Everybody wants to have a mobile application, but it's not sufficient: you need to create an awesome experience for your users, your customers. You need to be future proof, and think about different markets as users needs: you never know when your application will be the next Flappy Bird. Presented live at FITC Amsterdam 2014 on Feb 24-25, 2014 More details can be found at www.FITC.ca Interactive experiences that sustain user interest and imagination For the last couple of years, Stefan Wagner has been working in the field of interactive exhibits, including installations and software that give the audience an understanding of specific (often hard to grasp) topics. Ranging between interactive design, information visualization and creative coding, Stefan learned to love the concept of putting the user in a place where he is not merely a consumer of media, but where he gets to actively and willingly explore the content presented to him – applications that sustain user interest and imagination. In the course of his studies as well as in commercial projects, he has tried to adopt this idea. In his talk, Stefan Wagner will give you an insight into the development of some of the interactive projects he has been working or collaborating on and how they managed to catch user attention by deploying realtime visuals and/or new concepts of interaction like augmented reality and gesture-based input. He gains experience points for completing noteworthy projects and goals, and every so often he levels up! Originally the idea was that it would motivate him to complete more goals, but in practice Eric found that it was better as a record of his accomplishments – i.e. it’s backward looking. So, this year he added a new piece to the quest, a “dashboard” inspired by games like Farmville and Tribez & Castlez. It’s a prominently-displayed set of goals, and his progress toward them that is updated at least weekly. Numbers keep him honest. Details at fitc.ca/screens Until now, Marketers have relied heavily on users’ explicit responses and feedback to mobile applications to determine whether their mobile commerce efforts have hit the mark. However, with so many variables, external expectations and preconceived notions weighing on people’s responses, traditional research methods like focus groups can be notoriously unreliable. So, Plastic Mobile and True Impact Marketing conducted a study that applied neuroscience to user experience to explore what users actually saw, thought and felt when following the customer journey in three transaction-based mobile applications. Neuroscience, or the study of the brain’s response to stimuli, shines a light on the grey area of users responses. By determining positive and negative emotions and attentional activation – rather than relying on people to say what they mean without any bias, influence, or other variables altering their true reaction – the study finds new insights into “engagement.” By connecting sensors to designated areas of the brain, we saw which stages of a mobile transaction elicit positive or negative emotions and which areas received the most attention. The findings can help marketers and user experience designers optimize every precious pixel.
