Cenni storici 
 
La Guinness è oggi la birra scura più famosa al mondo prodotta dalla Arthur Guinness Son & 
Co,Arthur Guinness iniziò la sua produzione di birra a Leixlip in Irlanda spostandosi già nel 
1759 alla St. James’s Gate Brewery a Dublino. Per la costruzione di questo stabilimento venne 
creato un canale artificiale che, oltre a fornire l’acqua per la produzione della birra, veniva 
usato per trasportare le materie prime ed anche il prodotto finito. Arthur Guinness muore nel 
1803 e, guidata dal figlio Arthur II, la Guinness conosce una forte espansione internazionale 
con carichi di barili consegnati addirittura fino a Cuba e ad altre isole caraibiche via nave. Nel 
1850 Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, figlio di Arthur II prende la guida dell’azienda e qualche 
anno dopo introduce il famoso marchio Guinness: un ovale contenente l’immagine di un’arpa 
e la firma del nonno Arhur. Il successo di questa bevanda è così forte che nel 1886 è già 
quotata alla borsa di Londra e, producendo ben 1.2 milioni di barili l’anno, è la più grande 
fabbrica di birra al mondo.  
Agli inizi del ‘900 dalla Guinness dipendono il sostentamento di 10.000 persone, un abitante 
su trenta della città di Dublino. La Guinness è anche munita di una flotta propria 
d’imbarcazioni per le esportazioni, che ormai si contano in tutti i continenti.  

Nel 1963 apre uno stabilimento in Nigeria, il primo al di fuori di Irlanda e Regno Unito e nello 
stesso anno, col malcontento dei tradizionalisti, termina lo stoccaggio in fusti di legno, 
sostituito ormai completamente da quelli in metallo. 
Anche se molti credono che la Guinness sia una birra particolarmente sostanziosa e nutriente, 
definendola addirittura un “pasto in bicchiere”, la Guinness contiene solamente 198 calorie 
per pinta, meno di un succo d’arancia o di un bicchiere di latte scremato. Alcuni studi hanno 
anche dimostrato che questa birra ha effetti benefici sul cuore per via di alcuni composti 
antiossidanti che contiene, simili a quelli della frutta e della verdura. 
Al contrario di quanto molti pensino, il termine “stout” non fu inventato proprio dalla 
Guinness, visto che se ne trovano tracce in alcuni documenti già 50 anni prima della nascita di 
Arthur, ma sicuramente è la birra che più ne è associata nell’immaginario dei bevitori.  
La Guinnes, Pur riconoscendosi l'indubbia qualità del prodotto, deve però anche ammettersi 
che il successo della stout irlandese per eccellenza fu dovuto, in parte, alla indovinatissima 
campagna pubblicitaria studiata, negli anni Trenta, dall'agenzia S.H.Benson, basata sullo 
slogan "Guinness is Good for You" ("la Guinness ti fa bene").

Nel 1999 la Guinness crea uno spot che lascia tutti a bocca aperta,viene infatti riconosciuto 
come uno dei migliori spot di tutti i tempi. 
Lo spot inizia con dei normali surfisti che scrutano l’oceano per cercare l’onda 
perfetta,condizione reale di tutti i surfisti e di primo acchito potrebbe sembrare imitativa, ma 
quando quest’ultimi vedono che sta per arrivare la fatidica onda,si tuffano in mare pronti a 
cavalcarla,ma da quest’ultima escono dei cavalli che inferociti corrono verso la riva 
trasportando con sé i surfisti  stessi in un turbinoso e violento movimento. 
La pubblicità termina quindi con i surfisti che escono dall’acqua stremati ma finalmente 
soddisfatti e felici. 
Lo spot termina accompagnato dallo slogan “Le cose buone arrivano per chi sa aspettare”. 
Lo spot quindi è fortemente differenziativo, questo slogan è stato utilizzato per 
contraddistinguere il processo del versare una pinta di Guinness famoso nei pub irlandese. 
Per entrare nei dettagli tecnici, la pinta di Guinness dovrebbe essere versata in 119,5 secondi 
e il processo non deve essere affrettato per godere del connubio di sapori dovuti al lungo 
processo di produzione e dagli ingredienti che da sempre contraddistinguono la famosa e 
unica birra irlandese. 
 
       LA MODA COME MODELLO PROVENIENTE DAI CETI PIU’ ELEVATI 
 

La birra è una bevanda ormai onnipresente in tutti i locali e pub, per la birra irlandese 
Guinness il discorso cambia, infatti, se ci si vuol gustare una pinta di quest’ultima bisogna 
andare in pub appositi che già dall’esterno presentano il marchio riconoscitivo della birra 
stessa,oppure si può trovare in pub che prettamente distribuiscono Guinness e ne posseggono 
una cospicua varietà. 
In tutti gli spot Guinness vi è il tema ricorrente del faticare per una buona causa,del faticare  
per godersi una libidine unica nel suo genere.  
Se bevi una Guinness, appartieni a un ceto più elevato ma sempre nella media,che ha tempo di 
aspettare,che sa di spendere di più,ma con la consapevolezza di bere qualcosa di unico. 
 
LA MODA COME MODELLO D’ACCELERAZIONE DEL TEMPO E DELLA PERCEZIONE DI

Dal 2005 in poi gli spot cambiano messaggio, si passa, infatti, dallo storico “Le cose buone 
arrivano per chi sa aspettare” a “Portarla alla vita”.

Il video mostra una comunità “costruire” un proprio mondo parallelo e giungere alla fine del 
faticoso processo solo per creare una pinta di Guinness, surreale sì, ma invoglia a bersi una 
Guinness dopo una giornata di lavoro. Questo tipo di spot cambia la percezione di
