems
Timing and frequency of
grazing is critical

12. REGENERATING ARICAN RANGELANDS
OUR LESSON LEARNT
Pastoralism is most effective
practice for Rangeland
conservation need to be sustained
Market driven conservation that
integrates economic, social and
environmental sustainability is
practical can be most effective tool
for African Rangelands
Building Social Capital is
precondition to any sustainable
conservation efforts
13. • Mobile pastoralism is not a "backward" means of livelihood—
laws, policies and procedures should be considered backward,
since they do not recognize the ecological and economic value of
mobile pastoralism.
• Management of livestock mobility also requires multiple
institutions working at multiple spatial scales, authorities, and
functions. To modify or create the institutional structure for a
legitimate, locally controllable transhumance, the function - not
just the structure - of new institutions must be addressed.’
• What is the role of trade as an effective instrument for
sustainable development and conservation? How can trade help
steer (rather than create obstacles for) the transition to a Green
Economy linking trade to environment conservation?
DISCUSSION
14. CONCLUSION
Pastoralism remains the most economically,
culturally and socially appropriate strategy for
Conservation in these dryland as it is the only one
that can provide a secure livelihood, conserve
ecosystem services, promote conservation and
honor cultural values and traditions
15. THANK YOU
It is possible to link conservation to livestock markets
