3. What is Utilitarianism?
-It is an ethical philosophy in which the
happiness of the greatest number of people in
the society is considered that greatest good.
- According to the philosophy an action is
considered right if it leads to happiness
(absence of pain) and is wrong if it leads to
unhappiness (pain).
4. What is Retributive Punishment?
- This theory indicates that people should receive what
they deserve.
- This means people who work hard deserve to be
recognized
- Those who break the rules deserved to be punished.
- If you behave well you deserve good treatment from
others and vice versa.
- The punishment for a crime is acceptable as long as it is
a proportionate response for the crime committed.
- Believe in eye for an eye.
5. What type of Punishment is
Capital Punishment?
Utilitarian or Retributive?
-If someone thinks it will benefit a majority of people by
murdering someone then it is utilitarian.
-If someone thinks killing someone is getting what they
deserve then they believe in retributive punishment.
- It can be both but it is based on your own opinion.
6. Background Information on Capital
Punishment in Illinois
-Illinois became the 16th state in the United States to abolish
the death penalty, March 19, 2011.
-The 15 men that were remaining on death row got
sentenced to life in prison instead.
-Governor Quinn decided to abolish the death penalty incase
of executing an innocent person. There have been 20
people sentenced to death row had their cases over turned
because evidence came back that they were innocent.
7. • The last person that was executed in Illinois was Andrew
Kokoraleis
• He was apart of the group called “The Chicago Rippers”
• These men that we apart of this group were targeted
towards women and there are as many as 18 woman
these men were said to have targeted
• Andrew was one the few other men that were
cannibalistic men torturing women, torturing them, gang
raping them, or even stabbing them.
• These men would carry out a sickening ritual where they
would remove the victims left breast using garroting wire
and would save parts of their bodies to eat.
• There was one women who miraculously survived the
attack and was able to identify Andrew.
9. -He was executed March 17, 1999.
-In his last 24 hours of life he was told to be very cooperative,
polite, and calm.
-He spent his last hours reading the bible, drinking water, and
visiting with his brother.
-He refused to eat his last meal.
-In the last 24 hours before execution you are allowed to bee
visited by several people. Including family, friends, attorneys,
and spiritual advisors.
10. - I do not believe in capital punishment.
- I believe if someone committed such a terrible crime to
be considered to be on death row, I believe they deserve
to sit in jail for the rest of their lives and think about what
they have done.
-I think if they get executed then they are getting let off
easy because now they do not have to deal with their
consequences.
- Another reason I do not believe in it is because it costs
a lot more to execute someone as opposed to housing
them in jail.
- One last reason I do not believe in it is because there is
a possibility that you can execute an innocent person.
11. So… you may ask what do I believe in.
Retribution or Utilitarian?
The answer I have is BOTH.
-I believe in retribution because if someone were to commit a
crime they deserve to receive punishment base on the severity of
the crime they committed. If someone breaks the rules they
deserved to be punished.
-I also believe in utilitarian as was. If someone commits a criminal
act they deserve to be punished as long as it will help benefit
everyone else.
An example would be punishing a murderer. If we were to keep
him on lockdown for a lifetime (or some peoples believe, capital
punishment) it would help protect everyone from being that
persons next victim.
12. What do you believe in?
Retribution or Utilitarianism
