Dear Editor,
I totally disagree with the opinion that science subjects are more important that arts subjects. The law,
teaching, writing, music – all these are arts courses that should have equal prominence. Imagine a world
without the arts – there will be no writers or musicians to entertain us. What a sad and lonely world it would
be. Arts and science subjects are equally important and we should strike a balance.

Question 16 - 25
Read the following information and answer the questions that follow.
THE HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS
INTRODUCTION
The Olympics, an international multi-sporting event, takes place every four years and includes summer and
winter games. The games were originally held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC, in 1896, they were revived by a
French nobleman, thus beginning the era of the modern Olympic games.
ANCIENT OLYMPICS
The Olympics Games was first held to honour gods in Greek Mythology.
Back then, only men and boys could take part, as athletes were not allowed to wear a single strand on their
bodies – they had to compete without clothes.
Upon winning an event, the winner was presented with a crown of olive leaves. The olive branch is a sign
of hope and peace.
MODERN OLYMPICS
Today‟s Olympics Games unites the world. The modern Olympic games allowed women to compete along
with men for the first time.
Medals are given to athletes who are placed first, second, or third in each event. The winners receive gold
medals. The runners-up receive silver medals and the third-placed athletes, bronze medals.

6
OLYMPIC SYMBOLS
The Olympic rings is the best known logo. It represents the unity of five continents and appears in five
colours on the Olympic flag. The official Olympic motto is “citius, altius, forties,” a Latin phrase meaning “swifter,
higher, stronger.”
One custom that has not changed since ancient times to modern days is the lighting of the Olympic flame. It
is the sign of the Olympic spirit of competition, unity and friendship.

The following passage is about a professional hunter of wild animals such as tigers, wolves and leopards
that prey on livestock.

I have spent 20 years hunting wild animals in the Sarawak jungles. The leopard is one
of the most unpredictable animals I have ever come across. A cunning animal, it will
change its direction for no obvious reason. Although I had faced numerous encounters with
ferocious creatures, none scared me the way the leopard did, the day it attacked me.
On January 24, a goat was killed at a nearby farm. Two weeks earlier, farmers had
reported missing livestock. A leopard had been seen around the area at dusk. On that very
day, fifteen experienced men volunteered to track it. Before the hunting party arrived, I
went out to look for the tracks. Without a thought, I left my rifle in the car and that was the
worst mistake of my life. Unarmed, I was exposed to danger.
I stepped into the bushes where the goat was killed. Suddenly, I sensed danger from
behind. I looked around and there, under a tree, all set to strike, was an adult leopard. I
remembered my rifle and turned back to my car to get it.
Then it happened. The leopard leapt onto my back. I heard nothing when it hit me as it
happened very fast. The impact was enough to set me off balance. For a moment I felt
dizzy, as if the surroundings were spinning. I could not make sense of the things around
me. They seemed to be blurring. Before I realised it, I slumped onto the ground with the
leopard clawing at my back. I could faintly hear the grunting from the leopard. Although I
could feel sharp pain all over my back, I still managed to gather enough strength to roll
over. My sudden action took the creature by surprise – I had caused it to let go of me and I
was free for a short time.
That was the best chance I had to run away. However, before I could do anything, the
creature had grabbed my right shoulder. This time, the leopard became more aggressive. It
was certainly not going to let me escape and started shaking me vigorously. The sheer
strength of the mighty animal was incredible. There was simply nothing I could do to stop
it. At that instant, I was sure I was going to die.
Without thinking, I placed my hand on the leopard's neck. I realised that to gain
control over the animal, I had to act swiftly before it could overpower me. This was
something I had learned from my past hunting experience. I never hesitated. I wrestled with
the leopard's head and neck over my chest. Knowing that it was either me or the leopard, I
had to fight for my life. There was no time to waste. With whatever strength that was left in
me, I wrapped my left arm tightly round the leopard's neck, trying to choke it. Furious with
my action, the animal let out a loud and deafening growl. In fighting back, it struggled with
such force that I had to put more pressure on its neck.
A young man, who was a member of the hunting group, was scouting the area.
Suddenly, he heard a loud growl. Sensing someone was in danger, he rushed towards the
scene. He stood hesitatingly about three metres away from the leopard, not knowing
whether he could shoot accurately. Frantically, I yelled at him to move nearer. Bang! The
first shot went off target. Then the second shot hit the leopard in the spine. This time he did
it. There was a loud growl before it went limp. Seeing the lifeless animal next to me, I was
overcome with relief.
Looking back, I think the leopard had every reason to attack me. It was starving.
When I looked straight into its face, I felt sorry. This was the closest encounter I have ever
had with such a fierce animal.

