3. Zagreb, is one of the oldest European
cities and is yet one of Europe’s youngest
metropolises. The fact that the Zagreb
archdiocese was founded in 1094 and
that the city was proclaimed a free royal
city in 1242, attests to its long history.
The oldest areas, Gradec and Kaptol, from
which Zagreb arose, are considered to be
one of the most preserved and beautiful
European city centers built in the Art
Nouveau style. The Upper and Lower
Towns are connected through the
Kamenita vrata (Stone gate), yet another
recognizable Zagreb tourist attraction that
is linked to many legends and beliefs, as
well as to faith and peace.
When the Croatian people achieved their
independence in 1991, Zagreb became a
capital - a political and administrative
centre for the Republic of Croatia.

4. For some, the most recognizable place in Zagreb is
its neo-gothic Cathedral situated at Kaptol.
Although it took many centuries to build, the
Cathedral that stands today was completed at the
end of the 19th century.
The Cathedral’s treasury has kept priceless
treasures and objects that date back from the 11
th to 19th century.
The people of Zagreb are especially proud that
during his first visit to the city, Pope John Paul II
held a special mass inside the Zagreb Cathedral,
commemorating 900 years since the founding of
the Zagreb archdiocese.
Many open air events and exhibitions are
organized from spring to autumn. They create a
very special atmosphere in the city and are a true
tourist attraction.
The most important cultural institutions and
hotels (many of which are members of
international hotel chains) are situated in the
heart of the city, only walking distance
depending on weather to Europe’s biggest
outdoor cafe.

5. Along narrow spaces of pedestrian walkways
there are many cultural and art institutions, a
fine blend of the modern and traditional.
Zagreb has sports and recreational areas, parks,
promenades, open air festivals and one of the best
preserved garden produce markets in Europe.
Zagreb has exclusive hotels and congress centers,
period buildings, theatres, museums, restaurants and
nearby getaways.

Croatia. Many famed scientists, artists and athletes come from the city, or work in it.
Zagreb can offer its visitors the Baroque atmosphere of the Upper Town, picturesque

vernacular cuisine.

Hold your breath as mother-nature awaits you. A visit to Plitvice
Lakes is a must. It is only a two hour drive from Zagreb and this
natural scape of mountains and lakes will be a breathtaking
experience. This phenomenon is under UNESCO protection which
vindicates its worth.
Visit Medvedgrad, a medieval fortified town on Medvednica, about
30 - minute drive from the center of Zagreb. Built in 1250, it is one of
the largest and most impressive hilltop fortress towns in Croatia. The
fortress itself is uniquely impressive and commands breathtaking
views of the city of Zagreb below. Take part in a spectacular re-
enactment of a medieval battle with swords, bows and arrows.
Going for a coffee to Split or Dubrovnik? Take a trip to the
Adriatic coast and in particular the cities of Split and Dubrovnik.
Both are under UNESCO protection and are filled with an
immense source of beauty deriving from the past that is
appreciated in the present.
