Pursuing your dreams and goals
Don’t let anything hold you back!
by Michael R. Ellison, cEO & founder of TriVita, Inc.
What an exciting time of the year. A time when mothers have
just been honored by their children on Mother’s Day and a time
when birth and new life seem to be evident all around us in nature
– again highlighting to us all the importance of mothers.
May is the time when we dedicate much of the VitaJournal to
women’s health. We focus our attention on the special formulations
for women, as well as feature inspiring stories of women involved
with the TriVita mission of helping others experience wellness.
I encourage you to read the article about Tina Gonda on pages 16-17. She is passionate about
wellness and helping others experience it. I trust many women will be inspired by this month’s
articles about nurturing your dreams and goals and not letting anything hold you back.
I like what Eleanor Roosevelt said: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every
experience in which you really step up and look fear in the face. You must do the thing you
think you cannot do.” Pursuing wellness and creating greater wealth for your life purposes is
an important part of your life at any age. It is not over until it’s over.
Susan and I just returned from Hawaii where we met a waitress in a little beach café who
inspired us with her story. She was already a grandmother in her mid 40s, had been divorced
from an abusive husband, and had a family to support as a waitress, but was still launching her
own Hawaiian shirt clothing line. She radiated with a special glow while telling us she wished
every woman could just hold on to their dreams and go for it no matter how improbable it
looked. I can’t wait to feature her in an upcoming VitaJournal, as it is an incredible story of
the pursuit of wellness and purpose. Oh yes, she has been introduced to TriVita and
loves our mission.
This is such a great time to be involved with TriVita after our successful kickoff of Sonoran
Bloom™ Nopalea™ in Phoenix, Arizona. This product is delivering fantastic wellness
experiences. Its main benefits are helping reduce inflammation and helping detoxify the
body while helping promote optimal cellular health.
We are going across the country introducing the Nopalea product while inviting our Members
to join our Affiliate network in helping share the Nopalea story. We are getting remarkable
testimonials from people who suffer from a wide variety of inflammation-related issues. On
page 7 you will find a list of cities we are visiting to spend time with our Members – sharing
about the product and the Share and Earn income opportunity. If you live in or near one of
the cities, this is a great time to meet us and hear about this special product, as well as ask our
Chief Science Officer, Brazos Minshew, specific questions about your interests. As our gift to

F
or women, sticks and stones aren’t the big threat
to bones – it’s osteoporosis, the disease that has a
horror movie nickname: “the bone thief.” Unlike
most horror movies, though, this health story can have
a happy ending.
First, a look at just what osteoporosis is, and who it strikes. This
“silent disease” has no outward symptoms: it gradually steals mass
and strength from bones, leaving them porous and weakened. Its
main targets? The hip, spine and wrist. The damage leaves victims
vulnerable to falls and fractures, and that can lead to even more scary
situations – including death.
While “the bone thief” can attack people of any age and either gender,
women and mature adults are most likely to be affected. Osteoporosis
is not an inevitable part of aging, and it is a big deal. One of the latest
in a long line of studies about osteoporosis indicates that in people
over age 60, any bone fracture dramatically boosts the risk of dying.
The Australian study, published in the Journal of the American Medical
Association, looked at more than 4,000 people over a period of almost
20 years, and found these dramatic results:
• After even a minor bone break like a wrist fracture, the risk
of death zoomed by 42% in women and 33% in men.
• After a hip fracture, women were twice as likely to die
than before, and men, three times as likely to die.
• These jumps in death risk lingered for years: 5 years for
all fractures, and up to 10 years after a hip fracture.
What brings on bone loss?
Time steals bone from us all. Around age 30, bone (which is living
tissue made of collagen protein and calcium phosphate, a mineral)
reaches a peak of density and strength. After that, bone starts being
lost at a faster rate than it’s created; the process really speeds up after
menopause, and continues into postmenopause due to decreased levels
of the hormone estrogen.
People most at risk are small, thin-boned Caucasian and Asian women
with a family history of osteoporosis, and their risk increases with age.
The bone-breaking risk goes up in general for people who smoke, don’t
exercise, drink alcohol, take certain medications and don’t get enough
calcium and Vitamin D.
Stop, thief! Detection and prevention
Sadly, the first clue some people get about osteoporosis stealing their
bones is a sudden fall that fractures a hip or makes a spinal vertebra
collapse. At this stage, or before, during a wellness exam, a healthcare
professional may order a bone mineral density (BMD) test. This
painless test can detect the current stage of bone loss, or identify bone
issues before they become a problem (“osteopenia” or low bone density
can be a sign of osteoporosis to come).
There are medications for osteoporosis, and several other everyday
ways that everyone can help protect their precious bones. Healthcare
professionals recommend three main strategies to turn away the bone
thief and help stay strong:

1. crank up the calcium. This
mineral is vital to bones; if you don’t get
enough over your lifetime, you’re leaving
yourself wide open to bone theft. Since
many people consume less than half
the recommended amount of calcium,
it’s important to take up the slack: eat
foods like low-fat dairy products, dark
green, leafy vegetables and calcium-
fortified foods. Taking quality calcium
supplements is also suggested for many
people. This is especially important as
we age, because our bodies become less
able to absorb calcium efficiently.
2. Dose up on “D.” Vitamin D is a key
player in helping absorb calcium and
maintaining bone health. We get it via
sunlight and foods like egg yolks and
liver. D supplements are smart for many,
especially older people and anyone during
winter months who tends to stay indoors.
3. Bone up on exercise. Any activity
that has you working against gravity is
working for your bone health; it’s called
weight-bearing exercise. You don’t have
to lift weights or run marathons: just
walk, hike, jog, climb stairs, play tennis
or dance.
Bonus: Since exercise helps improve your
muscle tone and strength, coordination
and balance, it boosts your overall
health. And, with stronger muscles and
better balance, you’ll help avoid the falls
that can lead to fractures.
Stay safe to help stay healthy
Since falling down can fracture bones, avoiding
falls is especially important for anyone with
weak or brittle bones. This is why exercise is
so helpful to stay balanced and coordinated. In
addition, these tips can help you stay upright
and safe:
• If needed, use a cane or walker
for added stability.
• Wear traction-soled shoes.
• When sidewalks are slippery,
walk on grass.
• Tread carefully on polished floors that
can be dangerously slick when wet.
• Indoors, avoid walking in socks
or slick-soled slippers.
• Don’t use scatter rugs. All carpets and
area rugs should either have skid-proof
backing or be secured to the floor.
• If possible, have handrails on both
sides of stairways.
Here’s a glimpse of the impact of
osteoporosis in North America alone:
• Affects 44 million Americans,
68% of them women.
• Affects some 1.4 million Canadians:
one in four women and more than
one in eight men over age 50.
• One of every two women and
one in four men over 50 in the
U.S. will have an osteoporosis-
related fracture in their lives.
• Almost all of the 30,000 yearly hip
fractures in Canada are caused by
osteoporosis. By the year 2030, the
number is expected to quadruple.

There are two basic types of stroke: ischemic
and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes are far more
common and occur when a blood clot stops
circulation to an area of the brain. It blocks
your blood from delivering nutrients and life-
sustaining oxygen to delicate brain tissues
downstream. In minutes the brain tissue dies.
Stroke becomes more common the older we get.
Yet, 28% of those having a stroke are under age
65. In fact, stroke can even occur in a fetus still
in the womb! What are some of the causes of
strokes among the young?
the age difference
It’s true that people most at risk for strokes are
older adults, particularly those with high blood
pressure, who are sedentary, overweight, smoke
or have diabetes. However, the exact same risk
factors that cause strokes in older adults cause
strokes in younger people.
It is more common for younger men to suffer
a stroke than younger women. It is more likely
that a person who is a member of certain racial
minority groups will suffer a stroke than a
Caucasian. The greatest disparity in risk occurs
in young African-Americans who are two to
three times more likely to experience a stroke
than their Caucasian peers.
Vascular disease and high blood pressure are
common risk factors for strokes. High blood
pressure contributes to 70% of all strokes.
Smoking and drug abuse dramatically increase
the likelihood of strokes. Stress, depression and
migraines also contribute to stroke risk.
Solutions to strokes
Lifestyle modifications can really help you reduce
your risk of a stroke. If you eat a diet full of fruits
and vegetables, low in salt and bad fats, you will
reduce your risk. Exercising every day will reduce
your risk. Of course, abusing drugs, including
tobacco and alcohol, must be strictly avoided.
Losing weight, achieving optimum fat-to-lean
ratio and stabilizing blood sugar and cholesterol
are all important steps in reducing your risk.
In addition, nearly all people at risk for strokes –
young or old – have disturbances in their
blood chemistry. A homocysteine level above
10 umol/L increases your risk; the higher the
number, the greater your risk. Fortunately, stroke
risk can be reduced among young and old with a
few, special nutrients – especially HCY Guard®
.
Lives can be saved for literally pennies a day!
S.t.R.o.k.E. – Remember the first
three letters... S.t.R.
Many effects of a stroke can be reversed if it is
quickly recognized, diagnosed and treated. Now
doctors say you can often recognize a stroke by
asking three simple questions:
S Ask the individual to SMILE.
T Ask the person to TALK and speak
a simple sentence coherently.
R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of
these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe
the symptoms to a dispatcher.
Strokes don’t just affect older people
anybody can have a stroke – even an infant!

one stroke that
hit close to home
TriVita’s own keala Stant
had a stroke at age 28
Many people think that strokes only happen
to the old and infirm. In fact, anyone –
even infants – can have them. Keala Stant,
operations manager for TriVita’s Care Center,
can attest to that. At age 28, this otherwise
healthy mother of two children suffered a
stroke that seemed to come out of nowhere.
“I always considered myself athletic so it was
unexpected,” she says. “Later, I discovered
that I had certain conditions that increased
my chances for a stroke, including migraine
headaches and a heart defect.”
Keala was getting ready for work one morning
in September 2008 when she had difficulty
talking and her left side went numb.
Assuming that she would feel better, Keala
went ahead and dropped her kids off at
school. However, once she arrived at work
Keala’s condition worsened and she realized
she needed help. Keala was able to call an
ambulance and she was rushed to the
hospital, where extensive tests revealed
that she had suffered a stroke.
Luckily, Keala’s recovery was quick. Her speech
quickly returned to normal and the feeling in
her fingers and hand eventually came back.
Keala also had surgery to repair her heart. She is
tremendously grateful to her TriVita co-workers
who held a prayer session on her behalf. “I don’t
think I would have done as well without their
prayers,” says Keala. “Now I’m taking action
to make sure this doesn’t happen again by
watching what I eat and exercising 30 minutes
a day.”

“I have finally come to the
realization of how much my
mother means to me. As a
stay-at-home mom of three
children, I am now reminded
of how much she did for me
and my siblings. She was also a stay-at-home
mother of three. We went hiking and swimming
every weekend and rode horses and dirt bikes.
I truly show my appreciation and love to her
regularly. I call my mother at least every other
day. I never forget her birthday or anniversary.
When the kids and I go to the park we always
call to see if she would like to join us; when
the parade comes every summer she’s invited,
and of course every fall we go to the fair
together. Every spring the kids and I spend
several days helping my mom clean her flower
beds and start her garden. I occasionally buy
my mom a bouquet of flowers, but I feel that
the time my mother and I spend together is
the most valuable gift. I always tell my mother I
love her and always thank her for all her help.”
Susan Wright,

“My mom is the type of
woman who ‘never needs
anything,’ so it took me until
my late 20’s to learn how my
mother received appreciation.
I think this is a key factor in
our relationships as everyone is different.
How I like to show appreciation isn’t always
the way that is important or most effective to
someone else. So when I learned that my mother
loves to receive gifts (could be a wildflower
picked by the stream) I started sending her little
‘just because’ gifts throughout the year (could
just be a card letting her know I appreciate her).
For major holidays like Mother’s Day and
her birthday, I really try to pick a gift through
her eyes – what is it she would really like if
she were here doing the picking for herself.”
Janine theiss,
TriVita Employee
“My mother is the most
important woman in my
life. Growing up as a young
girl my mom was always
there for me to talk with,
share special times and be
my all-around best friend. She was a huge
support for me and I always respected her
opinion and wanted her approval.
In September 1988 at age 22 I was diagnosed
with cancer. My mom was there holding
my hand the whole way. She took me to my
doctor’s appointments and told me I was going
to be OK. Within two months I had already
had five surgeries to try and clear the cancer.
The week before Thanksgiving I went in for
my final surgery. Still my mom kept telling me
I was going to be OK.
Waking up from that surgery, I remember
her leaning over my bed with tears in her
eyes telling me she wished it was her in that
bed and not me. She rubbed my face so gently
and said with a quiver in her voice, ‘Janine,
you’re going to be OK now.’ I have been free
and clear from cancer for 20 years because my
mom told me I was going to be OK. Mothers
know everything. I call my mother every
morning at 7:15 a.m. on my way to work to
see what she is doing for the day and if there
is anything we need to catch up on.
She is the Angel that watches over me.
I LOVE YOU MOM!”

