Why Companies opting for Environment
     Friendly or Green environment
• Greening your business computing strategies is not
only a smart way to enhance your brand in the eyes of
customers: it can save you money in both electricity
costs and equipment wear-and-tear. In fact, an
  overwhelming majority – 71 percent – of mid-size
companies say cutting costs is their primary motivation
for pursuing green IT strategies, according to research
  from the Aberdeen Group.
• Green IT not only pays off for small- and medium-size
businesses, but it does so many times over.
                                               Contd…
• “We’ve found that companies that are most
mature with green IT initiatives are seeing
sometimes as much as four- or five-fold more
savings in those areas than peers who don’t have
green IT initiatives in place,” said David
Hatch, senior vice president and general manager
  at the Aberdeen Group.
• As one Canadian CTO pointed out in a 2009 IBM
study, “Rising costs of fuel and electricity furthers
the business case, so even if it wasn’t a green
initiative, the business case is there. So, it’s not
that we’re tree huggers, but we’re interested in
saving money, as well as consumption and
  emissions.”

HP
Whether it's being voted an environmentally responsible 'Green Giant' by Fortune Magazine, recycling the
Equivalent of 600 jumbo jet airliners in 2006 alone or designing energy-efficient, environmentally sound
products, services and operations, HP is committed to reducing our environmental impact.

It's a big responsibility for one of the world's largest IT companies. Learn how HP takes it on.
Protect the earth
Start with the old equipment, tucked away in your storage closet. It may be past its prime, but it may not be not
past its worth. HP makes it easier to trade-in, recycle, reuse or donate your end-of-life IT assets.
      – Over 164 million pounds recycled in 2006:
      – HP on track to surpass its goal of recycling 1 billion cumulative pounds (455 million kilograms) by the
          end of this year.
      – Environmental sustainability — HP's commitment: AXA Award goes to HP for corporate sustainability
Control energy costs
You've heard of ENERGY STAR® rated refrigerators? How about an ENERGY STAR® rated PC? HP's got the industry's
first, along with smart ways to put the cool on energy costs from the den to the desktop and datacenter.

Decreasing greenhouse emissions: HP joins World Wildlife Fund-US in conservation initiatives
    ENERGY STAR® qualified HP products:
     – HP computers
     – HP monitors
     – HP televisions
     – HP printing and imaging products
Intel
Intel was named the No. 1 user of renewable energy in
the U.S.—buying nearly 2.8 billion kilowatt hours of green
power, constituting 89% of our energy use. That’s more
than double the next largest tech user, Microsoft, with
1.2 billion kW hours.
“Intel is inching closer toward the goal of covering 100
percent of its corporate power use,”
Intel buys electricity from small hydroelectric sources,
solar energy providers, bio-gas companies, and wind-
energy firms.
Lenovo
Our entire product portfolio contains more recycled plastics than comparable computing
devices. ThinkPad L Series notebooks contain 85% recycled plastic content and ThinkVision®
L2251x wide monitors combine 65% post-consumer recycled plastic with 20% post-industrial
content. We’ve also optimized our packaging process and carved out 2 kgs of packaging material
from each PC shipment. In addition, by bulk shipping our products to you, we minimize waste
packaging at your site.
Lenovo products have earned the ENERGY STAR ® 5.0 rating: That means you can expect to cut
your computing energy bill by as much as 60%.
Cradle-to-Grave Concern for the Environment:
We’ve created a suite of tools to help you minimize your computing energy consumption – without
sacrificing performance.
Consider the energy and cost savings you can achieve by:
     – Using Lenovo’s Power Manager to centrally control computing energy consumption campus-wide. You
could cut energy use by as much as 69% on every desktop, every year.
     – Lowering LCD brightness during start up, shut down, log off, screen lock and screensaver modes to
         extend battery life.
     – Remotely deploying global power schemes and settings to boost energy-savings across campuses.
     – Matching processor and fan speeds to ambient noise levels via Active Thermal Management.
CISCO
Smart information technology (IT) practices can reduce the environmental impact of conducting
business, and help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) reduce expenses. With employee
awareness and participation, even the busiest SMB can adopt simple "green" strategies that require
little to no additional equipment or labor expenditures.
 Consider these environ-friendly IT strategies:
• Turn It Off: Reducing electricity consumption can help your business save money and the
      environment
• Consolidate:
     – Converge multiple networks into a single infrastructure to reduce the number of devices
     – Deploy wireless networks to facilitate more flexible work environments and reduce cabling and power
         requirements
• Shop "Green“:Purchase IT products that perform several functions instead of one. They are easier
to manage, cost less, and use less power than multiple single-purpose devices
• Throttle Back Employee Transport:
     – Encourage secure telecommuting by implementing VPN-based solutions.
     – Perform training, sales presentations, project collaboration, and other group activities by using telepresence
         technology
• Don't Throw It Away: Dispose of e-waste at government-certified facilities that are licensed for
    both hazardous waste disposal and recycling;
     – E-waste is a sinister problem: loaded with toxic metals and organic chemicals that contaminate soil, water,
         and air.
SONY
Sony sees global environmental conservation as one of the most critical issues for humankind in the 21st
century. Sony, as a good corporate citizen, works aggressively to conserve the environment and create a
sustainable society.
Procurement of Parts and Materials Used in Sony Products
Sony designates suppliers that cooperate in the production of environmentally sensitive products as Green
Partners. Sony established the "Sony Green Partner Standards" in 2001 with the aim of encouraging suppliers
to introduce Green Partner environmental management systems.
In 2002, Sony established a set of "Management regulations for environment-related substances to be
controlled which are included in parts and materials." Environment-related substances to be immediately
banned or reduced were identified, as well as their applications. To make sure that suppliers observe these
regulations, the "Green Partner Environmental Quality Approval Program" was prepared.
From April 2003, Sony procures parts and materials for its products solely from suppliers that have qualified as
Green Partners. This qualification is one requirement for suppliers wishing to both start and continue doing
business with Sony. Suppliers must renew their Green Partner approval every two years.
Procurement of Office Products and Other supplies
When procuring office products and other supplies, Sony places priority on selecting green products ("eco"
Mark products). Sony Group uses a regionally unified procurement system for office products and other
supplies. The system provides a catalog containing a considerable number of recommended items to be used
by Sony companies. As of September 2006, the catalog distributed in Japan lists approximately 8,200 items
bearing the "eco" mark, serving as an effective tool in speeding up the procurement of green products.
SAMSUNG
The environmental impact of new technology shouldn't be an afterthought. At Samsung, we believe our
products should respect the planet from the moment they're conceived to when they're in use, and
beyond.

