3. Programme Components Pillar A. Training on African FOSS Business Models for ICT-based SME Capturing profitable business models for FOSS products, services and training, adapted to the African context Disseminating such model business approaches and related skills in the African ICT sector Pillar B. Quality Management for FOSS Services through Certification Promotion of internationally accepted quality standards in the field of FOSS Enlargement of trainings for certification and accreditation of FOSS training courses, tests and materials Pillar C. Innovative local FOSS Applications for social and economic development “Learning by Coding”: promoting the application of technical skills in locally relevant software projects Development and dissemination of FOSS products adapted to the needs of the SME and the public sector Pillar D. Regional networking and international exchange Community Building through trainings and web portal Strengthening regional organisations and assisting international exchange 3

Training Modules The African FLOSS Business Models Syllabus consists of three parts: Part 1 - African FLOSS Business Models: This part introduces basic FLOSS concepts and provides practical case studies across the African continent. The modules in this part of the syllabus cover FLOSS concepts and principles which are African context specific and are found to be prerequisites for building a sustainable ICT business based on FLOSS. Two modules are covered in this part of the syllabus; Module 1: Introduction to Emerging FLOSS Business Models Module 2: African Business Models: Case Studies 4

Training Modules Part 2 - Knowledge and Skills for FLOSS Entrepreneurs: Businesses, big and small, FLOSS-based or companies doing business around proprietary software yearn to have a generalized knowledge of business and business principles which will help them gain a competitive advantage. Part 2 of the African FLOSS Business Models syllabus introduces innovative and cost effective tools and techniques, components of business management skills, community building and networking, and FLOSS strategies which a vital for starting and sustaining a viable FLOSS business in Africa. Three modules are covered in this part of the syllabus; Module 3: Communicating FLOSS Module 4: Introduction to General Business Skills Module 5: FLOSS Specific Business Knowledge and Skills 5

6. Training Modules Part 3 - FLOSS Training as a Business: As FLOSS is becoming more and more mainstream, many businesses see FLOSS Training as a viable business. This part of the syllabus is aimed at fostering understanding of some of the requirements for becoming a FLOSS trainer, and identifying the opportunities that exist for FLOSS training as a business in African as well as a global look at Linux training worldwide. One module is covered in this part of the syllabus; Module 6: FLOSS Training Module 7: E-Learning Platform 6

After Support Voucher System The voucher system defines the application process and criteria to obtain financial support (subsidies) for the roll-out phase where these trainers act as multipliers and train IT SMEs and other interested persons in the participating countries, also referred to as national trainings. Purpose of the Voucher System The system is to create a conducive environment to assist participants to develop sustainable FOSS based IT businesses and FOSS Communities in the participating countries. 7