icycling is a great aerobic exercise that
is easy on the body. And, not only will
you burn calories, but you can enjoy the
outdoors at the same time. Enjoy biking alone or
with friends and family. But first, here are some
tips to get you started.
Picking the right bike
Depending on your fitness and comfort level,
as well as where you want to ride, you have
numerous bicycle options – everything from
“comfort” bikes to mountain bikes. Visit local
bike shops and research online to find out what’s
available. Check consumer ratings to find out
which bikes others have been pleased with –
and which ones to avoid.
Most importantly, you will want to consult
an experienced salesperson to help you find
the bike that’s right for you: the right type –
and the right fit. If you don’t have the right size
bike, injuries and accidents are more likely to
occur. Above all, pick a bike that is comfortable,
especially the seat. If possible, try to rent a bike
similar to the one you’re interested in; take it for
a test run to see how it works for you.
Safety first: wear a helmet
A bike helmet is a must. Be sure to choose one
that is certified by the Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC) or the American National
Standards Institute (ANSI). Also, make sure it:
• Sits level on your head
• Fits snugly
• Is brightly colored for increased visibility
Getting started
If you’re not used to riding, don’t try to go for
miles on your first ride – unless you want to be
so sore the next day that you can’t move! Start
out reasonably and gradually increase your pace
and distance.
It’s always fun to exercise with friends. Consider
joining a biking club in your area. A quick
Internet search or visit to a bike shop can help
you find a biking group. The Internet and bike
shops are also great resources for bike
path/trail information.
Be sure to follow state and local laws governing
biking – both in the city and on trails. These
laws may include everything from where you can
legally ride your bike to which safety equipment
is required.
log miles – without leaving
your home
If you prefer to exercise indoors or if you have
balance problems, you can get all the benefits of
bicycling without leaving your home. Stationary
bikes are a great exercise tool you can use from
the comfort of your home – and, bad weather
won’t stop you!
Check with local sports equipment retailers
to find the best stationary bike for you.
Recumbent bikes are becoming very popular;
they have a more comfortable seat than
traditional stationary bikes and put even
less strain on your joints.
If you’re feeling adventurous, try a spin class
at your gym. Accompanied by music, a spin
instructor will lead you through different
workouts that simulate hills, sprints and more.
It’s a great workout – and you can meet new
friends at the same time.
• Ride defensively; assume cars
don’t see you
• Ride with traffic, never against it
• Obey traffic signs and signals
• Wear a helmet
• Make sure you have a headlight and
rear reflectors for night riding
• Keep your bike in good condition
• Use hand signals to let others know
your intentions
• Wear reflective clothing
• In town, ride on the far right unless
turning left
• On trails, yield to pedestrians and horses
• Stay off sidewalks; they are more
dangerous to bikers than the street
• Ride in bike lanes where available

f you’ve been supplementing with
Vitamin B-12, you know why
you continue to make this smart
health move. You may find that this
amazing vitamin helps you stay upbeat
and maintain a balanced mood, keep
energy levels steady throughout the
day, stay mentally sharp and enhance
memory. But the potential benefits
don’t stop there. Research continues
to find new and exciting connections
between B-12 and many aspects of
good health, and I’d like to focus on
one in particular that made headlines
just a few months ago.
It was a small but significant study, publicized
in medical journals and some mass media.
From the University of Oxford, England came
this dramatic finding: People with lower levels of
Vitamin B-12 were six times more likely to have
brain volume loss (also called brain erosion) than
those with higher B-12 levels.
This was a long-term study, spanning five years,
involving 107 adults ages 61 to 87. The objective
was plain and simple: What’s the link between
Vitamin B-12 levels and brain erosion? To find
the answer, according to results published in
the medical journal Neurology, participants
underwent annual blood tests, MRIs, physical
exams and memory tests. None of the study
subjects had any impairment in mental function
when they began the project.
Less B-12 equals more brain erosion
At the end of the five years, all the participants
had B-12 levels within the normal range;
however, the differences in brain volume were
significant between those in the normal-low
range and those in the normal-high range.
Again, those people with the lowest levels
of B-12 were six times more likely to suffer
measurable brain erosion than those with the
highest levels.
As an advocate of B-12 supplementation with
TriVita’s unique, quality formulations, I was
thrilled – but frankly not surprised – to learn
about this latest evidence.
For some time, clinical evidence has shown
that those who have a B-12 deficiency can
experience symptoms caused by decreased
mental and nerve functioning. These symptoms
can include mental confusion and forgetfulness,
mood swings and even psychotic behavior like
seeing and/or hearing things.
Because of these associations, one of the first
things I do when people complain of these
problems is make sure they are getting enough
of the essential vitamins like B-12.
Why many are at risk

thyroid, liver or kidney problems, you’re at
risk for B-12 deficiency. As we age, our bodies
may become less able to absorb some vitamins
efficiently, especially in the case of Vitamin
B-12. Without enough B-12, other vitamins
like folate and B-6 cannot function normally
within the body.
As a doctor, I know the importance of
maintaining appropriate levels of these
essential vitamins, especially Vitamin B-12.
That’s why I applaud those who supplement
their healthy diets with TriVita Sublingual
B-12 products, and encourage others to see
how they might benefit, too.
Unlike injections, or pills that you swallow,
Sublingual B-12 dissolves under the tongue.
That’s the painless, easy way to make sure
it gets into your bloodstream to give you
maximum absorption and maximum benefit.
On top of all the other proven benefits of
B-12, who wouldn’t also want their brain to
stay the biggest and healthiest it could be?
SUCCESS STORIES
“I was at my worst and the Super B-12
turned all of that around.”
“About a year ago I had a lot of
anxiety issues because I was
a college professor, who was
simultaneously writing several
books, being a mom and also
a wife. Needless to say, I was
under a lot of stress!
I went to many doctors – some as a friend, some
as a patient. They would all keep telling me that
I have depression, anxiety or that it was in my
head. Basically, I had all these labels put on me,
but what I knew was that I was very TIRED – I felt
like I was constantly dragging.
When TriVita started offering Super Sublingual
B-12, I ordered it and immediately began to feel
like another person. Since then, my mood has
been more stable, I sleep better and I’m feeling
more energy! I am exercising more and even
losing weight because now I have the energy and
stamina to exercise for a longer period of time.
My clarity of mind is also back!
Based upon my results, I’ve become passionate
about this tremendous Super Sublingual B-12
product. I know many women like me and I want
to reach out to them and let them know about
it. Even people who know me ask, ‘Oh, did you
take your B-12 today?’ because they can tell the
difference. When I was not taking it, I was crabby,
cranky and miserable. I was at my worst and the
Super B-12 turned all of that around. It keeps me
from being irritable and helps me be more calm
and happier. Just one Super B a day makes a
world of difference.”

Going gluten-
free may help
with allergies
By Christa Orecchio, Certified Clinical Nutritionist,
Holistic Health Counselor
G
luten, as you
may know, is
the protein in
wheat, rye and barley
that causes intestinal
problems for people
who are allergic to
it. Since it’s found in
most of the grain-based products we
eat like bread and pasta, it can be
tricky to avoid.
Studies from the Celiac Disease Foundation
indicate that 1 in 167 children and 1 in 111
adults have gluten allergies, yet most take
years to figure it out. Knowing the symptoms
of a gluten allergy can speed up your diagnosis
process so you can start feeling better fast. Any
of the following concerns are good reasons to
test for gluten sensitivity/intolerance:
• Chronic fatique syndrome
• Mouth ulcers
• Unexplained weight loss
• Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms
• Anemia
• Crohn’s Disease
• Diverticulitus
• Attention Deficit Disorder
• Depression
• Skin problems
• Autism
• Irritability
The fastest way to diagnose a gluten allergy
(or any other food allergy) is to get a Food
Sensitivity Test done to see exactly which foods
you are allergic to and how allergic you are.
These blood serum tests cost between $125-$250.
Happily, there are increasingly more gluten-free
options available in health food stores, and
these products will soon make their way onto
the shelves of conventional grocery stores. In an
economy where grocery store sales are reported
down in all categories, sales of gluten-free foods
are up, and steadily climbing.
Gluten-free eating requires education and a
bit of vigilance at first. It is important to know
that oats, rye and barley contain gluten. The
food manufacturers can have many names for
gluten, including but not limited to hydrolyzed
plant or vegetable protein, MSG, malt, malt
flavoring, durum and semolina. However, there
are many delicious whole foods alternatives
to choose from. With a little knowledge of
what you can eat and where to find gluten-free
products and recipes, you will soon adapt to
this new lifestyle and will be feeling better
than you thought possible.
For those who love to bake, gluten-free baking
is a bit of an art form, but can be done. Gluten
is that magic element that adds structure and
stability to desserts and breads, making them
chewy. Rest assured you don’t need to sacrifice
that delightful consistency. Here is a great
gluten-free flour recipe:
Alison’s Gluten-Free Baking Mix
4 cups brown rice flour
4 cups tapioca flour
2 cups potato starch (not potato flour)
2 cups arrowroot powder
Combine all ingredients. When converting
your own recipes, use a blend of half gluten-free
baking mix and half whole-grain gluten-free
flour, except for pastry recipes, such as pie crust,
when the mix should be used as is.
Quinoa Almond Blueberry Muffins
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Add to bowl:
6 eggs
1/4 cup coconut oil, liquified
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. alcohol-free almond extract
2 Tbs. honey or agave
Beat with electric mixer, then add:
6 Tbs. almond butter
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
4 Tbs. coconut flour, sifted
1 cup quinoa flakes
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. baking soda
Beat again. Stir in 1 cup chopped or slivered
nuts and blueberries.
Fill unbleached paper muffin cups about 3/4 full.
Bake for 15 minutes.

the calcium debate –
and what it means to you
Calcium is an essential nutrient for all animal
and plant life. It begins life as a mineral called
calcium carbonate – a rock. Plants extract
calcium salts (calcium chloride) and use them
in creating energy. As the food chain continues,
herbivores (plant-eating animals) consume the
plants and concentrate the calcium into both
liquid and solid states. Solid calcium helps create
hard, compact tissues like teeth and bones.
Liquid calcium resides inside your cells, nerves
and all of your muscles – including your heart!
Every time a muscle contracts it uses calcium.
There is also calcium in your bloodstream.
The debate about calcium begins with the
source: Is calcium from stone (carbonate), oyster
shell or eggshell as good as calcium from fruits
and vegetables? Is calcium from milk and beef
equivalent to calcium from nuts and fish? There
is no simple answer; however, certain forms of
calcium are good for certain applications.
Calcium from bone meal and MCHC
(found in abundance in VitaCal-Mag D) helps
strengthen teeth and bones. Studies have shown
that MCHC may improve and increase bone
density as much as 6% in a single year! Let me
repeat this: In clinical trials where bone density
is measured, the greatest benefits to our teeth
and bones came from MCHC. There’s another
reason for the high quality of VitaCal-Mag D; it
contains five different forms of chelated calcium
for maximum absorption.
Reversing osteoporosis
MCHC is the specific collagen in your
bones. You’ll find it in both VitaCal-Mag D
and TriVita’s Bone Builder. It makes sense
to supplement your bones with this special
collagen. Even more remarkable is the fact that
people who take enough MCHC build new,
healthy bone cells even into their senior years.
Homocysteine (HCY) breaks up collagen and
reducing HCY is critical to preventing osteo-
porosis. TriVita’s Bone Builder is the perfect
partner to HCY Guard®
because it includes
nutrients that help reduce homocysteine.
Reducing the effect of stress is important in
conserving your bones. When you are under
stress your body’s response is to steal minerals
from your bones to fuel the “fight or flight”
response. TriVita’s Bone Builder contains the
amino acid GABA, which helps reduce this
effect of cortisol and allows minerals to go
back into your bones when you sleep.
Speaking of sleep, your body produces a hormone
called NAMOT (related to melatonin) when you
are in a deep sleep. This hormone signals your
bones to begin repairing themselves. Metho-
xytryptamine (5MT) is the protein that your
pituitary gland uses to produce NAMOT, and we
include this vital protein in TriVita’s Bone Builder.
Growing new bone
The best way to manage osteoporosis is to
prevent it. Children and adults up to age 30
should take a calcium, magnesium and Vitamin
D supplement every day. I also encourage people
to focus their diet on leafy, green vegetables, get
at least 20 minutes of direct sunshine on 40% of
their body every day and perform weight-bearing
exercises most days of the week.
Regardless of your age or bone density you can
slow bone loss, delay the disease process of
osteoporosis and start producing new, healthy
bone cells. TriVita’s VitaCal-Mag D is ideal for
people under 30 years old and those with the
lowest risk factors. TriVita’s Bone Builder is
designed for people over 30 who have risk factors
for osteoporosis.
The good news is that you can add back up to
6% of new, healthy bone mass every year if you
follow these steps – no matter how old you are
or how thin your bones are. Turn back the clock
on osteoporosis with proper lifestyle choice and
intense nutrition.

