  1. Version 7.3 Updated November 30, 2009.
  2. The use of Linux in the data center continues to increase with a third of respondents citing the data center as a major focus of the coming year’s deployment of Linux. The increased focus on data centers reflects an intent to make Linux an important part of critical IT infrastructures. The survey also indicates an increase in Linux usage for business applications, indicating that Linux has expanded away from just Web serving and edge computing. The results suggest that Linux’s data center momentum will continue for at least the next few years. 84% of the respondents expect to increase spending on Linux and 31% expect a strong increase in Linux spending.
  3. The analysts also state that Linux is in the third phase of its evolution and has become a recognized data center operating system environment. The first phase of Linux adoptions was its use in basic infrastructure and network edge; the second phase began more deployments in Web serving and applications; and the third phase is in secure and reliable mission-critical applications and databases. What's key about the third phase is the potential for enterprises to deploy Linux solutions in grids, service-oriented architectures (SOAs), clustered databases and massively scalable deployments – both horizontally scaled and vertically scaled with 32, 64 or more cores. The overall proportion of Linux server expenditures in the third generation has grown from 15% to 20% on a larger base of total server revenue of $10.5 billion. This trend is indicative of more enterprises recognizing the proven capabilities of Linux for mission critical workloads, and hardware savings from low-cost industry standard platforms as well as more powerful architectures suitable for server consolidation, such as the mainframe, POWER and Itanium. This is also indicative of users' trust in Linux providers to provide the global support and service levels required by these data center environments.
  4. Slide 31: Industry's Best Partners And as I said earlier, we don't deliver this value all by ourselves. In fact, we're privileged to call some of the most respected names in the IT industry Novell partners. Dell: A leading partner for our PlateSpin Workload Management and ZENworks Endpoint Management solutions HP: Who has made SUSE Linux Enterprise into a cornerstone of its mission-critical computing story while extending Linux ubiquity through the shipment of Linux as a pre load across their desktop solutions. Intel and AMD: Where we have had long standing relationships to optimize their chipsets for Novell solutions. Lenovo, joining Dell, is another world-class PC vendor who's preloading SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop VMware: Where we have collaborated to optimize SUSE Linux Enterprise for the ESX hypervisor and are cultivating the emerging software appliance marketplace. Cisco: Our Linux platform is certified to run on the new Cisco Unified Computing System. Atos Origin: A key services and implementation partner for Identity and Security Management And finally, our newest partner, ACS, who will be deploying Novell Data Center Management and Identity and Security Management solutions throughout their seven global data centers to support thousands of outsourced IT functions for their clients.
