Just returned from a w eek in Maui and really enjoyed having this book as a guide to the island. I
also had several other books like Fodor’s, etc, but in my opinion this book is the best of the top 10 products on amazon (2)
bunch. I have often w ondered w hy guidebooks are of tw o varieties; either a drab sanitized
book full of text and no color and pictures, or a book full of pictures w ith minimal w ritten top10 website (1)
substance. This book seems to combine the best of both, authoritative in depth text based on
the experiences of someone w ho lives on the island as w ell as nice color maps and pictures of travel (2)
notable sights. For the most part my experiences jived w ith the authors commentary.
Some of my ow n observations. The most exclusive areas on the island are around Kapalua and
W ialea. These areas are beautiful but they are also somew hat remote from the “action”. If your interested these
idea of a good holiday is to stay on a resort than these areas are great, but if you w ant some
local culture/flavor, good restaurants, shopping and nightlife, and proximity, than I w ould books?
recommend staying in the Kaanapali area w hich has nice resorts and is also close to Lahaina,
the tow n w here all the action is.Using this book I visited some of w hat I thought w ere the most
beautiful beaches on the island, Big Beach on the south side and black sand beach, red sand
beach, Koki Beach and Hamoa beach near Hana. Enjoyed the drive to Hana, but unlike the
author of this book I actually thought the beaches w ere more of a highlight than the w aterfalls,
w hich I didn’t think w ere all that spectacular. Koki Beach and Hamoa Beach w ere incredible and
Stealing Jake
the drive around Haneoo Rd. w as breathtaking.

I’ve spent a total of 6 w eeks on Kauai and w hile I’ve checked out 4 different guidebooks on Privacy Information
Kauaii I have used this book exclusively w hile on island. The authors do a great job of making it
quick and easy for you to experience the best beaches, hikes, and other activities — just turn to
the section you’re interested in (“Beaches” for example) and look for the big fat diamond symbol
indicating a “gem” of an item (I w ish all guidebooks did this as concisely and w ell as these folks
do). The pictures are great and really help decision-making. Only rarely have I disagreed w ith
their advice. Some readers have complained about restaraunt and helicopter tour
recommendations — but that’s such a small part of w hat the island has to offer, and frankly I
don’t recall be led astray by the book in these activities. If you’re mainly concerned about
restaraunts and helicopters, simply stay at the Hyatt Regency and have their concierge set up a
helicopter ride for you (the Hyatt can’t be beat for all-around luxury, good restaraunts, and
quality service). But if you w ant to explore, and get the most from, the glorious natural beauty
of this island, this is, as others have said, the only book you’ll need. I only w ish they had one for
Maui — but I’m stoked they have one for the Big Island and am ordering it today.

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed
3. Into the Wild
Book Image
Review: By M Barry
There is little suspense (in the traditional sense of the w ord) in Krakauer’s Into the W ild, as
anyone w ho reads the synopsis or picks up the book instantly learns that it is the story of a
young man, Chris McCandless, w ho ventures into the Alaskan W ilderness and w ho never gets
out. Chris’ body is found in an abandoned bus used by moose hunters as a makeshift lodge,
and Krakauer skillfully attempts to retrace his steps in an effort both to understand w hat w ent
w rong, and to figure out w hat made McCandless give aw ay his money, his car, and head off into
Denali National Forest in the first place.
His book w as one of the most haunting, unforgettable reads in recent years for me. I w as
mezmerized by passages in the author’s other best-selling masterpiece Into Thin Air, such as
the passage involving stranded and doomed guide Rob Hall, near the Everest summit, talking to
his pregnant w ife via satellite phone to discuss names for their unborn child. How ever, I w as
unprepared for the depths of emotion felt in reading Into the W ild – it literally kept me up at
nights, not just reading but thinking about the book in the dark. Some review ers criticized the
book because they thought McCandless demonstrated a naive and unhealthy lack of respect for
the Alaskan w ilderness. This is no hike on the Appalachian Trail – Chris w as literally dropped off
by a trucker into the middle of now here, w ith no provision stores, guides, or means of
assistance nearby at his disposal. He had a big bag of rice and a book about native plants,
designed to tell him w hich plants and berries he could eat. “How could he have been so
stupid?”, they ask.
3. Well, I certainly didn’t feel compelled to give aw ay my belongings, pack some rice and a Tolstoy
novel and w alk into the w oods after reading the book, but the author does a remarkable job of
exploring McCandless the person, including passages derived from interview s w ith the many
poeple w hose lives he touched in his odyssey as he drove and then hitch-hiked cross country
from his w ell-to-do suburban home. Some of the more touching parts of the book involved
tearful reminisces by some of these old aquaintances w hen they learned he had perished.
Krakauer also throw s in for good measure an illuminating passage about a similar death-defying
climb that he foolishly attempted at about the same age as McCandless, w ith little training and
preparation, providing insight into w hat makes a person attempt a dangerous climb or hike. He
even tells several fascinating tales, all of them true, of other recreational hikers w ho w ere
stranded in the w ilderness.
By the end of the book, I thought I understood McCandless’ character, and I thought Krakauer
w as probably right in putting his finger on exactly w hat caused his death. I w as moved by his
plight regardless of his possible foolishness in venturing into Denali, and the final scenes
involving Chris’ family w ere emotionally devastating. You need not be an outdoorsman to
appreciate it, and in fact unlike Into Thin Air the book is completely accessible to those w ho
know nothing about the subject. I think this book is destined to become a classic.

4. Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
Book Image
Review By A Customer
W itty, thorough, useful, honest, and best of all, accurate to a fault. I took my family to Haw ai’i
armed w ith this book and w e w ere not disappointed once. This guide w as w ritten by residents
of Kailua and their local know ledge show s. In the book’s introduction they claim to have spent
tw o years putting this guide together. Every minute of that effort show s in the result.
The best feature of the book is that is is organized as a set of driving tours from the Kailua-Kona
and Hilo areas. Almost everyone visiting the Big Island travels by rented car and stays in either
of these areas. The struc- ture is perfect for a tourist, right dow n to listing the mile-marker
numbers w here unmarked sideroads lead to beaches, volcano view spots, and other points of
interest not on the rental car maps. It is loaded w ith color photographs, maps in many level of
details — including hiking trails — and easy-to-spot icons of the things to see and do. We visited
friends w ho have lived in Kailua for years w ho w ere surprised at how many new things they
learned.I have to stop now before I embarass myself. If you visit the Big Island and don’t take
this book w ith you your trip w ill be that much less fun.

5. Rand McNally Large Scale 2012 Road Atlas (Rand McNally Large Scale Road Atlas U. S. A.)

4. Review By Stephen Pellerine
I have loved maps since I w as a teenager. At one level, I just enjoy picking a state and seeing
its geographical features and how I w ould get from one place to another. This Rand McNally
Road Atlas is one that I have been using for over 40 years. The 2007 version is top notch, like its
predecessors. The maps that suggest how long it takes to go from one place to another are
terrific; the suggested attractions that one might visit are very helpful; tourist and hotel
information is very nice.
How ever, it is the state by state maps that are the central feature of this publication (as w ell as
maps of Mexico and Canada and Puerto Rico). Anyone w ho is interested in how to get from Point
A to Point B w ill revel in this w ork.
There are even road construction updates available online for those w ho buy these maps.
All in all, this is one of those “golden oldies” that merits consideration by those of us w ho w ant
to know how to get from one place to another.

