2. Scatter Effect
• Dust, pollen, smoke, salt and other
particulates, collectively called “aerosols”, scatter
violet, blue, green and even yellow from sunlight
leaving only orange and red
3. Sun Halos
Halos around the sun happen when high, thin cirrus
clouds are drifting high above your head. Tiny ice
crystals in Earth’s atmosphere cause the halos. They do
this by refracting and reflecting the light.
4. Sundogs
Sundogs are visible when the sun is near the horizon. As
sunlight passes through ice crystals it is bent before reaching
our eyes. This bending of light results in the formation of a
sundog.
5. Aurora borealis
Auroras occur because of charged particles that come from
the Sun. These particles sometimes hit the Earth but we are
protected by the Earth’s magnetic field. However, there are
weak spots in the Earth’s magnetic field near the polar
regions. This is where the charged particles react with
particles in the air and create the aurora borealis, an
amazing natural phenomenon.
6. Fun, Sun Facts:
• The sun is a star.
• It extremely important for life on Earth.
• The sun provides us with energy which
brings life on our planet.
• It defines the seasons, the harvests, and
even the sleep patterns of all living
creatures on Earth.
7. • The sun is the closest star to our planet
• The sun is much bigger than the Earth. In
fact, its radius is 109 times bigger than the
radius of the Earth.
