Ester Ytterbrink's talk on "FOSS for Crips" - free software for accessibility at the track "Universal Design — Aiming for Accessibility" on FSCONS 2011. With a license to live — FOSS for crips by Ester Ytterbrink We all know the benefits and limitations of FOSS. How can we apply these to software accessibility tools? Why should there be more FOSS software for people with disabilities? Why are not all accessibility tools FOSS? What can crips give back to the FOSS community? My master thesis "FOSS för funkisar" was an investigation and exploration of the perceptions of FOSS software among people who work with and/or use accessibility tools. I will use this as a foundation as I reason around these questions. My wish is to challenge the relation between the producer, consumer and financier of accessibility tools. I want to show how FOSS can be used to change the way some of the people who are most dependent of their computers think of open source and free software.

Running Linux on an embedded node in the automotive environment adds a number of new challenges that have to be addressed. One of the problems we have been working on is start-up times. We have trimmed the start-up time of the Linux kernel in less than 0.2 seconds on low end hardware. This presentation will look into and discuss some of the trade-offs we did to get the system starting up quicker on a limited hardware. In an automotive environment many systems have to have there communication up within factions of a second, as the car get more complex more CPU power is needed in many different places. Traditional automotive solutions have been using two CPU’s on each node one small quick starting to handle the communication and one for the applications. If only one CPU can get the main applications starting quick enough that can make the hardware both simpler and cheaper. About Mecel Mecel is a systems and software development company with more than 25 years of experience in developing solutions for the automotive industry. We specialize in in-car communication technologies, user interface development and consumer device interaction.

Imagine a textbook where a pupil and her teacher can choose topic depth, clarity of text or homework difficulty as needed and necessary. Where teachers can choose alternatives supporting different instruction methods and teaching styles, and schools can allow different chapter content based on time constraints or policy. Books where parents can get a topic summary to read before helping with homework. And then imagine finding all this in the same book. This talk introduces the Kaizendo project, where the goal is to make books like this possible.

Even though the Internet and many of its early services come from a peer-to- peer based design, many of today's popular Internet services are built in a centralized fashion. Emerging technologies such as Cloud Computing make it easier to scale web-based applications up to millions of users. So not only new services, but also traditional applications are moving into the "cloud" and their software can only be used "as a service". This talk will illustrate the trend towards centralised services and explain the reasons for this trend. More importantly, it will show how power is accumulated by service providers and what problems arise from this for users. It will conclude with some solutions and strategies that can help users to remain in control of their computing and their data.

This new version of the popular embedded device comes with a new iteration of Broadcom’s VideoCore GPU platform, and was released with a fully open source driver stack, developed by Igalia.