ina feels blessed by her
continued good fortune.
She is a successful business-
woman who is prospering with
several entrepreneurial ventures.
Tina and her husband, Mark, are the
proud parents of a happy, healthy
10-year-old boy. She is completely
dedicated to good health and
strongly believes in the rejuvenating
power of TriVita® products. “I can’t
even begin to describe how much
these products have enhanced our
quality of life,” she exclaims. “We all
feel so much healthier since TriVita
became part of our lives, and I’m
thrilled this is the sort of company
that allows me to share my product
experience with others.”
Tina first discovered TriVita when she was
looking for potential health solutions on
the Internet. She became intrigued by the
company and went on an immediate “crash
course” to learn everything she could about
TriVita. “I was very impressed by their 10
Essentials for Health and Wellness,” says
Tina. “These simple, yet powerful thoughts
are the summation of everything I’ve tried to
accomplish in my own life. I have embraced
wellness, and these basic principles help me
focus on what’s really important in my life.”
She is especially enthusiastic about Essential

at local health food stores. But now that
she’s done her homework Tina realizes the
big difference between TriVita products
and many other store-bought brands. These
high standards are summarized by the 10

Super Sublingual B-12
“This is one amazing product,” she says.
“I could feel the difference only days after
starting it. Super Sublingual B-12 has

omegaPrime®
Tina understands how important it is to
include essential fatty acids in the diet. There
may be many options on the shelves, but
OmegaPrime is her first choice. Why? Because
this product offers high quality ingredients,
including a premier blend of essential fatty
acids from fish, flaxseed, evening primrose and
perilla seed oil. “My hair and skin look better
than ever since I started taking OmegaPrime,”
she enthuses. “I also know that OmegaPrime
is really good for my heart.”
VitaDaily AM/PM™
This vitamin is on Tina’s “must take”
list because it includes 25 whole food
concentrates, 13 vitamins and 5 minerals.
Plus, each multi-vitamin is scientifically-
formulated and physician-approved. No
synthetic vitamins for her!
Adaptogen 10 Plus®
She says simply, “I love it. A one-ounce
serving is really good for my immune system
and digestion.” Tina has noticed that
Adaptogen 10 Plus helps with her stress.
Energy now!®
“I’m a real go-getter,” Tina explains, “but
sometimes even my energy flags. That’s when
I reach for Energy Now! instead of coffee. It
doesn’t interfere with my sleep or give me the
jitters. I get a nice little boost of energy and
the healthy ingredients, including green tea

Digestive complex
Tina notes that this product offers enzymes
and probiotics that are excellent for the
digestive system and help fight off bad
bacteria. She even bought a bottle for her
mother who just raves about the product.
Vital c crystal tablets
Tina regularly takes these easy-to-swallow
tablets at night to help protect her heart. She
says, “I want to look as young as I can and
Vital C helps with the health of my skin.”

Tina feels a real boost after taking this
vitamin-rich product. She recommends
the following recipe: mix one scoop of

“Whatever Tina takes, hubby takes,” she says.
Her husband, Mark has added Daily Men

doctor praised his good health during his
annual exam and encouraged him to “keep
doing whatever you’re doing.” He’s an avid
road cyclist, so good nutrition is essential to
his active lifestyle.
Tina is especially thrilled with the academic
progress of her 10-year-old son, Marcus, since
he started taking Sublingual B-12. “Within
three weeks of taking Sublingual B-12 there
was a big improvement in my son’s school
work,” she relates. “Marcus is also sleeping
much better at night.”
Of course, Tina understands that it takes
much more than supplements to enjoy good
health. All three family members enjoy bike
riding, walking and boating. Says Tina, “I
just love enjoying the great outdoors with my
family.” She also has her own fitness routine
which includes the spin bike, treadmill and
weight system.
Above all, Tina associates with like-minded
people who are positive and committed to
wellness. “I don’t focus on all the doom
and gloom in the daily news,” Tina says,
“just the possibilities of living a life filled
with purpose.”

Many of us take our vision for granted – until
we start to notice that we can’t see street signs
as well as we used to or that we have to bring
menus and books a little bit closer to read.
Although vision does tend to worsen over time,
we can take proactive steps today to keep our
eyes as healthy as possible tomorrow.
the sun: eye enemy #1
As people head out to enjoy warmer weather,
there’s often something they forget to take with
them: eye protection. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV)
rays can be just as harmful to your eyes as it
can be to your skin. In fact, it can actually burn
your corneas. Over time, the cumulative damage
caused by UV rays can result in cataracts,
macular degeneration and even blindness.
As you head outside, take steps to help prevent
UV damage and keep your eyes healthy.
• Select sunglasses that block 99% to
100% of UV rays.
• For added protection, wear a hat that
covers your eyes.
• Wear sunglasses even on overcast
days and in the winter.
• Don’t judge sunglasses by their color or
cost; wear sunglasses that block UV rays.
• Protect your children and grandchildren
from harmful UV rays. Supply them with
sunglasses and hats, too.
computer eye strain
If you work at a computer all day, or even spend
a few hours a day in front of one, you know that
it can make your eyes hurt. Blurriness, dryness
and even less acute vision can result. These tips
and exercises from the National Institutes of
Health Division of Occupational Health and
Safety can give your eyes a much-needed break:
Monitors and eye glare
• Position monitors away from direct
lighting which creates excessive glare
or use a glare filter over the monitor
• The top of the viewing screen should
be at eye level when the user is sitting
in an upright position (Bifocal wearers
may need to lower the monitor a couple
of inches)
• Close drapes/blinds to reduce glare
Eye exercises and stretches
• Blinking and yawning (produces tears
to help moisten and lubricate the eyes)
• Expose eyes to natural light
Eye movements
1. Close eyes
2. Slowly and gently move eyes up to the
ceiling, then slowly down to the floor
3. Repeat three times
4. Close eyes
5. Slowly and gently move eyes to
the left, then slowly to the right
6. Repeat three times
Focus change
1. Hold one finger a few inches away
from the eye
2. Focus on the finger
3. Slowly move the finger away
4. Focus far into the distance and
then back to the finger
5. Slowly bring the finger back to
within a few inches of the eye
6. Focus on something more than
eight feet away
7. Repeat three times
As you enjoy the sunny weather or surf
the Internet, take steps to preserve your
eyes – they’re the only ones you’ve got!

A
s generations come and go, so
much of their history goes with
them. Today, you can make sure
the stories of you and your family do not
go untold. With current technology and
resources, you can easily document your
own personal piece of history.
tell your story
It’s easy to record important moments and
important people that make up your life story
with the help of websites like storyofmylife.
com. You can create a website and invite
others to share pictures, video, documents
and much more. You control:
• Access to your site
• Privacy levels
• When material may be viewed (there
is a time capsule feature that allows
you to give an exact day when you
will allow your material to be shared)
You can organize your story in a number of
ways: chronologically, by category or even by
daily journaling/blogging.
Research your genealogy
Not that familiar with your family history?
Many people enjoy researching their
genealogy. If this is the route you want to go,
you will have plenty of help on the Internet.
Countless sites are dedicated to this research;
some sites’ central purpose is to list other
genealogy sites! There are even sites that will
tutor you in researching your ancestry.
A goldmine of information can be found at
the National Archives website (archives.gov).
They suggest starting your genealogy research
by interviewing family members to obtain the
following information:
• Names of ancestors, their spouses
and their siblings
• Dates of birth, marriage, death
and divorce
• Town, county, state or province and
country where these events occurred
Then, you can dig in! At archives.gov, you
can access (or learn how to access) a variety
of sources that come from all areas of the
federal government.
• Census records
• Military service records
• Immigration records
(ship passenger lists)
• Naturalization records
• Passport applications
• Land records
• Bankruptcy records
Keep in mind that the United States Census
does not release information it collects for 72
years, so the latest information available is
from the 1930 Census.
Fill in the branches on your
family tree
Once you’ve gathered some information, you
may want to begin filling in a family tree. You
can find many resources online to help you,
including family tree software. Free family tree
templates are also available. These range
from actual trees to graphs and flowcharts.
Preserving oral family histories
Some of the best stories and memories never
get recorded. Preserve this history for future
generations by recording oral histories. You
can collect anecdotes about Grandpa, or get a
detailed description of Grandma’s experience
during the war. The possibilities are endless!
You can even interview your children or grand-
children and record their child-like voices; this
will be a treasure when they get older!
1. Determine what the topic(s) will be
2. Decide who you’re going to interview
3. Prepare a list of questions
4. Choose the best method of recording
the answers (e.g., tape recording
device, notes)
Get creative with your oral histories; have the

“I began taking Leanology products
and it only took me three months
to achieve my desired weight of 145
pounds – a loss of 27 pounds. This
was a welcome surprise because
I had tried many different weight
loss programs in the past, but they
just would stop working after a
point and I couldn’t lose any more
weight. With Leanology, however,
I could just keep losing weight
– I’m really sold on it.
I have also referred Leanology
to six different women and it
is working for all of them. Two
of my sisters lost 20 pounds
each, and my other sister, while
losing only seven pounds so far,
is still pleased because she’s losing
inches. Plus, my sister-in-law and
niece have lost 15 pounds each.
One of the great things about
Leanology is the way it helped
me lose weight and reshape
my body. Leanology has helped
me lose inches everywhere – I’ve
lost 25 inches total. But it has
especially helped me lose those
stubborn inches around the
abdomen, which up until now,
was impossible to do. My improved
figure is one of the things other
women are noticing. In fact, several
women from church noticed the
changes and approached me.
I ended up referring three more
women to TriVita for Leanology.
I’m really pleased by my own
progress. After reaching my desired
weight I am now having great success
maintaining my ideal weight.
I’m also thrilled by the success of
my niece with Leanology. She
had a problem with cholesterol
and since starting the product,
her level has dropped 100
points. My niece says it has to be
Leanology because she doesn’t
like taking medications and isn’t
taking anything for cholesterol.
There’s an unexpected benefit
to my slimmer new look. Now,
others are coming to me and asking
how I was losing weight. I have
been referring them to Leanology
and earning some very nice
monthly cash rewards.”

M
any women gain weight around the
middle in their mid-40s, early 50s
and beyond. This accumulation of
fat in the abdominal area has been dubbed
the “menopot.” The exact cause of this weight
gain has been blamed on a number of things
including genetics, fluctuating hormones and
reduced physical activity.
The good news? With healthy lifestyle
changes, you can help control – and reduce
– the dreaded menopot. This is good news
not just from a vanity standpoint but from
a health standpoint as well: abdominal fat
– especially what’s called visceral fat – can
increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes
and even certain cancers.
Visceral fat surrounds your organs, can be
very dangerous and is the result of a sedentary
lifestyle. The menopot is generally composed
of subcutaneous fat, the fat that lies between
your skin and your abdominal wall. Although
less dangerous than visceral fat, it can still be
distressing. The bottom line is that any type of
fat is unhealthy.
Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise,
can not only help reduce the risks to your
health, but they can also help “whittle your
middle” – and help you minimize the menopot.
Burn away the menopot
Reduced physical activity can contribute to
increased weight in the menopause years. Plus,
as people age, they lose lean muscle tissue,
which burns calories. By maintaining or even
increasing your activity level, you can help
keep the menopot at bay.
The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for
Americans from the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services suggests
that adults get at least 2.5 hours a week of
moderate-intensity physical activity or 1.25
hours of vigorous physical activity per week.
If you’ve already noticed you’re getting a
menopot, you may want to increase that
amount to 5 hours a week of moderate-
intensity activity or 150 minutes of vigorous
activity... or more! Be sure to include both
aerobic and strength (resistance) training.
The key to consistent activity is doing some-
thing you enjoy. Make exercise fun with some
of these calorie-burning activities:
• Swimming
• Bicycling
• Dancing
• Gardening
• Walking
• Tennis
The menopot menu
Your metabolism naturally slows down with
age. This means fewer calories are needed
to sustain your current weight. However,
many people may continue to eat the same
amount of food. So, it comes down to the
old adage: To lose weight, you must burn
more calories than you consume. But that
doesn’t mean you have to go hungry!
A study at Pennsylvania State University
showed that eating foods that fill you up
with water and fiber can help you lose weight.
Participants in the study who ate more
low-energy-dense, water-rich foods such as
fruits and vegetables, lost more weight than
participants who went on diets that reduced
portion size and fat intake.
Follow these basic diet principles from the 2005
Dietary Guidelines for Americans (issued by the
USDA and Health and Human Services) to get
on the right track:
• Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole
grains and fat-free or low-fat milk
and milk products
• Include lean meats, poultry, fish,
beans, eggs and nuts
• Eat foods low in saturated fats, trans
fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and
added sugars
Need some food ideas? Try adding these
tasty and healthy foods to your diet:
	 • Chicken breast • Fish fillets
	 • Lean beef • Lean turkey
	 • Lean pork • Salmon
	 • Asparagus • Bell pepper
	 • Broccoli • Cabbage
	 • Cauliflower • Carrots
	 • Celery • Green beans
	 • Spinach • Squash
	 • Beans • Bran/fiber cereal
	 • Brown rice • Oatmeal
	 • Pita bread • Wheat germ
	 • Apples • Bananas
	 • Blackberries • Blueberries
	 • Cherries • Cranberries
	 • Grapefruit • Grapes
	 • Kiwi • Nectarines
	 • Oranges • Raspberries
	 • Tomatoes • Zucchini
By increasing your exercise and sticking to a
well-balanced diet that is high in fiber, whole
grains, and fruits and vegetables, you can help
minimize the menopot. For extra help, try
Leanology® – the Smart Weight Loss System.
Minimize the
“Menopot”
Menopause weight gain is not inevitable
All love begins
with having a
sense of value and
appreciation of one’s
self. Each of us, male
and female, must
have a feeling that
we matter and have
significance. This feeling develops
out of our earliest life experiences
and shapes our core self-value as
an adult.
Healthy self-love
Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, suggested
2,000 years ago that before you can give and
receive love you must first be a lover of
yourself. Aristotle considered a healthy self-
love the foundation on which all relationships
are built. In an article by therapist Sarah Leah
Blum, she states, “Loving yourself is the
greatest love of all and we all need to love
ourselves to have a full, healthy, balanced life.”
Love addiction and
toxic relationships
However, many people do not have a
healthy start in life and their needs went
unmet by their primary caregivers. Either
from childhood neglect or abuse, they have
an “empty hole” in their heart.
Quite often, such people look for the feeling
of love in all the wrong places. They become
addicted to the feeling of love to fill the empty
hole. When we think of addiction we think of
alcohol, drugs, gambling and food, but love is
a powerful feeling and is a primary emotion
that can be as addictive as cocaine.
While men aren’t immune, it’s more often
women who are in unhealthy relationships,
recognize that it is bad for them, but are
unable to break it off. Here are some
questions to consider if you wonder about
your relationships:
• Do your family and friends tell
you they are concerned for you?
• Do you make up your mind to leave
and go right back again when you
feel lonely?
• Does the relationship make you
miserable but has an unnatural
hold on you?
If you answered yes to any of these questions,
you may have a love addiction.
If you think that you may be in a toxic
relationship there is always hope. Admitting
the truth is the first step, followed by seeking
out expert support to regain emotional health.
Romantic love
Healthy romantic love is a wonderful
experience, which can encourage bonding and
intimacy. A woman’s need for love can be
fulfilled by being held and caressed and told
how much she is loved and appreciated. It is
essential for a man to put his feelings of love
for her into words.
This can be difficult for many men. On
average, according to some experts, a man
speaks only 2,000 words a day compared to
7,000 words spoken by a woman. A woman
likes to talk and especially about her feelings.
She wants to know she’s pleasing her man and
that he loves being with her.
Men who find it difficult to say the words
might try these techniques to start “talking”
and sharing more with their partners. Start
writing love letters. Once or twice a month,
share your feelings with your spouse. Find
pretty blank cards and write your messages
of love.
Saying “I love you” is the most beautiful
gift you can give. These words are the
most treasured anyone can hear.

