                              Bambrough Castle

Home to the Kings of Northumbria this coastal castle was completely
restored in 1900. It holds collections of china, porcelain, furniture, paintings,
arms and armour. The castle is the home of the Armstrong family, and the
building is all in use which maintains a welcoming lived-in atmosphere. A
Royal Centre by AD547, the rocky outcrop has been occupied since the
prehistoric period.

Belsay Hall

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens are the
creation of the Middleton family, over more
than seven centuries. First came the castle, still
 dominated by its massive 14th-century
defensive 'pele tower'. Built as a refuge at
a time of Anglo-Scottish warfare, it was also
designed to impress: it still displays rare traces
of elaborate medieval wall paintings. In more
peaceful times a Jacobean mansion wing was
added: here the family lived until Christmas
Day 1817, when they moved into Belsay Hall.

Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral has been described as ‘one of the great architectural
experiences of Europe’. It is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or
Norman) architecture.

Gibside

The Gibside Estate, overlooking the River
Derwent about four miles west of Gateshead,
was created by land owner and coal baron
George Bowes between 1729 and 1760. For
whatever reason, the estate was allowed to fall
into disrepair. But now, in the hands of The
National Trust, is currently in the midst of an
extensive renovation programme.

The Farne Islands

The Farne Islands are situated between two and five miles off the
Northumberland Coast. There are 28 islands in total, 15 of which can be seen
at high tide, with the largest island being Inner Farne.

                                                   Historically the Farne
                                                   Islands are associated
                                                   with St Aidan and St
                                                   Cuthbert, both of whom
                                                   used the islands as a
                                                   place to mediate in utter
                                                   solitude.

The Northumberland heroine, Grace Darling spent most of her short life on
the lighthouses here, first on Brownsman's Island and then on Longstone
Island.
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne In 635AD St. Aidan came from Iona and chose
to found his monastery on Lindisfarne. The Christian message flourished
here and spread
throughout the Word

Holy Island is linked to
the mainland by a long
causeway. Twice each
day the tide from the
North Sea covers the
road. Tide times and
heights can be
accurately predicted
from the phases of the
Moon and this is used to

                                     13
predict 'safe' crossing times.
     Nevertheless, travellers should
     remain vigilant if crossing.

Marsden Rock

One of the most magnificent rock formations in Britain, Marsden Rock is
renowned for it's sea bird colonies, with thousands of pairs of Kittiwakes,
Fulmars, Gulls and Cormorants. The rock was a famous arch, created by the
force of the sea, but it changed forever when the arch collapsed in 1996.

The ghost of John the Jibber is said to haunt the area, he died a slow death
suspended in a bucket half way down the cliff face, after betraying fellow
smugglers to the Customs men.

Newcastle's most instantly

George V on 10th October 1928.
Movietone News recorded his speech
for one of their first talkies, local
schoolchildren were given a day off,
and in the days after its opening
unprecedented traffic jams were
caused by those wishing to use this
toll-free crossing. The jams continue
to the present day.

Penshaw Monument

Penshaw Monument was built in 1844, it is Sunderland's most prominent
landmark. It dominates the skyline and standing on Penshaw hill it's visible
for miles around. Modelled on the Greek Temple of Theseion, it was in
memory of John George Lambton born 1792, 1st Earl of Durham, otherwise
known as Radical Jack. Public subscription paid for the monument, John and
Benjamin Green of Newcastle were responsible for the design.

claimed the lives of many mariners. The lighthouse started operating in 1871
and was, at the time the most advanced in the world.

The Golub Castle is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved
  fortresses in Poland.

The castle in Golub-Dobrzyń was built in the beginning of the 14th
century as a defensive fortress. It was many times attacked, destroyed,
rebuilt and finally converted in the Renaissance style as a palace of the
princess Anna Vasa.

reconstructed after the World War II total destruction. The
contemporary Warsaw is a big city, Poland‟s capital and its cultural,
scientific, educational and tourist center.

  • 9. E NGL A N D E NGL A N D Bambrough Castle Home to the Kings of Northumbria this coastal castle was completely restored in 1900. It holds collections of china, porcelain, furniture, paintings, arms and armour. The castle is the home of the Armstrong family, and the building is all in use which maintains a welcoming lived-in atmosphere. A Royal Centre by AD547, the rocky outcrop has been occupied since the prehistoric period. 9
  • 10. Belsay Hall Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens are the creation of the Middleton family, over more than seven centuries. First came the castle, still dominated by its massive 14th-century defensive 'pele tower'. Built as a refuge at a time of Anglo-Scottish warfare, it was also designed to impress: it still displays rare traces of elaborate medieval wall paintings. In more peaceful times a Jacobean mansion wing was added: here the family lived until Christmas Day 1817, when they moved into Belsay Hall. 10
  • 11. Durham Cathedral Durham Cathedral has been described as ‘one of the great architectural experiences of Europe’. It is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or Norman) architecture. 11
  • 12. Gibside The Gibside Estate, overlooking the River Derwent about four miles west of Gateshead, was created by land owner and coal baron George Bowes between 1729 and 1760. • 13. The Farne Islands The Farne Islands are situated between two and five miles off the Northumberland Coast. There are 28 islands in total, 15 of which can be seen at high tide, with the largest island being Inner Farne. Historically the Farne Islands are associated with St Aidan and St Cuthbert, both of whom used the islands as a place to mediate in utter solitude. The Northumberland heroine, Grace Darling spent most of her short life on the lighthouses here, first on Brownsman's Island and then on Longstone Island. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne In 635AD St. Aidan came from Iona and chose to found his monastery on Lindisfarne. The Christian message flourished here and spread throughout the Word Holy Island is linked to the mainland by a long causeway. Twice each day the tide from the North Sea covers the road. Tide times and heights can be accurately predicted from the phases of the Moon and this is used to 13

  • 15. Marsden Rock One of the most magnificent rock formations in Britain, Marsden Rock is renowned for it's sea bird colonies, with thousands of pairs of Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Gulls and Cormorants. The rock was a famous arch, created by the force of the sea, but it changed forever when the arch collapsed in 1996. The ghost of John the Jibber is said to haunt the area, he died a slow death suspended in a bucket half way down the cliff face, after betraying fellow smugglers to the Customs men. 15
  • 16. Newcastle Newcastle's most instantly recognisable structure is the Tyne Bridge. It was opened by King George V on 10th October 1928. Movietone News recorded his speech for one of their first talkies, local schoolchildren were given a day off, and in the days after its opening unprecedented traffic jams were caused by those wishing to use this toll-free crossing. The jams continue to the present day. Linking Gateshead with Newcastle via Gateshead Quays (described as one of the best places in Europe by Tony Blair) and Newcastle's Quayside, the bridge not only serves a functional purpose as the River Tyne's only foot and cycle bridge, but its grace and engineering attract people from all over the world. 16

Public subscription paid for the monument, John and Benjamin Green of Newcastle were responsible for the design. 17
