4. David Chapman is known as the murderer of John Lennon. Chapman, who studied in the Covenant University in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, was hospitalized during his youth because of a mental illness. In 1977 he tried to commit suicide because he was an unsuccessful man. The novel, “The Catcher in the Rye” of J.D Salinger was so important for him that he wanted to model his life in the style of the book’s main character: Holden Caulfield.
8. In the morning of 8th December, 1980 he bought the newspaper “The Catcher in the Rye” in a New York library and in it he wrote “This is my declaration” and signed it. Chapman spent most of this 8th December near the access of the apartments where John Lennon lived, talking with other fans and with the porter.

Near 5.00 pm, when John Lennon and Yoko Ono, leaved Dakota to a session in the Record Plant Studios, while Lennon was walking to the car Chapman got near the singer and he signed one copy of his last disco “Double Fantasy”, although he stayed waiting until nearly 10.50 pm when Dakota and John Lennon returned to the car and Yoko Ono passed near Chapman one her way to the apartments.

Chapman walked and shot five times, four of the shots impacted on John’s back and shoulder and one of the shots perforated the aorta of Lennon causing excessive breeding, Chapman stayed in the scene, took his copy of the “The Catcher in the Rye” and he tried to read it until the police came. The policeman of the New York Department were the first to arrive and took him to Roosevelt Hospital in the Police’s car. Chapman was arrested and Lennon was declared dead at 11.20 pm after losing more than 80% of his blood.
12. Mark David Chapman served his sentence for twenty years until 2000, although he stayed in the Correctional cell of Attica. He was denied probation in four occasions because of the “unusual nature” of his crime.

In October 2006 after an audience of 16 minutes, although they recognized positive advances in the attitude of the prisoner by the hard and unnatural crime, they concluded that his liberty wouldn’t be convenient for the community. The next appearance before the Liberty’s Commission will be in October 2008, the fans of ex Beatle, wish and expect he remains in jail.