“...A wife of noble
character... is worth
far more than rubies.”
– Proverbs 31:10
Since May marks Mother’s Day throughout
North America, I thought it fitting to make
women the topic of this month’s feature. It’s
also fitting that a woman, Pastor Judith Crist
of City of Grace Church in Arizona, shares
her insights on spirituality and women today
in this exclusive VitaJournal interview.
Judith Crist has served
alongside her husband, Dr.
Terry Crist, as one of the
Executive Pastors of City of
Grace since it was founded.
Her passion is to see people
discover and live the
abundant life found in Jesus
Christ. Judith attended
Ayers Music Conservatory in Dallas, TX and
also majored in music ministry and Biblical
studies at Jackson College of Ministries in
Jackson, MS.
chaplain Gene: What does “virtue” mean
to you?
Pastor Judith: To me, virtue is the inside
source and force of goodness that we can
cultivate for the purpose of influence. My
perspective is from both the Old and New
Testaments and the real world we live in.
chaplain Gene: In Proverbs 31, we read of a
“virtuous woman” whose noble character has
her working from dawn ‘til dusk, planting fields,
weaving cloth and tending to the needs of her
family. How does this translate to women in
the 21st century?
Pastor Judith: Proverbs 31 can leave a negative
and positive impression. The negative is that
some may look at these tasks as a “to do” list; a
woman might think that it sets an impossible
standard, so why try?
your body, his temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20
Virtue and today’s woman:
Tapping into “the inside source
and force of goodness”
by Chaplain Gene Henderson
The positive impression is the advice the
woman is giving to her son: she’s counseling
him on the kind of woman he should seek out.
She is actually taking the limits off who a
woman can be, not saying every woman has
to be it all. The woman described has found
her wisdom and confidence and has developed
her resources: she’s gained the respect of her
family, her peers and interacts with those in
government and business. She is cultivating
her skills to influence her world... really, to
fulfill her purpose.
chaplain Gene: So you don’t see Proverbs 31
as restricting women?
Pastor Judith: No, on the contrary, it releases
them. We don’t have to be men to make a
difference, to be leaders. We can be uniquely
who God designed us to be. When we have
confidence and the humility to take Godly
coaching, women can be an unstoppable force.
Remember, the Proverbs 31 woman didn’t just
sit back and wait for things to happen. She
really embodied what you might call “proactive
engagement” in her world.
chaplain Gene: You mentioned virtue in the
New Testament; please explain.
Pastor Judith: Virtue also stands out in the
New Testament, Luke 8:40-48, when an ailing
woman in a crowd reaches out to touch Jesus’
garment. Jesus says that he felt the virtue flowing
out of him to her and she was healed. If we
partner with God, we will have the source and
force of goodness that brings the transformation
that God wants.
This power for transformation is not about
rebellion, or hard-hearted arrogance. It’s the
confidence in the God that created us, the faith
that He will use us, and that He will bring His
solutions through us.
chaplain Gene: Women today have experience
filling many roles: businessperson, co-worker,
partner, parent, caregiver for aging parents,
friend, well, the list goes on. Is it possible to
really focus on your life purpose when you wear
so many hats?
Pastor Judith: Absolutely. We may think our
lives are busier than in Biblical days, but the
guiding principles for virtue and purpose really
remain unchanged. I have two guideposts for
purpose in life: The first is God’s Word; since He
created us He is the only one who has the right
to define us. The second is our gifts, our talents,
the things that give us passion.
Mother Teresa used her passion, her goodness to
serve, and was heard. That’s not just about the
life of women; that’s the Christian way.

with osteopenia, or thinning of
the bones, in my lumbar area. I
also had a lot of pain associated
with the osteopenia. When I
walked it was really painful and
I walked like I was 80 years old! I tried various
medications but they didn’t work. So I tried
Bone Builder when it came out. I have had two

bones are fine. Plus, now I can walk without the
pain! I had a friend try the Bone Builder, and she
loves it, too.”

“I haven’t had night sweats since
I began the Balanced Woman.”
“The prescription that my doctor gave me for
my night sweats just wasn’t working. Plus, I was
very apprehensive about taking the hormones,
since I had heard so many negatives about them.
I was having a terrible time sleeping and getting
migraines quite often. I began taking TriVita’s
Balanced Woman and I’m so very impressed!
I’m feeling a lot better. Not only am I sleeping
better, but I’m actually dreaming more, which
means I’m going into R.E.M. sleep and getting
a more rejuvenating sleep. I get migraines less
often and when they do come, not as severe.
I haven’t had night sweats since I began the
Balanced Woman. Now, my doctor wants to
place an order for it, too! Thanks, TriVita!”

“In about 5 weeks I’ve lost 21 pounds.”
“My daughter convinced me to
try Leanology. In the last 10
years I had gone up 4 sizes. I
live in an apartment that has a
lot of stairs, and lately going up
them has been really hard on my
knees. I also have neuropathy with my diabetes.
In about 5 weeks I’ve lost 21 pounds. I usually
drink two Leanology shakes a day. I make mine
with fat free milk and often add a sliced banana
or a handful of frozen blueberries or mixed
berries. I take the capsules in the morning and in
the afternoon. They help me not to be hungry. I
don’t nibble anymore.
After I lost some of the weight, I had the energy
to join a water aerobics class. But the best part is
that my doctor says that I might be able to go off
my insulin by the first of the year. I can’t wait to
give you my next update!”*

“It really helps with the stress I have.”
“I started taking Adaptogen 10 Plus during the
trial period. It really helps with the stress
I have from taking care of my 3-year-old and
4-year-old grandkids. The Adaptogen 10 Plus
also gives me the energy I need to keep up with
their demands. With the Adaptogen I can stay
up until 10:30 or 11 o’clock at night, and I noticed
that I get a lot more done late at night, after the
kids are in bed. I also sleep better! My mind is
clearer and I’m not so forgetful.”

“... since taking the Sublingual B-12 our son has
become calmer...”
“Our son would get these wheezing attacks
from his condition the doctors call ‘croup variant
asthma’ in which we would have to take him to
the emergency room. The worse attacks would
come upon him from November through April.
Our son was taking multiple prescriptions, and so
we ordered the Sublingual B-12 as well as other
vitamins from TriVita to help restore his immune
system and keep him calmer and focused. We were
so happy our son likes the flavor of the Sublingual B-12, because we want him
to take it every day. We never have a fight with him taking the Sublingual B-12
like we did with the medicines. The great news is since taking the Sublingual
B-12 our son has become calmer and hasn’t gotten as anxious or as agitated,
which has kept him from having any more of these attacks. His last wheezing
attack was December 2007. Thank you, Lord, for letting us find out about
TriVita’s fantastic products.” Anna S. – St. Petersburg, FL

“... my bone density actually improved 4%! I was thrilled!”
“I’m 65 years old. Several years ago I had a bone scan and was diagnosed with
osteopenia. My doctor put me on a prescription medicine. I tried it for awhile
but stopped taking it.*
My doctor suggested I take 1,500 mg of calcium a day instead. I was very
interested in Bone Builder when it became available and started taking it.
Just a couple of weeks ago I had another bone scan. The technician said that
they sometimes see improvement of 1% or so, but my bone density actually
improved 4%! I was thrilled! I really believe that improvement is attributed to
Bone Builder because I’ve taken the extra calcium for awhile but only recently
saw these improvements. The technician asked for information about Bone
Builder because they said it normally takes 1 to 1 1/2 years for bones to rebuild,
and see that 1% improvement, so I was just thrilled with the results. It says a
lot for your product!”

any of us get stressed out
by such small things as
getting stuck in traffic or
watching our favorite sports team
lose a game. But few of us have to
endure the level of daily stress that
the men and women in the military
go through every day – especially
those who are serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan. And how about the
stateside families who try to live
normal lives while their loved ones
are in danger?
One such person is Josh, who just completed
his second tour of duty in Iraq. A six-year
veteran, he enlisted after college to fight
terrorism. The 9/11 events had a huge impact
on him and he felt it was his generation’s duty
to come to the aid of their country. “I’m proud
of my service in the U.S. Army, Special
Operations and feel honored to serve this
great nation,” Josh says. He and his wife,
Kate, are looking forward to the birth of
their baby in July.
What Josh does to stay healthy
Like so many of us, Josh tries to eat the
right foods and take nutritional supplements.
This becomes extremely difficult in Iraq where
soldiers don’t always have access to nutritious
foods and fresh fruits and vegetables – especially
when they are far away from their “home base.”
Luckily, Kate and her mom regularly send Josh
“CARE” packages packed with TriVita products.
Dr. Libby’s Vital C Crystals and Tablets help
maintain his immunity during his constantly
stressful situation. These products also play
a key role in flushing impurities from Josh’s
system. He adds Optima4®
to his shake every
morning to give himself a much-needed boost
of energy and more mental clarity for 15-
hour days. “Of course,” says Josh, “This is
very important when I’m on life and death
missions.” Digestive Complex™ with its eight
food-grade enzymes helps ensure complete
digestion. Other members of Josh’s platoon
have become curious about his continued
good health and he has generously shared
TriVita products with them.
Good health begins at home
Kate also makes sure she maintains her
good health while Josh is overseas. “I use
Sublingual B-12 consistently because it
is good for me and helps with mental
clarity,” she says. “I also take Vital C and
that’s a big reason I haven’t been sick
for over a year. Both Josh and I are very
active and we also keep at least two jars
of Quick-Relief™
Gel on hand. This
product helps tremendously with muscle
aches and pains.”
The psychological strain of Josh’s long
absences can be hard for the entire
family. Says Kate, “The important thing is to
stay busy. I plan several activities with friends
weekly, because it’s important to have something
to look forward to. I’ve been so fortunate
because friends and family have visited while
Josh has been away, and it’s always nice to have
the company for a few days at a time.”
triVita is “all in the family”
Kate’s mom, Sue, is an Affiliate Member
who has risen to the Director level. All of
her siblings are Affiliate Members; her oldest
brother just graduated from medical school
and her youngest brother is in osteopathic
medical school. They both use TriVita
supplements, especially Sublingual B-12 and
Vital C. Kate’s sister, Christian was featured
in the Affiliate Member version of the March
2009 VitaJournal. Her dad takes several
TriVita supplements; her grandmother is a
healthy 86 thanks to her daily regimen of
Vital C, Sublingual B-12 and VitaCal-Mag D™
.
“Our entire family loves TriVita food
supplements,” Kate concludes. “We’re very
grateful that they’ve helped keep Josh and
his entire family healthy during his tour of
duty in Iraq.”

women who have served or are currently serving
in the armed forces.