Are You Still Playing Your Flute
Are you still playing your flute?
When there is hardly time for our love
I am feeling guilty
To be longing for your song
The melody concealed in the slim hollow of the bamboo
Uncovered by the breath of an artist
Composed by his fingers
Blown by the wind
To the depth of my heart
Are you still playing the flute?
In the village so quiet and deserted
Amidst the sick rice field
While here it has become a luxury
To spend time watching the rain
Gazing at the evening rays
Collecting dew drops
Or enjoying the fragrance of flowers
Are you still playing the flute?
The more it disturbs my conscience
to be thinking of you
in the hazard of you
my younger brothers unemployed and desperate
my people disunited by politics
my friend slaughtered mercilessly
this world is too old and bleeding

(b) i. Leaving his rifle in the car

ii. Unarmed, he was exposed to danger
28. (a) The impact of the leopard‟s leaping onto his back.
(b) slumped
29. (a) He heard the loud growl (and sensed someone was in danger.)
(b) He was unsure whether he could shoot accurately from the distance of three metres.
30. I think that firstly, he felt sorry that he had to kill the leopard for doing what is part of the basic instinct
of a predator, that is, to attack its prey for food. Secondly, I think he felt sorry for the leopard because he
could see that it had been starved, probably due to the way mankind had destroyed its natural habitat.
31. (Suggested answer)
He realised that he was being attacked by a leopard when he felt it land on his back. The impact threw
him to the ground. Though he was in pain he managed to rolled over. His sudden move surprised the
leopard and it let him go. However, before he could escape, it caught his shoulder and shook him hard.
He grabbed its neck to gain control over the animal. Wrapping his arm tightly round theleopard‟s neck,
he tried to choke it. It fought back aggressively but he also pulled tightly. Then, a member of the hunting
group heard the leopard‟s growl. He rushed to the scene. He hesitated, wondering if his aim would be
accurate from where he was. The hunter shouted to him to move nearer.
32. (a) The poet asked that question because she feels guilty longing for his song when there is so much
trouble surrounding the village.
(b) Collecting
(c) Longing
(d) Persona is a good person though she is very romantic and needs constant love and assurance. Her
conscience is troubled by the desperate situation her kinsmen and friends are undergoing such as
unemployment, disunity, bloodshed and instability.
Catch Us If You Can
In the novel Catch Us If You Can by Catherine MacPhail, a young boy and his grandfather escape from the
homes they have been put it in. I like this story because it is about a family trying to stay together despite the
challenges they face.
Rory lives with his grandfather, Granda. His father had left him and his mother when he was a baby.
Granda took care of them and when Rory‟s mother passed away he continued looking after Rory. Rory loves
his Granda dearly and is determined to look after him now that he is old and has become forgetful. Their
roles are reversed now, with Rory taking on the responsibilities of an adult and Granda becoming more
dependant on Rory.
I like that Rory cheerfully shoulders these responsibilities and deals with the problems Granda creates
with mixture of loving exasperation and a sense of humour. He has to forgo certain pleasures (playing
football) a boy his age would enjoy because of his grandfather but he does not feel resentful about it.
Although Granda creates problems for Rory, he is such a funny and charming man that you cannot help
liking him.
After Granda sets their home on fire, the two are separated and put into different homes. Rory and his
grandfather do not want to be separated. They escape and are determined to stay together despite what the
authorities may say. During their escape they meet many people, most of them helpful and sympathetic,
while others think Rory and his grandfather should be turned in to the authorities. Towards the end of the
story, Rory realises that he needs help to look after Granda. He decides to go to his father and ask him to
help them. With his help, and the social workers‟, Rory is able to continue living with Granda.
This is another reason why I like the story. I like it that Rory will have other family besides his
grandfather and that he will not be alone when his grandfather is gone. I also like the fact the Granda will
reconcile with his son. For all these reasons I like the story Catch Us If You Can.

THE HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS INTRODUCTION The Olympics, an international multi-sporting event, takes place every four years and includes summer and winter games. The games were originally held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC, in 1896, they were revived by a French nobleman, thus beginning the era of the modern Olympic games. ANCIENT OLYMPICS The Olympics Games was first held to honour gods in Greek Mythology. Back then, only men and boys could take part, as athletes were not allowed to wear a single strand on their bodies – they had to compete without clothes. Upon winning an event, the winner was presented with a crown of olive leaves. The olive branch is a sign of hope and peace. MODERN OLYMPICS Today‟s Olympics Games unites the world. The modern Olympic games allowed women to compete along with men for the first time. Medals are given to athletes who are placed first, second, or third in each event. The winners receive gold medals. The runners-up receive silver medals and the third-placed athletes, bronze medals. 6