Protect
Well before a Samsung product enters your home or office, we use the “Planet First” approach, which
considers a product‘s imprint on the environment and encourages eco-friendly design that respects the
planet. The end result is products that aren‘t just better for the earth but also save you money in the
long run.
 Conserve
As you use any product over the years, the electric bills and energy footprint start to add up. We look
for every opportunity to reduce the impact of owning and using a Samsung product, and dedicate
ourselves to making the most energy-efficient products available.
Renew
We love the newest technology as much as you do, and when you‘re ready to upgrade to the latest and
greatest, it usually means disposing of the old products. In order to reduce the amount of personal
electronics that end up in the waste stream, we built the most comprehensive national recycling
program in the electronics industry.
Microsoft
• Going Carbon Neutral:
Microsoft is instituting a companywide commitment to achieve carbon neutrality beginning in fiscal year 2013.
The foundation of our new commitment is an internal carbon fee, which will place a price on carbon based on
current market pricing for a portfolio of renewable energy and carbon offset projects.
• Making cities energy-smart:
More than half the world's people call cities home. And that figure is projected to grow in the coming years. As
such, Microsoft is working to ensure cities adopt cloud computing and data management technologies that will
address environmental challenges and help us achieve sustainability.
• Work to enable environmental sustainability:
We work with technology partners, government agencies, nonprofits, policymakers and researchers to
understand, measure, develop and deliver IT solutions that address environmental challenges.
• Cloud address environmental challenges:
When organizations move business applications to the cloud, they reduce energy use and their carbon
footprints per user by at least 30 percent. For small businesses the result can be even more dramatic, with
potential carbon savings of up to 90 percent per user.
• Takes Hardware recycle responsibly:
Whether your Microsoft hardware is ready to be recycled, or it has still got some life left and can be donated,
we make it easy for you to find a local recycling program, charity or school in need.
IBM
IBM solutions can help customers reduce costs and
systemically minimize energy, water, carbon
emissions and waste. IBM is helping customers to
become more energy efficient, implement new
ways to source, manufacture and distribute goods
and services in a more sustainable manner, enable
safe and renewable sources of energy and manage
resources at a macro level, transforming entire
industries. IBM takes a holistic approach to our
planet's challenges that combines our innovative
technology, deep business insight, and industry
expertise. Together, we can enhance the
sustainability of business-and our planet.
GOOGLE
Google is creating a better web that's better for the
environment. We’re greening our company by using
resources efficiently and supporting renewable
power. That means when you use Google products,
you’re being better to the environment.
   – Invested around $915 million in renewable energy.
   – Google data centre use 50% less energy then typical
     data center.
   – Environmental impact of a business using Gmail is up
     to 80 times smaller.
In order to support Green
Environment what we can do is….
• Turning your computer off when we are not using it .
• A top-of-the-line, brand-new efficient computer always uses less
energy than an old one is not enough Sleeping, hibernating &
  switching off is always important.
• Screen Saver on a monitor actually consumes more energy avoid
  it.
• Active computers generate significant amounts of waste heat.
which means if you’re leaving all your office PCs on overnight,
you could also end up paying more in cooling costs.
• Laptops are more energy-efficient than a comparable desktop.
• Before buying a Desktop/Laptop do see its Energy Star Rating
• Some Study says use Cloud computing means green computing
• Recycling old computers is the best way to save energy