In the U.S., Memorial Day was
originally established to honor those

declared the last Monday in May
a national holiday, and it serves to
honor those who have died in all
American wars.
In Canada, the Monday nearest

It’s official: Exercise helps improve quality of life
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
It’s commonly believed that exercise improves quality of life but few studies have set out to prove it...
until now. Researchers in Baton Rouge discovered that as little as an hour of exercise per week can help
improve quality of life.
The six-month trial, which appeared in the February 2009 Archives of Internal Medicine, involved 430
physically inactive, postmenopausal women with high blood pressure. The women were divided into a
non-exercising group, and three exercising groups that walked and rode stationary bikes. The first group
exercised about an hour a week, the second for two hours per week and the final group exercised about
three hours per week.
Women in the exercise groups reported better perceived health, increased energy and a better sense of
well-being. The women in the three-hour per week exercise group reported the greatest improvements.
Researchers found that even if the women lost no weight as a result of the exercise, they still experienced
improvements in quality of life.
Diet soda linked to diabetes and metabolic syndrome
Houston, Texas
Drinking at least one diet soda a day may increase your risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, said a
study published in the January 2009 Diabetes Care. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors which
together increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Study results showed that those who drank diet soda daily had a 67% greater risk of diabetes and a 36%
greater risk of two components of metabolic syndrome – high fasting glucose and high waist circumference.
Researchers concluded, “Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with other
dietary and lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control and eventual diabetes.”
Unhealthy lifestyle habits can double your risk of stroke
Norfolk, United Kingdom
Poor lifestyle choices can double your risk of stroke, according to researchers in the February 2009 British
Medical Journal. Smoking, excessive drinking, physical inactivity and low blood Vitamin C levels – indicating
low intake of fruits and vegetables – were evaluated.
Over 20,000 men and women aged 40–79, part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer Study
(EPIC), completed health and lifestyle questionnaires between 1993 and 1997. They had no history of stroke
or heart attack at the beginning of the study, and were followed an average of 11 years. Participants were
given a point for each of the following lifestyle habits: not smoking, drinking only 1 to 14 units of alcohol per
week, exercising regularly and blood Vitamin C levels that indicated a daily intake of five servings of fruits
and vegetables.
Those who scored zero points had a 2.3 greater risk of stroke than those who scored four. The more points partici-
pants had, the more their risk of stroke decreased. Significantly more women than men scored a total of four points.

flOSSInG can REDucE GuM DISEaSE-
cauSInG bacTERIa
New York, New York
Adding floss to your tooth-brushing regimen can help reduce
bacteria that cause gum disease, according to a recent study
in the Journal of Periodontology.
Researchers from New York University College of Dentistry
studied 51 pairs of twins aged 12–21 for the study. For a two-
week period, one twin brushed teeth and tongue and the
other twin brushed teeth and tongue and flossed.
After two weeks, it was discovered that the twins who had
not flossed had significantly more gum disease-causing bacteria
than the twins who had brushed and flossed. Additionally,
those in the flossing group experienced a 38% reduction in
gum bleeding.
Researchers concluded that “tooth and tongue brushing plus
flossing significantly decreased the abundance of microbial
species associated with periodontal disease and dental caries
[cavities] after a 2-week program.”
The research was part of a five-year study funded by the
National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
calORIE RESTRIcTIOn IMPROVES MEMORy
Münster, Germany
Cutting calories may improve memory, it was reported in
the January 2009 The Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.
The three-month study involved 50 normal to overweight
adults ranging in age from 50 to 72. Participants were divided
into three groups: one group had their calories reduced by
30%, another had a 20% increase in unsaturated fatty acids
without changing their total caloric intake, and the third
group did not change their diet.
A memory test was administered both before and after the
study. Those in the calorie restriction group showed an average
20% improvement in their verbal memory scores. Researchers
suggest these improvements may be attributable to improved
insulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation, both of which
play a part in improved cognition.

you for attending this 90-minute event, we are giving
away a free 32 oz bottle of Nopalea, as well as a DVD
about the healing plants in the Sonoran Desert.
Some people are a little unsure if they have the ability to
participate as an Affiliate Member. Well, it is as simple as
sharing a DVD with someone. The whole premise is not
about being a salesperson, but about getting involved in
helping people discover they can have greater wellness
by doing some pretty basic things and taking a product
like Nopalea. It could be as simple as just inviting a few
friends over for a Nopalea tasting party and watching the
DVD in your home.
I have been on this mission for 10 years. I want people
to experience greater wellness. I want to raise up a
grassroots movement of people who are excited about
sharing wellness with others. Again I say this: North
Americans’ deteriorating health is not just about the
effects of aging. We are experiencing the results of
unhealthy lifestyles that seriously affect our health. For
the first time in American history, children from ages
1-10 are not expected to live as long as their parents
because of the disease issues they face. Nor are they
expected to have the same quality of life over those years.
I find that deplorable – yet it is reversible if we can create
enough voices in the marketplace. Will you join us?
Mark Twain said it best: “Twenty years from now you
will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do
than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in
your sails. Explore – dream and discover!”
There is a greater degree of wellness possible for all of
us – especially for our children and grandchildren. We
must pursue wellness!

Ellison, cEO & founder of TriVita, Inc. What an exciting time of the year. A time when mothers have just been honored by their children on Mother’s Day and a time when birth and new life seem to be evident all around us in nature – again highlighting to us all the importance of mothers. May is the time when we dedicate much of the VitaJournal to women’s health. We focus our attention on the special formulations for women, as well as feature inspiring stories of women involved with the TriVita mission of helping others experience wellness. I encourage you to read the article about Tina Gonda on pages 16-17. She is passionate about wellness and helping others experience it. I trust many women will be inspired by this month’s articles about nurturing your dreams and goals and not letting anything hold you back. I like what Eleanor Roosevelt said: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really step up and look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Pursuing wellness and creating greater wealth for your life purposes is an important part of your life at any age. It is not over until it’s over. Susan and I just returned from Hawaii where we met a waitress in a little beach café who inspired us with her story. She was already a grandmother in her mid 40s, had been divorced from an abusive husband, and had a family to support as a waitress, but was still launching her own Hawaiian shirt clothing line. She radiated with a special glow while telling us she wished every woman could just hold on to their dreams and go for it no matter how improbable it looked. I can’t wait to feature her in an upcoming VitaJournal, as it is an incredible story of the pursuit of wellness and purpose. Oh yes, she has been introduced to TriVita and loves our mission. This is such a great time to be involved with TriVita after our successful kickoff of Sonoran Bloom™ Nopalea™ in Phoenix, Arizona. This product is delivering fantastic wellness experiences. Its main benefits are helping reduce inflammation and helping detoxify the body while helping promote optimal cellular health. We are going across the country introducing the Nopalea product while inviting our Members to join our Affiliate network in helping share the Nopalea story. We are getting remarkable testimonials from people who suffer from a wide variety of inflammation-related issues. On page 7 you will find a list of cities we are visiting to spend time with our Members – sharing about the product and the Share and Earn income opportunity. If you live in or near one of the cities, this is a great time to meet us and hear about this special product, as well as ask our Chief Science Officer, Brazos Minshew, specific questions about your interests. • 4. trivita.com4 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness F or women, sticks and stones aren’t the big threat to bones – it’s osteoporosis, the disease that has a horror movie nickname: “the bone thief.” Unlike most horror movies, though, this health story can have a happy ending. First, a look at just what osteoporosis is, and who it strikes. This “silent disease” has no outward symptoms: it gradually steals mass and strength from bones, leaving them porous and weakened. Its main targets? The hip, spine and wrist. The damage leaves victims vulnerable to falls and fractures, and that can lead to even more scary situations – including death. While “the bone thief” can attack people of any age and either gender, women and mature adults are most likely to be affected. Osteoporosis is not an inevitable part of aging, and it is a big deal. One of the latest in a long line of studies about osteoporosis indicates that in people over age 60, any bone fracture dramatically boosts the risk of dying. The Australian study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at more than 4,000 people over a period of almost 20 years, and found these dramatic results: • After even a minor bone break like a wrist fracture, the risk of death zoomed by 42% in women and 33% in men. • After a hip fracture, women were twice as likely to die than before, and men, three times as likely to die. • These jumps in death risk lingered for years: 5 years for all fractures, and up to 10 years after a hip fracture. What brings on bone loss? Time steals bone from us all. Around age 30, bone (which is living tissue made of collagen protein and calcium phosphate, a mineral) reaches a peak of density and strength. After that, bone starts being lost at a faster rate than it’s created; the process really speeds up after menopause, and continues into postmenopause due to decreased levels of the hormone estrogen. People most at risk are small, thin-boned Caucasian and Asian women with a family history of osteoporosis, and their risk increases with age. The bone-breaking risk goes up in general for people who smoke, don’t exercise, drink alcohol, take certain medications and don’t get enough calcium and Vitamin D. Stop, thief! Detection and prevention Sadly, the first clue some people get about osteoporosis stealing their bones is a sudden fall that fractures a hip or makes a spinal vertebra collapse. At this stage, or before, during a wellness exam, a healthcare professional may order a bone mineral density (BMD) test. This painless test can detect the current stage of bone loss, or identify bone issues before they become a problem (“osteopenia” or low bone density can be a sign of osteoporosis to come). There are medications for osteoporosis, and several other everyday ways that everyone can help protect their precious bones. Healthcare professionals recommend three main strategies to turn away the bone thief and help stay strong: lock out “the bone thief” Protect your bones from osteoporosis Osteoprosis is not an inevitable part of aging, and it is a big deal. This mineral is vital to bones; if you don’t get enough over your lifetime, you’re leaving yourself wide open to bone theft. Since many people consume less than half the recommended amount of calcium, it’s important to take up the slack: eat foods like low-fat dairy products, dark green, leafy vegetables and calcium- fortified foods. Taking quality calcium supplements is also suggested for many people. This is especially important as we age, because our bodies become less able to absorb calcium efficiently. 2. Dose up on “D.” Vitamin D is a key player in helping absorb calcium and maintaining bone health. We get it via sunlight and foods like egg yolks and liver. D supplements are smart for many, especially older people and anyone during winter months who tends to stay indoors. 3. Bone up on exercise. Any activity that has you working against gravity is working for your bone health; it’s called weight-bearing exercise. You don’t have to lift weights or run marathons: just walk, hike, jog, climb stairs, play tennis or dance. Bonus: Since exercise helps improve your muscle tone and strength, coordination and balance, it boosts your overall health. And, with stronger muscles and better balance, you’ll help avoid the falls that can lead to fractures. Stay safe to help stay healthy Since falling down can fracture bones, avoiding falls is especially important for anyone with weak or brittle bones. This is why exercise is so helpful to stay balanced and coordinated. In addition, these tips can help you stay upright and safe: • If needed, use a cane or walker for added stability. • Wear traction-soled shoes. • When sidewalks are slippery, walk on grass. • Tread carefully on polished floors that can be dangerously slick when wet. • Indoors, avoid walking in socks or slick-soled slippers. • Don’t use scatter rugs. All carpets and area rugs should either have skid-proof backing or be secured to the floor. • If possible, have handrails on both sides of stairways. Here’s a glimpse of the impact of osteoporosis in North America alone: • Affects 44 million Americans, 68% of them women. • Affects some 1.4 million Canadians: one in four women and more than one in eight men over age 50. • One of every two women and one in four men over 50 in the U.S. will have an osteoporosis- related fracture in their lives. • Almost all of the 30,000 yearly hip fractures in Canada are caused by osteoporosis. By the year 2030, the number is expected to quadruple. the bone toll in north America: $15.9 billion 1 2 3 Buy One BoneBuilderget the second one50% oFFgood through 5-31-09

