2. Yoga and Meditation achieve
the most important change in
our living & that is to change
the way we breath daily.
Normally we use only 25% of
our lung capacity by breathing
through chest muscles.
3. This is modulated through
sympathetic system which is our
friend in emergencies like flight,
freight & fight . The healthy
breathing developed by Yoga &
Meditation which is deep & slow by
using diaphragm which is tranquil,
peaceful & deep breathing mode .
4. The key words are deep and slow
breathing. Deep rhythmic, slow
breathing makes many beneficial
changes in our body like
• Use of all the 100% lung capacity,
raising the tissue oxygen level from
40% to 90%. Whole body feels well
fed with the life giving Oxygen-
vitality.
5. • Lowered diaphragm stretches
itself to widely open the 2 wholes
through which the 2 great blood
vessels (aorta & inferior venacava)
taking blood to & from the heart, to
dilate and relax bringing in less
load for the heart pump is
significantly reduced helping heart
to function a lot better.
6. • Deep slow rhythmic breathing
slows down respiratory rate, per
force & changes many parameters
in the heart.
• Makes the mind tranquil and
peaceful converting the man from
fighting mode to loving mode.
7. These facts were proved in many
clinical studies, 2 of which were
published in prestigious medical
journal-The Lancet. A London based
teaching hospital study, showed
that slow deep breathing increased
tissue perfusion and reduced
breathlessness.
8. made patients get out of bed
reduced the aortic pressure, the
pulmonary artery pressure, the
diastolic pressure in the left
ventricle, and also significantly
increased the ejection fraction
(functional capacity of the heart) in
the patients who were otherwise
dying of terminal heart failure.
9. Another study in California showed
that a group of patients in terminal
heart failure waiting for heart
transplant, death rate was
prohibitively high as no donor was
available. One of the Cardiologists
studied the effect of Yogic slow
deep rhythmic breathing on those
patients with remarkable results.
10. Nearly half of the patients in the
group did not have any more
indication for heart transplant after
the yogic breathing exercise for 6-9
weeks and were discharged home.
There are many cardiologists now
applying these techniques in
routine patient care in the west.
Many more are doing in India.
11. Mr. BKS Iyengar a great Yogi
demonstrated the effect of Yogic
breathing on 2 patients who are in
the stage of terminal heart failure
and given up by many reputed
hospitals in Pune & Mumbai except
the heart transplant is the way for
them to carry on further life.
12. Mr. Iyengar demonstrated all the
scientific data before & after Yogic
breathing exercise on those
patients how they are living a lot
better people now. Very
sophisticated cardiac parameters
were checked before & after yogic
breathing. They have shown
remarkable improvement.