6. A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Official Guides to the
Appalachian Trail)
Book Image
Review by Jerry Clyde Phillips (Sutton, Vermont)
This is much more than a travelogue of tw o neophyte hikers on the Appalachian Trail, and
readers looking for a blow by blow account of the travails of Bill Bryson and his companion,
Stephen Katz, w ill be disappointed. Hiking provides only a backdrop to a heartfelt discourse on
the social condition of America, local history, the environment, and the complexities of friendship.
The pretext for the book w as Bryson’s return to the United States after tw enty years in Britain,
and his interest in “rediscovering America” after such a lengthy absence.
The vast majority of the review s of the book cite its hilarity (one review er called it “choke-on-
your-coffee funny”), and indeed there are very many funny parts. How ever, the deeper I got into
the book, I detected a strong shift in the author’s sentiment from satire to deep introspection.
His observations became more acute, more angry, and more individualized as his long hike
constantly brings to his mind the fragile environment of the Trail, the insanity of bureacrats
entrusted w ith the AT, and his ow n personal limitations. This w as my first encounter w ith Bill
Bryson, and w hile I found him entertaining, a beautiful w riter, and an astute observer, some
readers w ill be put off my his sharp satiric w it. It is certain that he w ill offend somebody. A friend
of mine, w ho also read the book, w as very much upset by the fact that Bryson and Katz didn’t
hike all 2,200 miles of the Trail, and that somehow their “failure” should prevent the telling of
the story. This is utter nonsense and just throw s more manure onto the present dung heap that
has accumulated from the participants involved in peak bagging, w ilderness races, and
5. experiential therapy groups.
Bryson and Katz at least tried to hike the entire AT, and they returned from their hike as
changed men w ho learned many lessons about the w ilderness and friendship. Tow ards the end
of the book, the tw o men are talking about the hike. W hen Katz remarks that “w e did it,” Bryson
reminds him that they didn’t even see Mount Katahdin, much less climb it. Katz says, “Another
mountain. How many do you need to see, Bryson?” I agree w ith Katz (and ultimately Bryson).
They hiked the Appalachian Trail.

Review By Mark
I’ve had a Rand McNally before and for my third trip to the States I purchased another one this
year. Back in Europe w e’ve only got the 2011 version, so I w as glad I could order the 2012
edition on Amazon.
The Rand McNally Road Atlas is a great roadbook, just get in the car and drive!
Big maps w ith driving distances and driving time, w ith detailed parts of cities. One of the best
things are the scenic routes, highlighted w ith little green dots so you know the prettiest roads
to drive.I’ve chosen this one and not the one w ith extra cover, because the next time I’ll use it,
there’s going to be an new version, so it w asn’t necessary for me. Just a great roadbook.

Review By jbsand
This is the best guide book to Walt Disney World, Orlando, FL that I have found.
This is the second edition I purchased.
Has the most information in one book I can find.
Tells the good and the bad.
Can be complex. They give you schedules and plans to see the most, w hich may seem like a
military drill, but you can read these guides and use the pieces you like.

Review By Alfred I. Nagel (Marietta, GA, US)
For those w ho travel by highw ay (vs airplane) this is a very valuable tool. It is especially great
for those w ho do not necessarily plan their trip on a mile-by-mile basis. This is our second
edition for this book and w ill continue to update every year or tw o as w e continue to travel. It
does not replace your GPS, but has a great deal of information that your GPS does not have and
– especially – it a much more accessable and easy to use foremat.

10. Oahu Revealed: The Ultimate Guide to Honolulu, Waikiki & Beyond
Book Image
Review By R Schmidt (Honolulu, HI USA)
Travel books are probably a blast to research and w rite, but after they go to press, the authors
probably start preparing for a different kind of “blast,” as in the “w hat planet did you come from
that you rated my favorite restaurant as a dive!” kind.Oahu Revealed is blisteringly candid. You
w ant a travel guide that sings praises everyw here and for everything? Find yourself another
book. How ever, if you w ant to be prepared for the lines at Hanauma Bay, w ant to know w hat
“ocean view ” means in a hotel tw o blocks from the beach, w ant to know w hether the
Polynesian Cultural Village is a rip-off or entertaining, and how many speed bumps you have to
drive over to visit the Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau near Pupukea, then this is the book. It is
refreshingly honest, candid, funny, interesting, and educational. I found myself agreeing w ith
the author’s comments far more than I disagreed. And yes, there w ere times I disagreed. I like
the folk at North Shore Diving (now Deep Ecology). And I’m queazy about encouraging
beginners to rent a kayak and just start paddling offshore. But if this book mirrored my mind,
then I w ould have w ritten it!
Here’s a w arning, how ever. There are many folk on Oahu w ho are upset w ith this book, and it is
not just from getting more visitors into personal favorite places. It also involves having more
visitors actually affecting the nature of places, w ith added trash, human w aste, trespassing, and
trampling. Ask a local, and know before you go. Don’t trash Oahu, please!
