Can you elaborate on
the role of a project
manager in the
building team?
A project manager role is
as the overall leader of
the whole CONSTRUCTION
and ADMINISTRATION,
team in running a project
in hand. He/ She will TAKE
LEAD and attend to
meetings with the clients
or their representative. He
will MONITOR the actual
work schedule VS the
baseline programme to
ensure the project is
running SMOOTHLY. He will
write and response to
CORRESPONDANCE from
the client and attends to
all their needs of the
project.
2
Can you define 4 key
qualities of a good
project manager?
4 Key qualities of a project
manager shall, be a
STRONG and FAIR leader
of the project team, be a
very KNOWLEDGEABLE
and suitable qualified
person in the field of his
expertise. Be able to
CONTROL all the sub-cons
and suppliers of the
project, be able to TAKE
CHARGE of.
WHAT WAS YOUR
GREATEST PROJECT
ACHIEVEMENT?
It depends, I would say
completing a MEGA
project of NATIONAL
INTEREST, such as MRT job,
which is currently the
LARGEST in the country.
By Chin Min Ngee
On the scale of 1-10 how
much do you love your
job? And Why?
7 points and above. Why?
There’s no WHY. If you put
your heart into doing the job
and you’re able to achieve
the expected results, you will
have your job satisfaction.
Further, the joy of completing
the job that one construct
from scratch to handing over
has no limits.

What kinds of problems/challenges/issues that
you encountered during a project?
There are lots of CHALLENGES in running projects.
No 2 projects are similar in nature. Every project is NEW,
construction industry is not like factory production. It's
almost impossible to run line production like in a factory,
where day in - day out one just produce the same
product of a certain SIZE and SHAPE.
In construction, all the ISSUES are DYNAMIC, ever
changing, never passive. Drawings and specifications
and BoQ can differ completely from each other,
COMMERCIAL ISSUES may crop in and one cannot
predict what may happen next.
There are also problems that material price increases that
a contractor is not able to make a claim for. Material
SHORTAGES are quite frequent and we are subjected to
the market forces in terms of pricing and design.
Sub-contractors are also in short supply nowadays, which
especially when there are more and more projects going
around, the sub-cons quantity will still be almost the same
and the skills will be shared and as more jobs, means
more semi-skilled workers be forced to move up to do
some thing that they are not ready, thus may affects the
works quality.
So, in nut-shell, the challenges are always there for a
construction person running the job.