Ischemic strokes are far more common and occur when a blood clot stops circulation to an area of the brain. It blocks your blood from delivering nutrients and life- sustaining oxygen to delicate brain tissues downstream. In minutes the brain tissue dies. Stroke becomes more common the older we get. Yet, 28% of those having a stroke are under age 65. In fact, stroke can even occur in a fetus still in the womb! What are some of the causes of strokes among the young? the age difference It’s true that people most at risk for strokes are older adults, particularly those with high blood pressure, who are sedentary, overweight, smoke or have diabetes. However, the exact same risk factors that cause strokes in older adults cause strokes in younger people. It is more common for younger men to suffer a stroke than younger women. It is more likely that a person who is a member of certain racial minority groups will suffer a stroke than a Caucasian. The greatest disparity in risk occurs in young African-Americans who are two to three times more likely to experience a stroke than their Caucasian peers. Vascular disease and high blood pressure are common risk factors for strokes. High blood pressure contributes to 70% of all strokes. Smoking and drug abuse dramatically increase the likelihood of strokes. Stress, depression and migraines also contribute to stroke risk. Solutions to strokes Lifestyle modifications can really help you reduce your risk of a stroke. If you eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables, low in salt and bad fats, you will reduce your risk. Exercising every day will reduce your risk. Of course, abusing drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, must be strictly avoided. Losing weight, achieving optimum fat-to-lean ratio and stabilizing blood sugar and cholesterol are all important steps in reducing your risk. In addition, nearly all people at risk for strokes – young or old – have disturbances in their blood chemistry. A homocysteine level above 10 umol/L increases your risk; the higher the number, the greater your risk. Fortunately, stroke risk can be reduced among young and old with a few, special nutrients – especially HCY Guard® . Lives can be saved for literally pennies a day! S.t.R.o.k.E. – Remember the first three letters... S.t.R. Many effects of a stroke can be reversed if it is quickly recognized, diagnosed and treated. Now doctors say you can often recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S Ask the individual to SMILE. T Ask the person to TALK and speak a simple sentence coherently. R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to a dispatcher. Strokes don’t just affect older people anybody can have a stroke – even an infant! By Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer one stroke that hit close to home TriVita’s own keala Stant had a stroke at age 28 Many people think that strokes only happen to the old and infirm. In fact, anyone – even infants – can have them. Keala Stant, operations manager for TriVita’s Care Center, can attest to that. At age 28, this otherwise healthy mother of two children suffered a stroke that seemed to come out of nowhere. “I always considered myself athletic so it was unexpected,” she says. “Later, I discovered that I had certain conditions that increased my chances for a stroke, including migraine headaches and a heart defect.” Keala was getting ready for work one morning in September 2008 when she had difficulty talking and her left side went numb. Assuming that she would feel better, Keala went ahead and dropped her kids off at school. However, once she arrived at work Keala’s condition worsened and she realized she needed help. Keala was able to call an ambulance and she was rushed to the hospital, where extensive tests revealed that she had suffered a stroke. Luckily, Keala’s recovery was quick. Her speech quickly returned to normal and the feeling in her fingers and hand eventually came back. Keala also had surgery to repair her heart. She is tremendously grateful to her TriVita co-workers who held a prayer session on her behalf. “I don’t think I would have done as well without their prayers,” says Keala. “Now I’m taking action to make sure this doesn’t happen again by watching what I eat and exercising 30 minutes a day.” s t r
  • 10. Heather Andrews, Member “I have finally come to the realization of how much my mother means to me. As a stay-at-home mom of three children, I am now reminded of how much she did for me and my siblings. She was also a stay-at-home mother of three. We went hiking and swimming every weekend and rode horses and dirt bikes. I truly show my appreciation and love to her regularly. I call my mother at least every other day. I never forget her birthday or anniversary. When the kids and I go to the park we always call to see if she would like to join us; when the parade comes every summer she’s invited, and of course every fall we go to the fair together. Every spring the kids and I spend several days helping my mom clean her flower beds and start her garden. I occasionally buy my mom a bouquet of flowers, but I feel that the time my mother and I spend together is the most valuable gift. I always tell my mother I love her and always thank her for all her help.” Susan Wright, affiliate Member “My mom is the type of woman who ‘never needs anything,’ so it took me until my late 20’s to learn how my mother received appreciation. I think this is a key factor in our relationships as everyone is different. How I like to show appreciation isn’t always the way that is important or most effective to someone else. So when I learned that my mother loves to receive gifts (could be a wildflower picked by the stream) I started sending her little ‘just because’ gifts throughout the year (could just be a card letting her know I appreciate her). For major holidays like Mother’s Day and her birthday, I really try to pick a gift through her eyes – what is it she would really like if she were here doing the picking for herself.” Janine theiss, TriVita Employee “My mother is the most important woman in my life. Growing up as a young girl my mom was always there for me to talk with, share special times and be my all-around best friend. She was a huge support for me and I always respected her opinion and wanted her approval. In September 1988 at age 22 I was diagnosed with cancer. My mom was there holding my hand the whole way. She took me to my doctor’s appointments and told me I was going to be OK. Within two months I had already had five surgeries to try and clear the cancer. The week before Thanksgiving I went in for my final surgery. Still my mom kept telling me I was going to be OK. Waking up from that surgery, I remember her leaning over my bed with tears in her eyes telling me she wished it was her in that bed and not me. She rubbed my face so gently and said with a quiver in her voice, ‘Janine, you’re going to be OK now.’ I have been free and clear from cancer for 20 years because my mom told me I was going to be OK. Mothers know everything. I call my mother every morning at 7:15 a.m. on my way to work to see what she is doing for the day and if there is anything we need to catch up on. She is the Angel that watches over me. • 11. 1-800-991-7116 B icycling is a great aerobic exercise that is easy on the body. And, not only will you burn calories, but you can enjoy the outdoors at the same time. Enjoy biking alone or with friends and family. But first, here are some tips to get you started. Picking the right bike Depending on your fitness and comfort level, as well as where you want to ride, you have numerous bicycle options – everything from “comfort” bikes to mountain bikes. Visit local bike shops and research online to find out what’s available. Check consumer ratings to find out which bikes others have been pleased with – and which ones to avoid. Most importantly, you will want to consult an experienced salesperson to help you find the bike that’s right for you: the right type – and the right fit. If you don’t have the right size bike, injuries and accidents are more likely to occur. Above all, pick a bike that is comfortable, especially the seat. If possible, try to rent a bike similar to the one you’re interested in; take it for a test run to see how it works for you. Safety first: wear a helmet A bike helmet is a must. Be sure to choose one that is certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Also, make sure it: • Sits level on your head • Fits snugly • Is brightly colored for increased visibility Getting started If you’re not used to riding, don’t try to go for miles on your first ride – unless you want to be so sore the next day that you can’t move! Start out reasonably and gradually increase your pace and distance. It’s always fun to exercise with friends. Consider joining a biking club in your area. A quick Internet search or visit to a bike shop can help you find a biking group. The Internet and bike shops are also great resources for bike path/trail information. Be sure to follow state and local laws governing biking – both in the city and on trails. These laws may include everything from where you can legally ride your bike to which safety equipment is required. log miles – without leaving your home If you prefer to exercise indoors or if you have balance problems, you can get all the benefits of bicycling without leaving your home. Stationary bikes are a great exercise tool you can use from the comfort of your home – and, bad weather won’t stop you! Check with local sports equipment retailers to find the best stationary bike for you. Recumbent bikes are becoming very popular; they have a more comfortable seat than traditional stationary bikes and put even less strain on your joints. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a spin class at your gym. Accompanied by music, a spin instructor will lead you through different workouts that simulate hills, sprints and more. It’s a great workout – and you can meet new friends at the same time. • Ride defensively; assume cars don’t see you • Ride with traffic, never against it • Obey traffic signs and signals • Wear a helmet • Make sure you have a headlight and rear reflectors for night riding • Keep your bike in good condition • Use hand signals to let others know your intentions • Wear reflective clothing • In town, ride on the far right unless turning left • On trails, yield to pedestrians and horses • Stay off sidewalks; they are more dangerous to bikers than the street • Ride in bike lanes where available May 2009 l 11 BikinG SAFEtY tiPS A bike helmet is a must. • 12. Scott Conard, M.D., is the founder of TienaHealth, an organization of medical doctors in primary care practice who emphasize healthy lifestyles to maintain wellness. Dr. Conard is considered a national expert on disease prevention. TienaHealth also conducts clinical trials. Scott Conard, M.D. Founder, TienaHealth I f you’ve been supplementing with Vitamin B-12, you know why you continue to make this smart health move. You may find that this amazing vitamin helps you stay upbeat and maintain a balanced mood, keep energy levels steady throughout the day, stay mentally sharp and enhance memory. But the potential benefits don’t stop there. Research continues to find new and exciting connections between B-12 and many aspects of good health, and I’d like to focus on one in particular that made headlines just a few months ago. It was a small but significant study, publicized in medical journals and some mass media. From the University of Oxford, England came this dramatic finding: People with lower levels of Vitamin B-12 were six times more likely to have brain volume loss (also called brain erosion) than those with higher B-12 levels. This was a long-term study, spanning five years, involving 107 adults ages 61 to 87. The objective was plain and simple: What’s the link between Vitamin B-12 levels and brain erosion? To find the answer, according to results published in the medical journal Neurology, participants underwent annual blood tests, MRIs, physical exams and memory tests. None of the study subjects had any impairment in mental function when they began the project. Less B-12 equals more brain erosion At the end of the five years, all the participants had B-12 levels within the normal range; however, the differences in brain volume were significant between those in the normal-low range and those in the normal-high range. Again, those people with the lowest levels of B-12 were six times more likely to suffer measurable brain erosion than those with the highest levels. As an advocate of B-12 supplementation with TriVita’s unique, quality formulations, I was thrilled – but frankly not surprised – to learn about this latest evidence. For some time, clinical evidence has shown that those who have a B-12 deficiency can experience symptoms caused by decreased mental and nerve functioning. These symptoms can include mental confusion and forgetfulness, mood swings and even psychotic behavior like seeing and/or hearing things. Because of these associations, one of the first things I do when people complain of these problems is make sure they are getting enough of the essential vitamins like B-12. Why many are at risk of B-12 deficiency If you’re over 40, a strict vegetarian, or have B-12 update by Dr. Scott Conard Research shows the positive connection Big, healthy brains and B-12 ...clinical evidence has shown that those who have a B-12 deficiency can experience symptoms caused by decreased mental and nerve functioning. trivita.com12 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness

