2. The Global Environment Facility is a partnership for international
cooperation where 183 countries work together with international
institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector, to
address global environmental issues.
Since 1991, the GEF has provided $12.5 billion in grants and leveraged
$58 billion in co-financing for 3,690 projects in 165 developing
countries.
The GEF serves as financial mechanism for the following conventions:
• Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
• United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
• Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
• UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
• Minamata Convention on Mercury
• and supports implementation of the Montreal Protocol on Substances
That Deplete the Ozone Layer (MP) in countries with economies in
transition.
GEF in short
3. GEF work focuses on the following main areas:
Biodiversity, Climate Change (Mitigation and Adaptation), Chemicals,
International Waters, Land Degradation, Sustainable Forest
Management / REDD + and Ozone Layer Depletion
several cross-cutting issues and programs: Results & Learning, Earth
Fund and Public Private Partnerships, Capacity Development, Small
Grants Programme, Country Support Programme and Gender
Mainstreaming
GWP cooperates with the GEF in two areas : Climate Change and
International Waters, and Public Private Partnerships, Capacity
Development and Small Grants Programme as cross-cutting issues.
GEF and GWP - tematic interaction
4. Global: UNDP/GEF and GWP MOU to collaborate on climate change adaptation
under NAP-SGP Partnership. This will consolidate our climate change activities
and contribute to sustainability of our ongoing climate change programs. This
certainly opens the door for future joint fundraising opportunities and in particular
will help us access climate funds managed by the GEF.
IW:LEARN (The GEF International Waters Learning Exchange and Resource
Network supports knowledge sharing in the GEF International Waters portfolio) –
GWP and GWP-MED has ongoing cooperation on Public Private Partnership, and
also partners for the next phase of the project. Global and regional levels.
Regional activities – MED/Drin Project development, looking forward to
implementation.
Small Grant Program – CACENA, SGP funding is used for implementing and
disseminating experience with WACDEP pilot projects in Caucasus.
Examples of cooperation so far
5. • Intensified partnership:
In addition to current projects/activities, GWP is a partner under several GEF
project applications in both focal areas. In practice this means improved
coordination, co-funding and increased efficiency for numerous initiatives.
• Increased amount of projects/deepened implementation focus:
GWPO is undergoing an assessment for the Implementing Partner status for
UNDP/GEF projects. This would allow easier access to the implementation
funding and practical activities on different levels.
• Potentially – accreditation as a GEF Project Agency (as in May 2011 the GEF
Council decided to broaden its partnerships by approving the policies,
procedures, and criteria for a pilot on accrediting new institutions to serve as
GEF Partners for the implementation of GEF projects. WWF, IUCN – Nov 2013).
And higher impact on the policies formulation and new developments.
