This document evaluates a group's opening film sequence. It includes 9 frames that were filmed to introduce the characters, show camera work and editing, set up the story, suggest the thriller genre, feature costumes and props, show the setting and location, add special effects, and display the film title. The group chose Twentieth Century Fox as the production company to distribute the film due to its experience with thrillers. They identified their target audience as a 19-year-old man interested in low-budget thrillers. Through this project, the group learned how to use technologies like a flip camcorder, editing software, and uploading to YouTube.
2. Question One. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. This is our contact sheet for our opening sequence
3. First Frame - How the Characters are Introduced. We introduced the characters by taking shots of the main characters and then each shot of a separate character we added their name to the shot.
4. Second Frame – Camera work and editing. For the second frame we did a pan shot, this is where we started filming at the left side of the room and then panned to the right side. We added a black and white effect and increased the brightness and contrast to get a strong, bright looking effect for this shot.
5. Third Frame – Story and how the opening sets it up. The third frame is a close up shot of one of our props used, a mobile phone. This shot is key to our film opening because it begins the mystery of our plot.
6. Forth Frame – Genre and how the opening suggests it. This frame is our opening shot, this is where the kidnapper contacts the dad by phone. Our film opening is a thriller and this opening shot suggests that because we lowered the brightness and we added some background music to add tension.
7. Fifth Frame – Costumes and props. The fifth frame is just an example of some of the props we used. Our props included; rope, two mobile phones, two bottles of white spirit, a chair, and a pillow case.
8. Sixth Frame – Setting and location. This frame is the setting and location of part of the film opening. This was filmed in a hardware shop in Reigate, We filmed it here because it had all of the props we would like to use and it can build up suspicion from the viewers.
9. Seventh Frame – Special effects. In this frame we added some special effects to the shot. To get the video lens we added the effect called ‘viewfinder’ and we edited the colour saturation to green so it looks as if its being filmed on a video camera.
10. Eighth Frame – the title of the film. This frame is about showing the viewers the title of the film. We made an effect by cutting the frame into quarter second frames and then adding different blurs to the different frames which gave the effect of flickering. We picked the name ‘RANSOM’ because it explains the film opening.
11. Ninth Frame – Title font and style. For the title fonts we used a font called ‘chance’. All titles were written in the same font, on a black background in the colour white.
12. Question two. Eddie Marsan, Actor from The disappearance of Alice Creed. Christian Grant played the position of Eddie Marsan, in our film opening
13. How does your product represent particular social groups? The picture of the two characters aren’t all that different apart form the age difference. They both share the similar facial expressions, both are looking away from the camera. In contrast they have different hair styles, one character has long dark hair that covers parts of his face whereas the other character has shorter lighter hair.
14. Q.3 - What Kind of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product and Why? By Group 051
15. Productions Companies A production company works with the physical side to making a movie. It can also be responsible for funding and raising the money to make the film. It sells their film to a studio or a theatre. It can be a well known high budget production company or a low budget one. Our chosen production company is Twentieth Century Fox. This is because it has produced films such as Fight Club. This hasn’t got the same plot as ours or anything really similar but it is a thriller which ours is.
16. Distribution Company Research Twentieth Century Fox – Twentieth Century Fox would potentially be a company that we could use to distribute our thriller film. This is because Twentieth Century Fox has also distributed other thrillers. One thriller it distributed was Taken, this is good because we based our opening partly on this film. Paramount Pictures – Paramount pictures would be a possibility for the distribution of our film, because it has produced well known thrillers. One of these is the 1960’s film Psycho.
17. Lionsgate – This would be a good distributor because it is a known for distributing modern thrillers. One of their most recent thrillers is The Next Three Days. Our chosen distributor is Twentieth Century Fox. This is because it has distributed one of the films that we have based ours on. Also it is very well known in general and for producing other thriller films such as phone booth and The day after tomorrow. It also distributes thriller television shows such as 24. I think that our film would fit in perfectly with the types of thrillers Twentieth Century Fox produces and distributes.
18. Q. 4 – Who would be the audience for your media product?
19. TARGET AUDIENCE This is Ted Grant. He is 19 years old and he lives in south London. He dresses fairly casual, in jeans and a T-shirt. He enjoys going out with his friends, playing lacrosse and dancing. He enjoys social gatherings and attending Jazz clubs. His favourite films are low budget thrillers. He most likes The disappearance of Alice of Creed. He goes to the cinema with his friends to watch either comedies, horrors of suspenseful thrillers. He also surfs when he visits family in Cornwall. He also really enjoys bungee jumping. His favourite food is BLT. His favourite TV shows are skins, misfits and the ballet channel. His favourite type of music is musical numbers, Jazz and classical. His all time favourite radio station is Classical fm. I think our film would appeal to this type of person as it if full of twists and risks. He seems to take risks with bungee jumping as one of his past times.
