THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES

•Massachusetts
•New Hampshire
•Vermont
•Rhode Island
•Connecticut
3 ATTRIBUTES
1. Their natural resources were fish, whales, and
forests. They also imported agricultural products
from other colonies.
2. Their religion was puritans which means they had
no religious freedom.
3. Their climate was the coldest of the three regions
and that led to difficult winters but less disease.
THE MIDDLE COLONIES
STATES INCLUDED
•Delaware
•Pennsylvania
•New Jersey
•New York
3 ATTRIBUTES
1. Their natural resources were good farmland, timber, furs
and coal. Iron ore was a one of their most important
natural resource, however.
2. The geography and climate of the Middle Colonies was a
mix of the New England and Southern colonies as well.
3. Their religion was not dominated by a specific religion
which gave way to religious freedom for Quakers,
Catholics, Lutherans, Jews and other religions.
THE SOUTHERN COLONIES
STATES INCLUDED
•Maryland
•Virginia
•North Carolina
•South Carolina
•Georgia
3 ATTRIBUTES
1. The natural resources for the southern colonies were
cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar cane and a purple dye
called indigo.
2. The religion was not dominated by a specific religion
which made religious freedom for Baptists, Anglicans and
others a great thing.
3. Being the warmest of the three regions, winters were not
difficult to survive, and warmer climate gave rise to the
spread of disease.
TRIANGULAR TRADE
• The triangular trade consisted of trades from England to
Africa, Africa to the Americas, and then The Americas back
to England.
• The raw materials and natural resources like sugar,
tobacco, rice and cotton were found in the colonies and
trades back to England.
• Manufactured products from England and Europe such as
guns, cloth, beads were traded back to Americas.
• Slaves from West Africa were traded to the Americas.
THE GREAT AWAKENING
• The Great Awakening was a period of religious awakening
and reform for the colonies during those times.
• The first Great Awakening was a spiritual renewal that swept
the American Colonies. Most particularly the New England
colonies during the first half of the 18th Century.
• The Great Awakening was a movement encouraged
religion during the 1700's by the weakening role that religion
played in the everyday lives of colonists.
THE ENLIGHTENMENT
• In the period known as The Enlightenment, Europe saw cultural changes
started by a loss of faith in religious places and a turn toward human rights,
science, and what they considered a democratic republic.
• Enlightenment ideas were also influential in the Constitution of the United
States.
• The Enlightenment also consisted the rise of capitalism and the wide
availability of printed materials. For example The French encyclopedia and
combined free-thinking articles with technological information.
