10. The” Nowy Theatre” is situated in
the historic interior of the former
Donersmack’s steelworks casino,
which was built in 1901. Zabrze’s
theatre started functioning in
1995. The theatre hosted many
outstanding Polish and foreign
actors and directors. Its
performers very often leave its
walls and perform in unusual
places and interiors such as
Botanical Garden or underground
of “Królowa Luiza” Heritage Park.
The building of the Main Post
Office was built in 1913.
Before the II Word War it
used to be the most
luxurious hotel in Zabrze. In
1932 the highest floor of the
building was destroyed in a
fire. After being converted an
unexploited building is
currently waiting for a new
owner.
11. Historic Coal Mine “ Guido”
was carved out by human hand
in underground rocks in
search of coal deposits. Its
beginnings data back to the
early second half of the 19th
century and the permission of
mining was granted on 2nd
October 1855. The mine
originally belonged to
Donnersmarck’s family,
therefore it was given name
after its founder- count Guido
Henckel von Donnersmarck –
the owner of Zabrze.
Nowadays, the coal mine has
three levels- 80, 170,320 metres
with drilled galleries, drifts and
chambers. The tourist route is
constituted of excavations on
two levels- 170 and 320 which
are facilitated with exhibits
enabling visitors to trace
development of the coal mine
and get accustomed with the
technologies applied at the
pivot of past centuries.
12. Steel House- the house was built
within 26 days in 1927 as a building
experiment according to the design by
the anonymous architect. The idea of
the building was to replace the
traditional brick walls with metal
plates. The house is now often called
“a tin” by the local people but on the
other hand it has admires who find it a
very attractive monument.
13. Hotel Admiralspalst- built at the corner of two streets,
between 1924 and 1928, the time of emancipation of
women, overwhelming jazz music and the culture
inspired by art of ancient Egypt. The hotel was pre-
symbol of huge industrial city and the style of a design
was an example of sophisticated American modernism
with the elements of Art Deco. It is worth mentioning
that its construction is placed in the longest street in
Poland- Wolności Street ( The Street of Liberty) which
full length is 8856 metre. Nowadays, the building is
administrated by the private owner.
St. Joseph Church- this is the most outstanding
example of sacral architecture from between
the war period. The church was built in
expressionist style in 1931. Historians of art
agree that since than in Upper Silesia more
perfect temple has never been erected. The
architect Dominikus Bohm from Koln himself
describes his work of art as “the church
brushed with paint of light, where darkness
meets the light. The light is what the temple is
made of, it creates unique reception and
atmosphere. It is a symbol of absolute beauty
and the church itself represents the road to
salvation.
14. The oldest Pressure
Tower in Zabrze as well
as in Silesia
- built in 1871.
The shaft “Maciej” in Maciejów was built in the first half
of the 20th century as ventilating, auxiliary, transporting
and principally draining shaft of the mine “Concordia’,
extracting a very good and valuable at that time coking
carbon. Nowadays, in front of the main gate to the site of
mine there is, accessible for everyone, frame of drinkable
water intake which surfaces directly from the bottom of
“Maciej” shaft. This object due to its historical and
educational values occurs on The Route of monuments of
the technology of Silesian province.
15. Botanical Garden-
it is one of the biggest botanical gardens
in Silesia. On its territory there is over five
thousand various specimens of trees,
shrubs, and flowers that comes from
nearly all over the word. We can
distinguish two parts of the garden. First,
the botanical part , kept in a French style
with the regular ordered sections cut by
paths. The second part is kept in English
style with the pond inhabited by a pair of
swans all the year. It is said that the
Botanical Garden is the oasis of calmness,
green and it is the jungle in the middle of
the town.
