1. women
This magazine is aimed at women, ‘ELLE’ is French for female. Using a foreign language e.g. French as a tile tends to
make a magazine or film feel more sophisticated. This magazine is for women who like to wear high end fashion and
are usually aspiring to join the fashion business. This magazine is around £4.00 which is slightly more expensive then
most but the target audience would be able to afford this. As the magazine is so well known it is very common for
the celebrity featured on the front to cover part of the title. Soft colours are often used as it tends to focus more on
the celebrity and will stereotypically appeal to the target audience. On the subscriber magazine it is very clean cut
with little writing on the cover as they don’t need to be persuaded into buying the magazine where as those who
might not regularly buy the magazine would like to see what is inside to see if it is worth it. Its like a blurb on the
back of a book.
The magazine contains an interview with the celebrity featured on the cover, ideas of what celebrities wore to want
event, the seasons new looks from the catwalks, and the latest make up trends. The magazine keeps readers up to
date with the fashion world. The magazine also keeps up to date on relevant topics for example; Emma Watson’s
cover is about her campaign for equal rights for women. There is the usual tips and tricks to a healthy life style.
2. men
This magazine is aimed at males, it includes a variety of influential men from the
president of the united states to actors. These are stereotypically people who males
would admire especially basketball fans when someone like LeBron is on the cover.
The GQ part also tends to be covered slightly by the celebrity as GQ is very well known
around the world. It has influenced men into a new trends of being comfortable in
what would sometimes be considered feminine things such as caring about what they
wear as this magazine usually includes fashion tips for the modern day man. As with all
magazines subscribing is optional so some magazine could have slightly more to entice
the target audience in. the magazine with Obama on has the most common features of
a magazine that is bought in store with the barcode on the front and a lot of writing on
the cover to show what is inside. This magazine tends to write a lot on all the covers
unlike women's magazines.
3. music
I chose billboard as it is a very well known magazine which is based around
music, it also appeals to both males and females. This magazine tends to use
a dark background as it makes the magazine look sophisticated, and non-
childlike. The conventions of a magazine are met as some have the barcode
on the front as these would be sold in stores where as the ones without are
likely to be for subscribers to the magazine.
4. This magazine is made to appeal to young children, it is specifically about the
BBC channel Cbeebies. There is a lot of images on this
5. Key image: the celebrity is a
musician, Lily Allen, she would
appeal to the target audience
which is stereotypically women.
Women usually appear on the
front of ELLE as the reader will
connect more. Lily is looking
directly at the camera, this is
called direct mode of address,
this establishes a relationship
with the reader.
Title: the title is bold and coordinates with
what the celebrity is wearing. It is an easily
recognisable magazine so doesn’t have to be
on full display, the celebrity takes over
around half of the text.
Main puff: the main puff is typically situated here on ELLE
magazine. It is used to attract more attention to the magazine
after the key image. It shows other main articles that the target
audience would like, it helps for sales as this is the type which
can be bought in a shop rather than being subscribed so more
text showing what the magazine includes is in favour of the
magazine being bought. Using +10 shows there is a lot of
‘transformer pieces’ which could influence the readers style.
Anchorage: this shows the key
images name and a preview
of what her interview will be
about, using the rule of three.
‘Lily’ is the boldest piece of
text as people don’t need the
full name to know who she is
as she is very popular. The
text gets smaller or thinner
after this as it is not as
important.
Puff: there is more text to entice
the reader to buy the magazine, I
includes different types of articles
which the stereotypical reader
would connect with personally.
Another celebrity’s name, Tom
Hiddlestone, is on the cover and it
is in a different colour which
makes it stand out.
6. Masthead : the masthead is
bold and subtlety contrasts
with the black and white
cover so that it stands out.
Key image: the model, lily
Donaldson, is looking directly
at the reader, this is called
the direct mode of address.
Women are commonly put on
ELLE as they would be iconic
or a role model to the target
audience, which is
predominately females of 16-
35.
This cover is a
‘subscribers cover’ this
means that ELLE have
already got their
guaranteed audience
so there is no need for
extra information on
the front. So this cover
isn't as cluttered and
has a ‘classy’ look to it
which would appeal to
the customers.
Main puff: this puff is simple and straight forward about what this
issue is about. It has ‘new’ in bold so that it is attention grabbing
and will get the reader excited.
8. As reading can be annoying
or stressful they have put
pictures on as something for
the reader to look at if they
prefer, also it is a picture of
who the article is about. So
any fan of the model can
recognise her and will be
immediately interested in the
article.
In the centre of the
writing is a quote
which Meghan will of
said. This will capture
the reader as it is larger
and easy to read. This
acts like a blurb to a
book as it gives an
incite to what the
article is about. Then
the reader can decide
on whether or not they
want to read it.
At the top in blue is the twitter name of who
the article is about. This has become popular
and almost necessary as social media has
grown and evolved around how we
communicate.
Drop capitals are almost
always used when starting an
article as it grabs the readers
attention and makes it
obvious where the article
starts.
Throughout the magazine ‘ELLEUK.COM’ can be
found as the website will have more articles for
the reader to vie. Also it is constant advertising
throughout the magazine.