  • 2. Why Companies opting for Environment Friendly or Green environment • Greening your business computing strategies is not only a smart way to enhance your brand in the eyes of customers: it can save you money in both electricity costs and equipment wear-and-tear. In fact, an overwhelming majority – 71 percent – of mid-size companies say cutting costs is their primary motivation for pursuing green IT strategies, according to research from the Aberdeen Group. • Green IT not only pays off for small- and medium-size businesses, but it does so many times over. Contd…
  • 3. • “We’ve found that companies that are most mature with green IT initiatives are seeing sometimes as much as four- or five-fold more savings in those areas than peers who don’t have green IT initiatives in place,” said David Hatch, senior vice president and general manager at the Aberdeen Group. • As one Canadian CTO pointed out in a 2009 IBM study, “Rising costs of fuel and electricity furthers the business case, so even if it wasn’t a green initiative, the business case is there. So, it’s not that we’re tree huggers, but we’re interested in saving money, as well as consumption and emissions.”

  • 9. CISCO Smart information technology (IT) practices can reduce the environmental impact of conducting business, and help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) reduce expenses. With employee awareness and participation, even the busiest SMB can adopt simple "green" strategies that require little to no additional equipment or labor expenditures. Consider these environ-friendly IT strategies: • Turn It Off: Reducing electricity consumption can help your business save money and the environment • Consolidate: – Converge multiple networks into a single infrastructure to reduce the number of devices – Deploy wireless networks to facilitate more flexible work environments and reduce cabling and power requirements • Shop "Green“:Purchase IT products that perform several functions instead of one. They are easier to manage, cost less, and use less power than multiple single-purpose devices • Throttle Back Employee Transport: – Encourage secure telecommuting by implementing VPN-based solutions. – Perform training, sales presentations, project collaboration, and other group activities by using telepresence technology • Don't Throw It Away: Dispose of e-waste at government-certified facilities that are licensed for both hazardous waste disposal and recycling; – E-waste is a sinister problem: loaded with toxic metals and organic chemicals that contaminate soil, water, and air.
  • 10. SONY Sony sees global environmental conservation as one of the most critical issues for humankind in the 21st century. Sony, as a good corporate citizen, works aggressively to conserve the environment and create a sustainable society. Procurement of Parts and Materials Used in Sony Products Sony designates suppliers that cooperate in the production of environmentally sensitive products as Green Partners. Sony established the "Sony Green Partner Standards" in 2001 with the aim of encouraging suppliers to introduce Green Partner environmental management systems. In 2002, Sony established a set of "Management regulations for environment-related substances to be controlled which are included in parts and materials." Environment-related substances to be immediately banned or reduced were identified, as well as their applications. To make sure that suppliers observe these regulations, the "Green Partner Environmental Quality Approval Program" was prepared. From April 2003, Sony procures parts and materials for its products solely from suppliers that have qualified as Green Partners. This qualification is one requirement for suppliers wishing to both start and continue doing business with Sony. Suppliers must renew their Green Partner approval every two years. Procurement of Office Products and Other supplies When procuring office products and other supplies, Sony places priority on selecting green products ("eco" Mark products). Sony Group uses a regionally unified procurement system for office products and other supplies. The system provides a catalog containing a considerable number of recommended items to be used by Sony companies. As of September 2006, the catalog distributed in Japan lists approximately 8,200 items bearing the "eco" mark, serving as an effective tool in speeding up the procurement of green products.

Conserve As you use any product over the years, the electric bills and energy footprint start to add up. We look for every opportunity to reduce the impact of owning and using a Samsung product, and dedicate ourselves to making the most energy-efficient products available. Renew We love the newest technology as much as you do, and when you‘re ready to upgrade to the latest and greatest, it usually means disposing of the old products.