As we age, our bodies may become less able to absorb some vitamins efficiently, especially in the case of Vitamin B-12. Without enough B-12, other vitamins like folate and B-6 cannot function normally within the body. As a doctor, I know the importance of maintaining appropriate levels of these essential vitamins, especially Vitamin B-12. That’s why I applaud those who supplement their healthy diets with TriVita Sublingual B-12 products, and encourage others to see how they might benefit, too. Unlike injections, or pills that you swallow, Sublingual B-12 dissolves under the tongue. That’s the painless, easy way to make sure it gets into your bloodstream to give you maximum absorption and maximum benefit. On top of all the other proven benefits of B-12, who wouldn’t also want their brain to stay the biggest and healthiest it could be? SUCCESS STORIES “I was at my worst and the Super B-12 turned all of that around.” “About a year ago I had a lot of anxiety issues because I was a college professor, who was simultaneously writing several books, being a mom and also a wife. Needless to say, I was under a lot of stress! I went to many doctors – some as a friend, some as a patient. They would all keep telling me that I have depression, anxiety or that it was in my head. Basically, I had all these labels put on me, but what I knew was that I was very TIRED – I felt like I was constantly dragging. When TriVita started offering Super Sublingual B-12, I ordered it and immediately began to feel like another person. Since then, my mood has been more stable, I sleep better and I’m feeling more energy! I am exercising more and even losing weight because now I have the energy and stamina to exercise for a longer period of time. My clarity of mind is also back! Based upon my results, I’ve become passionate about this tremendous Super Sublingual B-12 product. I know many women like me and I want to reach out to them and let them know about it. Even people who know me ask, ‘Oh, did you take your B-12 today?’ because they can tell the difference. When I was not taking it, I was crabby, cranky and miserable. I was at my worst and the Super B-12 turned all of that around. It keeps me from being irritable and helps me be more calm and happier. • 14. Going gluten- free may help with allergies By Christa Orecchio, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Holistic Health Counselor G luten, as you may know, is the protein in wheat, rye and barley that causes intestinal problems for people who are allergic to it. Since it’s found in most of the grain-based products we eat like bread and pasta, it can be tricky to avoid. Studies from the Celiac Disease Foundation indicate that 1 in 167 children and 1 in 111 adults have gluten allergies, yet most take years to figure it out. Knowing the symptoms of a gluten allergy can speed up your diagnosis process so you can start feeling better fast. Any of the following concerns are good reasons to test for gluten sensitivity/intolerance: • Chronic fatique syndrome • Mouth ulcers • Unexplained weight loss • Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms • Anemia • Crohn’s Disease • Diverticulitus • Attention Deficit Disorder • Depression • Skin problems • Autism • Irritability The fastest way to diagnose a gluten allergy (or any other food allergy) is to get a Food Sensitivity Test done to see exactly which foods you are allergic to and how allergic you are. These blood serum tests cost between $125-$250. Happily, there are increasingly more gluten-free options available in health food stores, and these products will soon make their way onto the shelves of conventional grocery stores. In an economy where grocery store sales are reported down in all categories, sales of gluten-free foods are up, and steadily climbing. Gluten-free eating requires education and a bit of vigilance at first. It is important to know that oats, rye and barley contain gluten. The food manufacturers can have many names for gluten, including but not limited to hydrolyzed plant or vegetable protein, MSG, malt, malt flavoring, durum and semolina. However, there are many delicious whole foods alternatives to choose from. With a little knowledge of what you can eat and where to find gluten-free products and recipes, you will soon adapt to this new lifestyle and will be feeling better than you thought possible. For those who love to bake, gluten-free baking is a bit of an art form, but can be done. Gluten is that magic element that adds structure and stability to desserts and breads, making them chewy. Rest assured you don’t need to sacrifice that delightful consistency. Here is a great gluten-free flour recipe: Alison’s Gluten-Free Baking Mix 4 cups brown rice flour 4 cups tapioca flour 2 cups potato starch (not potato flour) 2 cups arrowroot powder Combine all ingredients. When converting your own recipes, use a blend of half gluten-free baking mix and half whole-grain gluten-free flour, except for pastry recipes, such as pie crust, when the mix should be used as is. Quinoa Almond Blueberry Muffins Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add to bowl: 6 eggs 1/4 cup coconut oil, liquified 1/2 tsp. vanilla 2 tsp. alcohol-free almond extract 2 Tbs. honey or agave Beat with electric mixer, then add: 6 Tbs. almond butter 1/2 tsp. sea salt 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 4 Tbs. coconut flour, sifted 1 cup quinoa flakes 2 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. baking soda Beat again. Stir in 1 cup chopped or slivered nuts and blueberries. Fill unbleached paper muffin cups about 3/4 full. • 15. 1-800-991-7116 May 2009 l 15 the calcium debate – and what it means to you Calcium is an essential nutrient for all animal and plant life. It begins life as a mineral called calcium carbonate – a rock. Plants extract calcium salts (calcium chloride) and use them in creating energy. As the food chain continues, herbivores (plant-eating animals) consume the plants and concentrate the calcium into both liquid and solid states. Solid calcium helps create hard, compact tissues like teeth and bones. Liquid calcium resides inside your cells, nerves and all of your muscles – including your heart! Every time a muscle contracts it uses calcium. There is also calcium in your bloodstream. The debate about calcium begins with the source: Is calcium from stone (carbonate), oyster shell or eggshell as good as calcium from fruits and vegetables? Is calcium from milk and beef equivalent to calcium from nuts and fish? There is no simple answer; however, certain forms of calcium are good for certain applications. Calcium from bone meal and MCHC (found in abundance in VitaCal-Mag D) helps strengthen teeth and bones. Studies have shown that MCHC may improve and increase bone density as much as 6% in a single year! Let me repeat this: In clinical trials where bone density is measured, the greatest benefits to our teeth and bones came from MCHC. There’s another reason for the high quality of VitaCal-Mag D; it contains five different forms of chelated calcium for maximum absorption. Reversing osteoporosis MCHC is the specific collagen in your bones. You’ll find it in both VitaCal-Mag D and TriVita’s Bone Builder. It makes sense to supplement your bones with this special collagen. Even more remarkable is the fact that people who take enough MCHC build new, healthy bone cells even into their senior years. Homocysteine (HCY) breaks up collagen and reducing HCY is critical to preventing osteo- porosis. TriVita’s Bone Builder is the perfect partner to HCY Guard® because it includes nutrients that help reduce homocysteine. Reducing the effect of stress is important in conserving your bones. When you are under stress your body’s response is to steal minerals from your bones to fuel the “fight or flight” response. TriVita’s Bone Builder contains the amino acid GABA, which helps reduce this effect of cortisol and allows minerals to go back into your bones when you sleep. Speaking of sleep, your body produces a hormone called NAMOT (related to melatonin) when you are in a deep sleep. This hormone signals your bones to begin repairing themselves. Metho- xytryptamine (5MT) is the protein that your pituitary gland uses to produce NAMOT, and we include this vital protein in TriVita’s Bone Builder. Growing new bone The best way to manage osteoporosis is to prevent it. Children and adults up to age 30 should take a calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D supplement every day. I also encourage people to focus their diet on leafy, green vegetables, get at least 20 minutes of direct sunshine on 40% of their body every day and perform weight-bearing exercises most days of the week. Regardless of your age or bone density you can slow bone loss, delay the disease process of osteoporosis and start producing new, healthy bone cells. TriVita’s VitaCal-Mag D is ideal for people under 30 years old and those with the lowest risk factors. TriVita’s Bone Builder is designed for people over 30 who have risk factors for osteoporosis. The good news is that you can add back up to 6% of new, healthy bone mass every year if you follow these steps – no matter how old you are or how thin your bones are. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be just as harmful to your eyes as it can be to your skin. In fact, it can actually burn your corneas. Over time, the cumulative damage caused by UV rays can result in cataracts, macular degeneration and even blindness. As you head outside, take steps to help prevent UV damage and keep your eyes healthy. • Select sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UV rays. • For added protection, wear a hat that covers your eyes. • Wear sunglasses even on overcast days and in the winter. • Don’t judge sunglasses by their color or cost; wear sunglasses that block UV rays. • Protect your children and grandchildren from harmful UV rays. Supply them with sunglasses and hats, too. computer eye strain If you work at a computer all day, or even spend a few hours a day in front of one, you know that it can make your eyes hurt. Blurriness, dryness and even less acute vision can result. These tips and exercises from the National Institutes of Health Division of Occupational Health and Safety can give your eyes a much-needed break: Monitors and eye glare • Position monitors away from direct lighting which creates excessive glare or use a glare filter over the monitor • The top of the viewing screen should be at eye level when the user is sitting in an upright position (Bifocal wearers may need to lower the monitor a couple of inches) • Close drapes/blinds to reduce glare Eye exercises and stretches • Blinking and yawning (produces tears to help moisten and lubricate the eyes) • Expose eyes to natural light Eye movements 1. • 21. 1-800-991-7116 May 2009 l 21 M any women gain weight around the middle in their mid-40s, early 50s and beyond. This accumulation of fat in the abdominal area has been dubbed the “menopot.” The exact cause of this weight gain has been blamed on a number of things including genetics, fluctuating hormones and reduced physical activity. The good news? With healthy lifestyle changes, you can help control – and reduce – the dreaded menopot. This is good news not just from a vanity standpoint but from a health standpoint as well: abdominal fat – especially what’s called visceral fat – can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes and even certain cancers. Visceral fat surrounds your organs, can be very dangerous and is the result of a sedentary lifestyle. The menopot is generally composed of subcutaneous fat, the fat that lies between your skin and your abdominal wall. Although less dangerous than visceral fat, it can still be distressing. The bottom line is that any type of fat is unhealthy. Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can not only help reduce the risks to your health, but they can also help “whittle your middle” – and help you minimize the menopot. Burn away the menopot Reduced physical activity can contribute to increased weight in the menopause years. Plus, as people age, they lose lean muscle tissue, which burns calories. By maintaining or even increasing your activity level, you can help keep the menopot at bay. The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggests that adults get at least 2.5 hours a week of moderate-intensity physical activity or 1.25 hours of vigorous physical activity per week. If you’ve already noticed you’re getting a menopot, you may want to increase that amount to 5 hours a week of moderate- intensity activity or 150 minutes of vigorous activity... or more! Be sure to include both aerobic and strength (resistance) training. The key to consistent activity is doing some- thing you enjoy. Make exercise fun with some of these calorie-burning activities: • Swimming • Bicycling • Dancing • Gardening • Walking • Tennis The menopot menu Your metabolism naturally slows down with age. This means fewer calories are needed to sustain your current weight. However, many people may continue to eat the same amount of food. So, it comes down to the old adage: To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume. But that doesn’t mean you have to go hungry! A study at Pennsylvania State University showed that eating foods that fill you up with water and fiber can help you lose weight. Participants in the study who ate more low-energy-dense, water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, lost more weight than participants who went on diets that reduced portion size and fat intake. Follow these basic diet principles from the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (issued by the USDA and Health and Human Services) to get on the right track: • Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products • Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts • Eat foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars Need some food ideas? Try adding these tasty and healthy foods to your diet: • Chicken breast • Fish fillets • Lean beef • Lean turkey • Lean pork • Salmon • Asparagus • Bell pepper • Broccoli • Cabbage • Cauliflower • Carrots • Celery • Green beans • Spinach • Squash • Beans • Bran/fiber cereal • Brown rice • Oatmeal • Pita bread • Wheat germ • Apples • Bananas • Blackberries • Blueberries • Cherries • Cranberries • Grapefruit • Grapes • Kiwi • Nectarines • Oranges • Raspberries • Tomatoes • Zucchini By increasing your exercise and sticking to a well-balanced diet that is high in fiber, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables, you can help minimize the menopot. For extra help, try Leanology® – the Smart Weight Loss System.  Minimize the “Menopot” Menopause weight gain is not inevitable
  • 22. All love begins with having a sense of value and appreciation of one’s self. Each of us, male and female, must have a feeling that we matter and have significance. This feeling develops out of our earliest life experiences and shapes our core self-value as an adult. Healthy self-love Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, suggested 2,000 years ago that before you can give and receive love you must first be a lover of yourself. Aristotle considered a healthy self- love the foundation on which all relationships are built. In an article by therapist Sarah Leah Blum, she states, “Loving yourself is the greatest love of all and we all need to love ourselves to have a full, healthy, balanced life.” Love addiction and toxic relationships However, many people do not have a healthy start in life and their needs went unmet by their primary caregivers. Either from childhood neglect or abuse, they have an “empty hole” in their heart. Quite often, such people look for the feeling of love in all the wrong places. They become addicted to the feeling of love to fill the empty hole. When we think of addiction we think of alcohol, drugs, gambling and food, but love is a powerful feeling and is a primary emotion that can be as addictive as cocaine. While men aren’t immune, it’s more often women who are in unhealthy relationships, recognize that it is bad for them, but are unable to break it off. Here are some questions to consider if you wonder about your relationships: • Do your family and friends tell you they are concerned for you? • Do you make up your mind to leave and go right back again when you feel lonely? • Does the relationship make you miserable but has an unnatural hold on you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a love addiction. If you think that you may be in a toxic relationship there is always hope. Admitting the truth is the first step, followed by seeking out expert support to regain emotional health. Romantic love Healthy romantic love is a wonderful experience, which can encourage bonding and intimacy. A woman’s need for love can be fulfilled by being held and caressed and told how much she is loved and appreciated. It is essential for a man to put his feelings of love for her into words. This can be difficult for many men. On average, according to some experts, a man speaks only 2,000 words a day compared to 7,000 words spoken by a woman. A woman likes to talk and especially about her feelings. She wants to know she’s pleasing her man and that he loves being with her. Men who find it difficult to say the words might try these techniques to start “talking” and sharing more with their partners. Start writing love letters. Once or twice a month, share your feelings with your spouse. Find pretty blank cards and write your messages of love. Saying “I love you” is the most beautiful gift you can give. These words are the most treasured anyone can hear.  Our Need to Feel Lovedby Dr. Judy Judy Ellison, Ph.D., is a success coach, author, motivational speaker and psychologist. • 23. “...A wife of noble character... is worth far more than rubies.” – Proverbs 31:10 Since May marks Mother’s Day throughout North America, I thought it fitting to make women the topic of this month’s feature. It’s also fitting that a woman, Pastor Judith Crist of City of Grace Church in Arizona, shares her insights on spirituality and women today in this exclusive VitaJournal interview. Judith Crist has served alongside her husband, Dr. Terry Crist, as one of the Executive Pastors of City of Grace since it was founded. Her passion is to see people discover and live the abundant life found in Jesus Christ. Judith attended Ayers Music Conservatory in Dallas, TX and also majored in music ministry and Biblical studies at Jackson College of Ministries in Jackson, MS. chaplain Gene: What does “virtue” mean to you? Pastor Judith: To me, virtue is the inside source and force of goodness that we can cultivate for the purpose of influence. My perspective is from both the Old and New Testaments and the real world we live in. chaplain Gene: In Proverbs 31, we read of a “virtuous woman” whose noble character has her working from dawn ‘til dusk, planting fields, weaving cloth and tending to the needs of her family. How does this translate to women in the 21st century? Pastor Judith: Proverbs 31 can leave a negative and positive impression. The negative is that some may look at these tasks as a “to do” list; a woman might think that it sets an impossible standard, so why try? your body, his temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20 Virtue and today’s woman: Tapping into “the inside source and force of goodness” by Chaplain Gene Henderson The positive impression is the advice the woman is giving to her son: she’s counseling him on the kind of woman he should seek out. She is actually taking the limits off who a woman can be, not saying every woman has to be it all. The woman described has found her wisdom and confidence and has developed her resources: she’s gained the respect of her family, her peers and interacts with those in government and business. She is cultivating her skills to influence her world... really, to fulfill her purpose. chaplain Gene: So you don’t see Proverbs 31 as restricting women? Pastor Judith: No, on the contrary, it releases them. We don’t have to be men to make a difference, to be leaders. We can be uniquely who God designed us to be. When we have confidence and the humility to take Godly coaching, women can be an unstoppable force. Remember, the Proverbs 31 woman didn’t just sit back and wait for things to happen. She really embodied what you might call “proactive engagement” in her world. chaplain Gene: You mentioned virtue in the New Testament; please explain. Pastor Judith: Virtue also stands out in the New Testament, Luke 8:40-48, when an ailing woman in a crowd reaches out to touch Jesus’ garment. Jesus says that he felt the virtue flowing out of him to her and she was healed. If we partner with God, we will have the source and force of goodness that brings the transformation that God wants. This power for transformation is not about rebellion, or hard-hearted arrogance. It’s the confidence in the God that created us, the faith that He will use us, and that He will bring His solutions through us. chaplain Gene: Women today have experience filling many roles: businessperson, co-worker, partner, parent, caregiver for aging parents, friend, well, the list goes on. Is it possible to really focus on your life purpose when you wear so many hats? Pastor Judith: Absolutely. We may think our lives are busier than in Biblical days, but the guiding principles for virtue and purpose really remain unchanged. I have two guideposts for purpose in life: The first is God’s Word; since He created us He is the only one who has the right to define us. The second is our gifts, our talents, the things that give us passion. Mother Teresa used her passion, her goodness to serve, and was heard. That’s not just about the life of women; that’s the Christian way. 1-800-991-7116 “If we partner with God, we will have the source and force of goodness that brings the transformation that God wants.” – Pastor Judith Crist May 2009 l 23
  • 24. “I have had two scans in the last two years and it’s amazing – my bones are fine.” “Five years ago I was diagnosed with osteopenia, or thinning of the bones, in my lumbar area. I also had a lot of pain associated with the osteopenia. When I walked it was really painful and I walked like I was 80 years old! I tried various medications but they didn’t work. So I tried Bone Builder when it came out. I have had two scans in the last two years and it’s amazing – my bones are fine. Plus, now I can walk without the pain! I had a friend try the Bone Builder, and she loves it, too.” Bobbie S. – Jamestown, NC “I haven’t had night sweats since I began the Balanced Woman.” “The prescription that my doctor gave me for my night sweats just wasn’t working. Plus, I was very apprehensive about taking the hormones, since I had heard so many negatives about them. I was having a terrible time sleeping and getting migraines quite often. I began taking TriVita’s Balanced Woman and I’m so very impressed! I’m feeling a lot better. Not only am I sleeping better, but I’m actually dreaming more, which means I’m going into R.E.M. sleep and getting a more rejuvenating sleep. I get migraines less often and when they do come, not as severe. I haven’t had night sweats since I began the Balanced Woman. Now, my doctor wants to place an order for it, too! Thanks, TriVita!” Diane Y. – Castle Rock, CO “In about 5 weeks I’ve lost 21 pounds.” “My daughter convinced me to try Leanology. In the last 10 years I had gone up 4 sizes. I live in an apartment that has a lot of stairs, and lately going up them has been really hard on my knees. I also have neuropathy with my diabetes. In about 5 weeks I’ve lost 21 pounds. I usually drink two Leanology shakes a day. I make mine with fat free milk and often add a sliced banana or a handful of frozen blueberries or mixed berries. I take the capsules in the morning and in the afternoon. They help me not to be hungry. I don’t nibble anymore. After I lost some of the weight, I had the energy to join a water aerobics class. But the best part is that my doctor says that I might be able to go off my insulin by the first of the year. I can’t wait to give you my next update!”* Sharon K. – Castle Rock, CO “It really helps with the stress I have.” “I started taking Adaptogen 10 Plus during the trial period. It really helps with the stress I have from taking care of my 3-year-old and 4-year-old grandkids. The Adaptogen 10 Plus also gives me the energy I need to keep up with their demands. With the Adaptogen I can stay up until 10:30 or 11 o’clock at night, and I noticed that I get a lot more done late at night, after the kids are in bed. I also sleep better! My mind is clearer and I’m not so forgetful.” Dale L. – Peachtree City, GA *Youshouldconsultwithahealthcareproviderbeforestarting anydiet, exerciseorsupplementationprogram, beforetaking anymedication, orifyoususpectyoumighthaveaheart problem.Youshouldnotstoptakinganymedicationwithout firstconsultingyourhealthcareprovider. Real Stories from real people See what Members like you have to say about TriVita® products! “... since taking the Sublingual B-12 our son has become calmer...” “Our son would get these wheezing attacks from his condition the doctors call ‘croup variant asthma’ in which we would have to take him to the emergency room. The worse attacks would come upon him from November through April. Our son was taking multiple prescriptions, and so we ordered the Sublingual B-12 as well as other vitamins from TriVita to help restore his immune system and keep him calmer and focused. We were so happy our son likes the flavor of the Sublingual B-12, because we want him to take it every day. We never have a fight with him taking the Sublingual B-12 like we did with the medicines. The great news is since taking the Sublingual B-12 our son has become calmer and hasn’t gotten as anxious or as agitated, which has kept him from having any more of these attacks. His last wheezing attack was December 2007. Thank you, Lord, for letting us find out about TriVita’s fantastic products.” Anna S. – St. Petersburg, FL trivita.com24 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness “... my bone density actually improved 4%! I was thrilled!” “I’m 65 years old. Several years ago I had a bone scan and was diagnosed with osteopenia. My doctor put me on a prescription medicine. I tried it for awhile but stopped taking it.* My doctor suggested I take 1,500 mg of calcium a day instead. I was very interested in Bone Builder when it became available and started taking it. Just a couple of weeks ago I had another bone scan. The technician said that they sometimes see improvement of 1% or so, but my bone density actually improved 4%! I was thrilled! I really believe that improvement is attributed to Bone Builder because I’ve taken the extra calcium for awhile but only recently saw these improvements. The technician asked for information about Bone Builder because they said it normally takes 1 to 1 1/2 years for bones to rebuild, and see that 1% improvement, so I was just thrilled with the results. It says a lot for your product!” Karen D. – Baton Rouge, LA

