Welcome to FPL Introduce library staff As many of you know, we subscribed to a downloadable book service in late Fall. The service is called OverDrive and allows library patrons who live/work/school in Fullerton to access the book database through our library website and download ebooks and audiobooks for free to their PCs or mobile devices.
OverDrive is a service that allows you to search our collection of downloadable books, check them out and download. Like the actual books in the library, you only need your library card and the service is free. This service is available to Fullerton Library patrons who live, work or go to school in Fullerton. A variety of devices are compatible, and OverDrive works with both Windows and Mac computers.
We offer two formats eBooks and Audiobooks. Personally I am a big fan of audiobooks as I can download them to my phone and listen to them in my car. No more switching CDs!
You will need 3 things to get started with OverDrive: A computer or a mobile device Your FPL library card. Software provided by OverDrive so that you can read or listen to the book.
So, the first step is to download the OverDrive Media Console. This is the program needed to access audiobooks. As I mentioned before, OverDrive can be used either on a computer or with a mobile device. For audiobooks, you can download both MP3 and WMA books to a Windows computer. A Mac will allow only MP3. (WMA stands for Windows Media Audio – we do attempt to buy MP3 as much as possible, but some titles are only available as WMA) (Download console from website)
If you plan on listening to audiobooks through a mobile device. The OverDrive Media Console for mobile devices is often called an “app” and can be found in the marketplace or App store. Once you have the console on the mobile device you can use it to listen to MP3 and read eBooks.
To read ePub and PDF ebooks you need an Adobe Digital Editions account. A link to this is also found on the website. (download digital editions) If you don’t have an account, register for one. It is very simple. Digital editions is necessary for all ebook readers except Kindle.
For mobile devices you have to first get the app. Install the mobile app – found at your app store or marketplace – Remember to search for “OverDrive” Authorize with Adobe Digital Editions. - this is easy and only has to be done once. Visit FPL’s virtual branch by opening the OverDrive App and finding our library. It may help to favorite or bookmark us once you find us so you don’t have to do this each time. Once you have added a library, simple click on the library to be brought to the site. Only books available for your device will appear. Remember the steps explained above only have to be done once.
Once you begin browsing, if you find your item is checked out, you can place a reservation. The purchase of items for OverDrive is exactly the same as regular books. We only have the amount of copies purchased available, so if it is checked out and there isn’t another copy, you will have to make a reservation. When your book is available, you will receive an email alerting you to its availability.
(Show digital rights bar indicating what can be done with this book)
OverDrive has an extensive Help section (show website)
What do you think?
Talk about MP3s and we will get more
Often your device will indicate which type of audiobook to choose. WMA is recommended for Overdrive Console on PCs due to smaller size of file.
Another review of Adobe Activation, if you are not sure about it. Note: I did discover when I was playing with the Sony Reader than it is better to use their software instead of Adobe Editions.
This prompt will show up the first time you open the console on your Windows PC. Simply follow the prompts.
When you get home, try this. (read slide) To summarize, today you have learned about What is OverDrive Where you can find our collection How you can get started How to download titles to a mobile device How to place a hold or reservation Where to find Help. And, how to complete Adobe Activation and upgrade the Windows Media Player Security (the Media Player Security allows you to download DRM (digital rights management) items) To end this class, we have set up stations with staff around the room that are device specific. You will find a station for the iPad, Nook, Kindle and Sony Reader. If you have additional questions, staff there may be able to help. If you have your device with you and need a quick tip, feel free to ask. What about mobile devices????? Are there any questions?
