1. Almighty God, as we repeat that Palm Sunday of long ago, we hail Your Son as our King. But
we, like those before us, have selfish reasons for wanting a king. Forgive us when we
misunderstand the kingship of Christ. Give Your Son victory in our lives; that we may totally
follow in the way He leads, and share in God’s Kingdom. In the name of Christ our Lord, we

one of Jesus’ followers. Peter denied it; not once, not twice but three times and then wept bitterly.
Hymn 290 vs.1 “Go to Dark Gethsemane”
P. Jesus is mocked and beaten and is brought before the chief priest and the teachers of the Law.
He was brought before Pilate, who found no reason to condemn Him and sent Him to Herod,
who mocked Him.
L. As Jesus was back again before Pilate, Pilate called together the priests and leaders and the people
saying, “You brought this man to me and said that He was misleading the people. Now, I
have examined Him here in your presence, and I have not found Him guilty of any of the
crimes you accuse Him of. Nor did Herod find Him guilty, for he sent Him back to us.
There is nothing this man has done to deserve death. So I will have Him whipped and let Him
go.”
P. Yet the crowd cried out, “Kill Him! Set Barabbas free!”
Hymn 290 vs.2 “Go to Dark Gethsemane”
L. Pilate tried three times to set Jesus free and the crowd shouted at the top of their voices that He be
crucified.
P. (louder) “Crucify Him!”
L. So finally Pilate passed the sentence on Jesus that they wanted and set free Barabbas, a murderer.
P. The soldiers led Jesus away and hung Him on a cross in between two criminals. One hurled
insults at Him, but the other rebuked his fellow criminal and said, “He has done no wrong.”
Then he asked Jesus to remember him, “when You come into Your Kingdom!” Jesus
said, “I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with Me.”
L: The soldiers and others made fun of Jesus, saying “Hail, King of the Jews!” They even threw dice
for His clothes and offered Him vinegar. Jesus said, “Forgive them Father! They don’t know what
they are doing!”
P. At 12 o’clock, darkness covered the whole country until 3 and the curtain hanging in the
Temple was torn in two. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father! In Your hands I place My
spirit!” He died.
Pastor: Through Jesus’ suffering and death, we believe that He became the source of eternal salvation.
We remember His passion so that we might never forget all which He took upon Himself for our sin,
hereby securing for us God’s promise. We look forward to His coming again in victory.
Hymn 288 “Were You There?”
Remembering the Promise
Benediction
L. This is a day of two celebrations: one is happy, while the other is a grim reminder.
P. “Joy and sorrow are two sides of the same coin,” so let our joy be tempered by our sadness.
L. And let your sadness be turned to joy, for the road to Calvary led to the empty tomb.
P. Thank you for reminding us.
ALL: We will walk this Holy Week with Christ, confident in the glorious outcome.
