Social media & addiction By: Jen Mounsteven, Sylvia Gschoesser & Ankit Joshi
What is Addiction? “Addiction is related to a compulsion to consume something or engage in a set of behaviours to the point that it significantly interferes with a person’s life.” (M, Fabbri ). Internet addiction/pathological internet use is a type of impulse control disorder. Pathological online behaviour includes dependence, obsessive thoughts, tolerance, diminished impulse control, inabilility to cease, and withdrawal (M, Liebert).
M, Atkinson
How is Social Media Becoming An Addiction? New tools and websites are constantly being created. Information can be located within seconds using Web 2.0 Easily affordable and accessible to majority of population.
Advantages of Social Media Democratization of media. Relationships and conversation. Creativity and re-mix culture. Embrace your passion and identity. Community, sharing, and connecting. Increase transparency in government and organizations. Get the message out faster – and to more people
Disadvantages of Social Media Lots of great content still gets overlooked. Current lack of good filters creates problems finding the best content. Writers have problems delivering content consistently. Anonymity can engender polarization and hate. Information overload and social networking overload. Work/Life balance is hard to achieve. Using social media for marketing and advertising could be more time consuming than companies expect.
How Social Media Addiction Has Impacted Lives At Work/Relationships etc. Employee/employer relationships. Decrease in productivity. Impact your education when trying to take courses/seminars. Loosing your job and therefore not being able to support yourself or family. Potential for having online affairs (infidelity). Separation/Divorce. Poor grades in school.
How Social Media Addiction Can Affect Your Health Insomnia Anxiety Depression Sexuality ADHD (Admin,2010)
Managing Your Addiction Focus - Limit the number of social networks you use and those most relevant to your work and personal life. Use a Schedule - schedule your use of social media in the same manner you would check email, work out, play video games, etc. Call your network - If you don’t really know someone well or at all, don’t feel obligated to call a friend or follow them. Set a Timer - If you are still having issues with managing your social media addiction, having a timer with an alarm will help you know when you should be stopping and starting something else.
Social Media Demographic Data 195 million people are active internet users in the U.S. alone. Facebook ranks third among the sites visited by people who are 65 or older. The Average use of Facebook is 6 hours/month per user; reaches 56 % of the Internet Universe (Neilson , 2010).
Astonishing but true Twitter has reached a growth of 500% in a year. 11.2 billion videos are watched online per month, which is 17 % higher than 2008. There is an increase of 277% in the time spent on the social sites. 32 %of mobile users have also contributed to social network growth.(Neilson,2010).
Popularity Hike (Chappell,2011)
Other sites contributing to the Social Media use are : Digg.com Twitter.com MySpace.com LinkedIn.com
Top Networking Sites and Audience Trends (Neilson,2010)
Social Media in 2020 More interlinked More pervasive More ambient ( Webster, 2008)
Effects of social media in 2020 In asurvey conducted, it has concluded that social media sites will grow further. More identity disclosure. Increased political , social , economic Opportunities. (Woodruff, J.,2010)
Effects of social media in 2020 cont. The line between the online and offline social life will become blurred. Online social norms will influence the offline social life. Everything would be changed by the online revolution. (Woodruff, J.,2010)
Canadian facts (Hobden, 2011) According to a web measurement company, Canadians spend more time online then other country. Canada spends approximately 42 hours online in a month, according to measurement company comScore. In April, it was estimated 68% of the population of Canadians are spending their time online.
Canadian facts cont. YouTube is the most popular website for video watching in Canada, and in the world. 47% of all internet users between 50-64 years old have at least one social media account. 61% of adults had or used a social networking website in the past. 4 in 10 internet users aged 30 to 49 years old use the internet on a regular basis. (Hobden, 2011)
Social media addiction You must first realize you have an addiction and be motivated to seek help A growing body of research in the area of addiction suggests that Social Media Addiction Disorder is becoming a real problem. The most common one is Facebook /Twitter Addiction Disorder (FTAD). According to IdrisMootee “To be diagnosed as having FTAD, a person must meet certain criteria. At least 2 or 3 of the following 6 criteria must be present at any time during a 5-6 months period”.
1. The first thing is tolerance. This refers to the need for increasing amounts of time on Facebook to achieve satisfaction and/or significantly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of time. They often have multiple Facebook windows opened at any one time. 3 windows opened is usually a sign and over 5 you are helpless. 2. After reduction of Facebook/Twitter use or cessation, it causes distress or impair social, personal or occupational functioning, such as wondering why your Vista is so fast and improved, etc. These include anxiety; obsessive thinking about what is written on your wall on Facebook, etc. 3. Important social or recreational activities are greatly reduced and, or migrated to Facebook. Instead of sending an email you post a message on your friend’s page about cancelling a lunch appointment. You now stop answering your phone call from your Mom and insist she should contact you through Facebook chat.
4. This is getting serious if you start expressing your affection to your girl friend through Twitter, take out to eat at your FB Café World and kiss your girlfriend’s home page. 5. Your bookmark takes 15 minutes just to scroll from top to bottom or 8 of 10 people in your friend’s list you have no idea of who they are and you have over 1000 friends in your FB list. 6. When you meet people you start introducing yourself by following “see you in Facebook” or your dog has its own Facebook profile. You invite anyone you have met and any notifications, messages and invites reward you with an unpredictable high, much like gambling. (Jenn. 2011)
Treatment of internet addiction Practise the opposite- The goal of this exercise is to disrupt your normal routine, and re-adapt to new times of using the internet. External Stoppers- use concrete times such as doctor’s appointment to help you log off. Settings goals- Have reasonable goals, for example only 20 minutes on the internet, as opposed to 40 minutes. Abstinence- If you are using a specific applications such as a specific chat room, then deleting that application is the next step.
Cont. Treatment of online addiction Support groups- will help you interact with other people experiencing your addiction. Family therapy- maybe useful when the addiction has affected your marriage, or family relationships.
Online Addiction It is difficult to estimate how widespread addiction is. One in eight Americans suffer from at least one sign of problematic internet use. Internet addiction is a growing in many countries such as Italy, Pakistan, Iran, and Germany.
The future of social media Privacy expectations will change- sharing your personal information will be the norm, and people will become more accepting of it Search engines will be different- pushing of relevant content from our personal networks to the front of search results Ratings everywhere- in the near future, brands and businesses will place user ratings and accept open feedback on their actual websites Ratings will be more common