  • 8. Section C [25 marks] Question 26 - 31 are based on the following passage. The following passage is about a professional hunter of wild animals such as tigers, wolves and leopards that prey on livestock. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 I have spent 20 years hunting wild animals in the Sarawak jungles. The leopard is one of the most unpredictable animals I have ever come across. A cunning animal, it will change its direction for no obvious reason. Although I had faced numerous encounters with ferocious creatures, none scared me the way the leopard did, the day it attacked me. On January 24, a goat was killed at a nearby farm. Two weeks earlier, farmers had reported missing livestock. A leopard had been seen around the area at dusk. On that very day, fifteen experienced men volunteered to track it. Before the hunting party arrived, I went out to look for the tracks. Without a thought, I left my rifle in the car and that was the worst mistake of my life. Unarmed, I was exposed to danger. I stepped into the bushes where the goat was killed. Suddenly, I sensed danger from behind. I looked around and there, under a tree, all set to strike, was an adult leopard. I remembered my rifle and turned back to my car to get it. Then it happened. The leopard leapt onto my back. I heard nothing when it hit me as it happened very fast. The impact was enough to set me off balance. For a moment I felt dizzy, as if the surroundings were spinning. I could not make sense of the things around me. They seemed to be blurring. Before I realised it, I slumped onto the ground with the leopard clawing at my back. I could faintly hear the grunting from the leopard. Although I could feel sharp pain all over my back, I still managed to gather enough strength to roll over. My sudden action took the creature by surprise – I had caused it to let go of me and I was free for a short time. That was the best chance I had to run away. However, before I could do anything, the creature had grabbed my right shoulder. This time, the leopard became more aggressive. It was certainly not going to let me escape and started shaking me vigorously. The sheer strength of the mighty animal was incredible. There was simply nothing I could do to stop it. At that instant, I was sure I was going to die. Without thinking, I placed my hand on the leopard's neck. I realised that to gain control over the animal, I had to act swiftly before it could overpower me. This was something I had learned from my past hunting experience. I never hesitated. I wrestled with the leopard's head and neck over my chest. Knowing that it was either me or the leopard, I had to fight for my life. There was no time to waste. With whatever strength that was left in me, I wrapped my left arm tightly round the leopard's neck, trying to choke it. Furious with my action, the animal let out a loud and deafening growl. In fighting back, it struggled with such force that I had to put more pressure on its neck. A young man, who was a member of the hunting group, was scouting the area. Suddenly, he heard a loud growl. Sensing someone was in danger, he rushed towards the scene. He stood hesitatingly about three metres away from the leopard, not knowing whether he could shoot accurately. Frantically, I yelled at him to move nearer. Bang! The first shot went off target. Then the second shot hit the leopard in the spine. This time he did it. There was a loud growl before it went limp. Seeing the lifeless animal next to me, I was overcome with relief. Looking back, I think the leopard had every reason to attack me. It was starving. When I looked straight into its face, I felt sorry. This was the closest encounter I have ever had with such a fierce animal. 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 8

(b) He was unsure whether he could shoot accurately from the distance of three metres. 30. I think that firstly, he felt sorry that he had to kill the leopard for doing what is part of the basic instinct of a predator, that is, to attack its prey for food. Secondly, I think he felt sorry for the leopard because he could see that it had been starved, probably due to the way mankind had destroyed its natural habitat. 31. (Suggested answer) He realised that he was being attacked by a leopard when he felt it land on his back. The impact threw him to the ground. Though he was in pain he managed to rolled over. His sudden move surprised the leopard and it let him go. However, before he could escape, it caught his shoulder and shook him hard. He grabbed its neck to gain control over the animal. Wrapping his arm tightly round theleopard‟s neck, he tried to choke it. It fought back aggressively but he also pulled tightly. Then, a member of the hunting group heard the leopard‟s growl. He rushed to the scene. He hesitated, wondering if his aim would be accurate from where he was. The hunter shouted to him to move nearer. 32. (a) The poet asked that question because she feels guilty longing for his song when there is so much trouble surrounding the village. (b) Collecting (c) Longing (d) Persona is a good person though she is very romantic and needs constant love and assurance. Her conscience is troubled by the desperate situation her kinsmen and friends are undergoing such as unemployment, disunity, bloodshed and instability. Catch Us If You Can In the novel Catch Us If You Can by Catherine MacPhail, a young boy and his grandfather escape from the homes they have been put it in. I like this story because it is about a family trying to stay together despite the challenges they face. Rory lives with his grandfather, Granda. His father had left him and his mother when he was a baby. Granda took care of them and when Rory‟s mother passed away he continued looking after Rory. Rory loves his Granda dearly and is determined to look after him now that he is old and has become forgetful. Their roles are reversed now, with Rory taking on the responsibilities of an adult and Granda becoming more dependant on Rory. I like that Rory cheerfully shoulders these responsibilities and deals with the problems Granda creates with mixture of loving exasperation and a sense of humour. He has to forgo certain pleasures (playing football) a boy his age would enjoy because of his grandfather but he does not feel resentful about it. Although Granda creates problems for Rory, he is such a funny and charming man that you cannot help liking him. After Granda sets their home on fire, the two are separated and put into different homes. Rory and his grandfather do not want to be separated. They escape and are determined to stay together despite what the authorities may say. During their escape they meet many people, most of them helpful and sympathetic, while others think Rory and his grandfather should be turned in to the authorities. Towards the end of the story, Rory realises that he needs help to look after Granda. He decides to go to his father and ask him to help them. With his help, and the social workers‟, Rory is able to continue living with Granda. This is another reason why I like the story. I like it that Rory will have other family besides his grandfather and that he will not be alone when his grandfather is gone. I also like the fact the Granda will reconcile with his son. For all these reasons I like the story Catch Us If You Can. 13