But few of us have to endure the level of daily stress that the men and women in the military go through every day – especially those who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And how about the stateside families who try to live normal lives while their loved ones are in danger? One such person is Josh, who just completed his second tour of duty in Iraq. A six-year veteran, he enlisted after college to fight terrorism. The 9/11 events had a huge impact on him and he felt it was his generation’s duty to come to the aid of their country. “I’m proud of my service in the U.S. Army, Special Operations and feel honored to serve this great nation,” Josh says. He and his wife, Kate, are looking forward to the birth of their baby in July. What Josh does to stay healthy Like so many of us, Josh tries to eat the right foods and take nutritional supplements. This becomes extremely difficult in Iraq where soldiers don’t always have access to nutritious foods and fresh fruits and vegetables – especially when they are far away from their “home base.” Luckily, Kate and her mom regularly send Josh “CARE” packages packed with TriVita products. Dr. Libby’s Vital C Crystals and Tablets help maintain his immunity during his constantly stressful situation. These products also play a key role in flushing impurities from Josh’s system. He adds Optima4® to his shake every morning to give himself a much-needed boost of energy and more mental clarity for 15- hour days. “Of course,” says Josh, “This is very important when I’m on life and death missions.” Digestive Complex™ with its eight food-grade enzymes helps ensure complete digestion. Other members of Josh’s platoon have become curious about his continued good health and he has generously shared TriVita products with them. Good health begins at home Kate also makes sure she maintains her good health while Josh is overseas. “I use Sublingual B-12 consistently because it is good for me and helps with mental clarity,” she says. “I also take Vital C and that’s a big reason I haven’t been sick for over a year. Both Josh and I are very active and we also keep at least two jars of Quick-Relief™ Gel on hand. This product helps tremendously with muscle aches and pains.” The psychological strain of Josh’s long absences can be hard for the entire family. Says Kate, “The important thing is to stay busy. I plan several activities with friends weekly, because it’s important to have something to look forward to. I’ve been so fortunate because friends and family have visited while Josh has been away, and it’s always nice to have the company for a few days at a time.” triVita is “all in the family” Kate’s mom, Sue, is an Affiliate Member who has risen to the Director level. All of her siblings are Affiliate Members; her oldest brother just graduated from medical school and her youngest brother is in osteopathic medical school. They both use TriVita supplements, especially Sublingual B-12 and Vital C. Kate’s sister, Christian was featured in the Affiliate Member version of the March 2009 VitaJournal. Her dad takes several TriVita supplements; her grandmother is a healthy 86 thanks to her daily regimen of Vital C, Sublingual B-12 and VitaCal-Mag D™ . “Our entire family loves TriVita food supplements,” Kate concludes. “We’re very grateful that they’ve helped keep Josh and his entire family healthy during his tour of duty in Iraq.” TriVita would like to thank all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. It’s official: Exercise helps improve quality of life Baton Rouge, Louisiana It’s commonly believed that exercise improves quality of life but few studies have set out to prove it... until now. Researchers in Baton Rouge discovered that as little as an hour of exercise per week can help improve quality of life. The six-month trial, which appeared in the February 2009 Archives of Internal Medicine, involved 430 physically inactive, postmenopausal women with high blood pressure. The women were divided into a non-exercising group, and three exercising groups that walked and rode stationary bikes. The first group exercised about an hour a week, the second for two hours per week and the final group exercised about three hours per week. Women in the exercise groups reported better perceived health, increased energy and a better sense of well-being. The women in the three-hour per week exercise group reported the greatest improvements. Researchers found that even if the women lost no weight as a result of the exercise, they still experienced improvements in quality of life. Diet soda linked to diabetes and metabolic syndrome Houston, Texas Drinking at least one diet soda a day may increase your risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, said a study published in the January 2009 Diabetes Care. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors which together increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Study results showed that those who drank diet soda daily had a 67% greater risk of diabetes and a 36% greater risk of two components of metabolic syndrome – high fasting glucose and high waist circumference. Researchers concluded, “Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with other dietary and lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control and eventual diabetes.” Unhealthy lifestyle habits can double your risk of stroke Norfolk, United Kingdom Poor lifestyle choices can double your risk of stroke, according to researchers in the February 2009 British Medical Journal. Smoking, excessive drinking, physical inactivity and low blood Vitamin C levels – indicating low intake of fruits and vegetables – were evaluated. Over 20,000 men and women aged 40–79, part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer Study (EPIC), completed health and lifestyle questionnaires between 1993 and 1997. They had no history of stroke or heart attack at the beginning of the study, and were followed an average of 11 years. Participants were given a point for each of the following lifestyle habits: not smoking, drinking only 1 to 14 units of alcohol per week, exercising regularly and blood Vitamin C levels that indicated a daily intake of five servings of fruits and vegetables. Those who scored zero points had a 2.3 greater risk of stroke than those who scored four. The more points partici- pants had, the more their risk of stroke decreased. Significantly more women than men scored a total of four points. The Research Desk New findings in health and wellness trivita.com28 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness
  • 29. flOSSInG can REDucE GuM DISEaSE- cauSInG bacTERIa New York, New York Adding floss to your tooth-brushing regimen can help reduce bacteria that cause gum disease, according to a recent study in the Journal of Periodontology. Researchers from New York University College of Dentistry studied 51 pairs of twins aged 12–21 for the study. For a two- week period, one twin brushed teeth and tongue and the other twin brushed teeth and tongue and flossed. After two weeks, it was discovered that the twins who had not flossed had significantly more gum disease-causing bacteria than the twins who had brushed and flossed. Additionally, those in the flossing group experienced a 38% reduction in gum bleeding. Researchers concluded that “tooth and tongue brushing plus flossing significantly decreased the abundance of microbial species associated with periodontal disease and dental caries [cavities] after a 2-week program.” The research was part of a five-year study funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. calORIE RESTRIcTIOn IMPROVES MEMORy Münster, Germany Cutting calories may improve memory, it was reported in the January 2009 The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The three-month study involved 50 normal to overweight adults ranging in age from 50 to 72. Participants were divided into three groups: one group had their calories reduced by 30%, another had a 20% increase in unsaturated fatty acids without changing their total caloric intake, and the third group did not change their diet. A memory test was administered both before and after the study. Those in the calorie restriction group showed an average 20% improvement in their verbal memory scores. Researchers suggest these improvements may be attributable to improved insulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation, both of which play a part in improved cognition. Article from Michael Ellison continued from page 2... you for attending this 90-minute event, we are giving away a free 32 oz bottle of Nopalea, as well as a DVD about the healing plants in the Sonoran Desert. Some people are a little unsure if they have the ability to participate as an Affiliate Member. Well, it is as simple as sharing a DVD with someone. The whole premise is not about being a salesperson, but about getting involved in helping people discover they can have greater wellness by doing some pretty basic things and taking a product like Nopalea. It could be as simple as just inviting a few friends over for a Nopalea tasting party and watching the DVD in your home. I have been on this mission for 10 years. I want people to experience greater wellness. I want to raise up a grassroots movement of people who are excited about sharing wellness with others. Again I say this: North Americans’ deteriorating health is not just about the effects of aging. We are experiencing the results of unhealthy lifestyles that seriously affect our health. For the first time in American history, children from ages 1-10 are not expected to live as long as their parents because of the disease issues they face. Nor are they expected to have the same quality of life over those years. I find that deplorable – yet it is reversible if we can create enough voices in the marketplace. Will you join us? Mark Twain said it best: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore – dream and discover!” There is a greater degree of wellness possible for all of us – especially for our children and grandchildren. We must pursue wellness! 1-800-991-7116 May 2009 l 29 I want to raise up a grassroots movement of people who are excited about sharing wellness with others.
