2. Tips for Caring forYour Tie
If you properly care
for your tie you will
prevent damage to the
fabric and have years
of wear.A poorly
treated tie has a short
life and you will need
to replace it much
sooner than if you take
the following steps.
3. Take It Easy
One of the most
common mistakes in
caring for a tie is to take
off by yanking at the tie
to remove it and untie
the knot.When you do
this you could pull the
fabric and damage the
tie. Carefully loosen the
tie and take it off and
then untie the knot.The
best way to untie is to
reverse the steps used
to tie the knot.
4. Keep It Untied
Always untie your tie
when you take it off.
you can cause
permanent wrinkles to
the fabric and undue
wear if you leave it
tied for long periods.
Also, allow a few days
before you wear the
same tie again, this
allows the tie to
return naturally to its
wrinkle-free state.
5. Store It Rolled
Always store your ties
by loosely rolling them.
To roll a tie, begin by
holding the narrow
end against your palm,
and then winding up
the rest of the tie, with
the wide end on the
outside. Lay the roll on
a flat surface on the
coiled side.This is also
the best way to pack
your ties when you
travel.
6. Keep It Clean
Don’t ever machine wash a
tie it will stretch the fabric
and leave the tie unkempt. Silk
ties are fragile even dry
cleaning can cause them to
lose their luster.
If you stain the tie
immediately take it to the dry
cleaners and let them know
what the stain is.They should
be able to tell you if they can
remove the stain by hand
cleaning it or if you should
just replace the tie.
Much like suede boots water
spots will stain your tie and
cologne can cause the color
to fade.
7. Trim Loose Threads
If you see a loose
thread on your tie,
resist the urge to pull
it off.You could cause
an unfortunate
unraveling that will
render the tie useless.
Use scissors or nail
clippers to trim the
thread as close to the
tie as you can.
8. Wrinkle-Free
You can lightly iron the tie
(without steam) at low
temperatures to smooth out
stubborn wrinkles. Hot
ironing is not good for ties as
it weakens the fabric.Also,
make sure you change the
iron’s fabric setting to match
that of the tie before you
begin ironing.You can also
steam out the wrinkles by
hanging the tie in the
bathroom during a hot
shower, don’t allow water to
spray the tie though.To dry
the tie, roll it up in a clean
towel for a day.You will have a
wrinkle free tie the next day.
9. Finally...
A little care and
patience is all it takes
to have tie that lasts
years and looks great.
