Notes de l'éditeur
As recent as the late '90s most people regarded Web pages as things to read, not places to post and publish. The origins of modern blogging are often argued about but this is what I found to be pretty widespread information.
In January 1994, Justin Hall launches a website that included links to and reviews of other sites. Then in early 1996, Hall begun to writing an online journal with dated daily entries. He established a wide readership and it quickly became apparent that if Justin Hall could publish his stuff, everyone else could too.
Jorn Barger introduced the term weblog into popular use in December 1997.
In early 1999 Peter Merholz coins the term blog, which is a shortened version of “weblog”. At this stage, a list maintained by Jesse James Garrett recorded that there were 23 known weblogs in existence.
In August 1999, Pyra Labs, which is now owned by Google, launched a free blogging service, that for the first time provides an easy set of tools for anyone to set up a blog. Blogger becomes the most popular web based blogging tool to date, and popularizes blogging with mainstream internet users.
The boom of weblogs happened in 1999 when several companies & developers made easy blogging software and tools. Since 1999, the number of blogs on the Internet has exploded from a few thousand to over 100 million.
It has been found that the majority of bloggers are hobbyists. They say they blog for fun and don’t report any income from their blog.
21% of bloggers are self-employeds. They say they blog full time or occasionally for their own company or organization.
Part-Timers make up 13% of the blogosphere. Blogging is not their full job but they devote a significant amount of time to their blogs. 61% spend more than 3 hours blogging each week.
Corporates are bloggers who blog full-time for a company or organization. They make up only 1% of bloggers.
The fact that using blogs is so easy to use and widely accessible. Just about anyone with a computer can create a blog. No knowledge of html is required. This means that people who are less technology inclined can create one to share their thoughts and the population isn’t just limited to computer techies
Because of this there are millions of blogs, with the number growing each day. I had difficulty finding a number of blogs but most sites agreed that it is currently around 126 million. (as tracked by BlogPulse).
Bloggers use of various social media tools is expanding and the lines between blogs, micro-blogs, and social networks are disappearing. There has also been significant growth of mobile blogging this year.
