14. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
From the day of Stephen’s death a great persecution
broke out against the church in Jerusalem. Everyone
except the apostles were scattered throughout
Judea and Samaria. Godly men came and buried
Stephen and deeply mourned for him.
But Saul began to try and destroy the church. Going
from house to house, he dragged off both men and
women and put them in prison.
The ones who had been scattered because of the
persecution shared the gospel wherever they went
15. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
Philip went down to a city in Samaria
and proclaimed the Messiah there.
When the crowds heard what Philip
said and saw the signs he performed,
they all paid close attention to what he
said because demonic spirits came out
of many people with loud shrieks and
others who were paralyzed or lame
were healed. As a result there was
great joy in that city.
16. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
For some time a man named Simon
had performed supernatural feats
through sorcery and had amazed all of
the people in Samaria. He bragged
about being someone great and all the
people both high and low took notice
of him. They said things like, “This
man is rightly called ‘The Great Power
of God.’ ” They followed him because
he had amazed them for a long time
with his powers of sorcery.
17. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
When they believed what Philip was
saying as he proclaimed the gospel of
the kingdom of God and the name of
Jesus Christ they were baptized, both
men and women.
Simon followed Philip everywhere and
was astonished at the signs and
miracles Philip was doing.
18. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
When the apostles in Jerusalem heard
that Samaria had accepted the Word of
God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.
When they arrived they prayed for the
new believers to receive the Holy Spirit,
because the Holy Spirit had not yet come
upon any of them. They had only been
baptized in the name of Jesus. When
Peter and John placed their hands on
them they received the Holy Spirit.
19. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
When Simon saw that the Spirit was
given through the laying on of the
apostles’ hands he offered them
money and said, “Will you give me this
ability so that everyone I lay my hands
upon will receive the Holy Spirit? ”
20. ACTS 8
The Work of God in Samaria
Peter answered, “May your money perish
with you if you think you could buy the
gift of God with money. You have no part
or share in this ministry because your
heart is not right before God. Repent of
this wickedness and pray to the Lord so
that he can forgive you for having
thoughts like this in your heart. I see that
you are full of bitterness and are captive
to sin.” Simon answered, “Pray to the
Lord so that nothing you have said will
happen to me.”
