Prototypes - Intern is King
1. Background
• Stakeholder:
Alex: A 21 yr old male. Finished Junior year in
Computer Engineering. Currently doing internship
in a telecommunications company.
Problem Statement:
• Alex needs a way to be made comfortable,
confident and integrated into his team because
his biggest challenges have been dealing with the
intimidation of new environment and his first big
assignment at his internship.
2. Solution 1
• Intern-Mentor matchup website/service that
interns can pair with mentors. Mentors from
around the world can volunteer for this program
• Interns and mentors can make profiles and will
apply to be matched with one another. The
pairing will be completely at the discretion of
each mentor or intern.
Kinda like a dating site but with interns and
mentors : )

6. Feedback
• What worked
– Interesting idea overall. If implemented and marketed well, can be
very useful
– The simplicity of the website – doesn’t try to do too many things
• What could be improved
– More details on the specifics of how the “matching” of mentors with
mentees is done
• Questions
– How will you market this?
– Integration with social media?
– Any confidentiality concerns since interns an mentors don’t
necessarily work for the same company
• Ideas
• You could create partnerships with companies to help out their intern
programs. Gives you a good way to build a membership base
7. Solution 2
• Bi-weekly “Knowledge Sessions” conducted by both Alex and the
full-time team members. Alex will document the knowledge gained
in a repository of his choice - wiki, videos etc. This helps in a few
ways:
a. Alex gets to share knowledge on topics he knows more about than
his full-time co-workers. So Alex's confidence builds. The full-time
team members recognize Alex is good at something. The full-time
team members get to know more about Alex.
b. Alex gets to learn from the training sessions conducted by the full-
time team members. By documenting what he learned in the
session, he is adding value to the team. Most of the knowledge in
Alex's team is carried in team member's brains. The fact that he is
documenting everything helps the entire benefit from knowledge that
only a couple other team members might have had before. Alex is
adding value to his team and therefore becoming an integral part of it.

10. Feedback
• What worked
– The idea is very easy to put into action
– Making the intern do a non-work talk to kickoff the series: nice way to
introduce himself to the team.
• What could be improved
– Bound the solution so it doesn’t cannibalize all of the intern’s time in
the office
– Solution doesn’t have anything new or fresh – the ideas are not very
out-of-the-box
• Questions
– HR approval needed?
– What if this only further stresses the intern?
• Ideas
– Get intern to convert the notes/wikis on some talks (where
suitable/applicable) into company marketing collateral
