I am an avid reader. I have all my favorite websites bookmarked and regularly surf on my
ipad at night. Recently I found a huge amount of popular articles on how to be happy at work.
I am fascinated by this topic. Why? Because it’s never been an issue for me. I love what I do
and I also understand that it might not be the same for others. Reading through the various
suggestions and ideas I decided to create a top 5ways to be happy at work for recruiters.

1. Love your job
I know it’s obvious and yet some people don’t. Let’s explore this more. If you don’t love
your job there are likely to be a number of reasons. Listen up here because this is important.

If people are not your ‘thing’ you will never get what, ‘working in recruitment’ is all about. I
agree it is a well-rewarded industry and yet it isn’t all about money. The foundation is related
to making dreams come true. The might be corny, yet think about it?
If you don’t feel like punching the air because your candidate is ecstatic when they phone you
to say; ‘I got it’ you need to check if you have a pulse!
2. Make sure you are working for the right company
This is a huge thing for many recruitment consultants. Admittedly any role has a settling in
period and adapting to new systems and processes takes time. Hopefully you will have done
your homework first before you moved to your new employer.
As a rec to rec company ourselves we ALWAYS make sure candidates and clients are a fit
and a match at all levels! Now we know many people reading this have not worked with us
yet so read on for some ideas.
The key thing here is values, or in plain English ‘what’s important to you’. If your values are
different to your new recruitment companies then it isn’t going to work. A few well-placed
questions and their answers at interview can be revealing.
For instance if; family, care and friendship are important to you and you are in a company
where there is no socializing after work and asking for an hour off to see your Mum in
hospital is frowned upon; it is unlikely you will be a happy recruiter.

3. Get organized
There is nothing more stressful than being disorganized. Stress doesn’t generally sit well with
happiness by the way. Batch your work and always have a plan for your week and you will
find that your world becomes much calmer than you ever thought possible.
4. Avoid negativity
I often quote a famous saying that; ‘you can’t hang around negative people and expected to
be positive!’ The truth is negative people wear you down and they are not fun to be around
either. I am not saying that your work life should be all positive thinking and crazy practical
jokes.
Just like we probably all agree that upbeat people, and their energy have a profound effect on
our mood, it is the exact opposite when it comes to negative people; they don’t have a great
effect. They sap energy, frustrate us and even worse; we end up feeling negative too!

5. Stretch yourself
Might sound counter intuitive and this can have a huge impact. Every recruiter will have
activities that are not their favorite thing to do. In the words of a famous sports brand; ‘just
do it’. It is a well-documented fact that doing things outside our comfort zone expands us; it
also gives us a high.
My own opinion is it makes us realize how good we can be. Do that consistently and your
self-esteem and confidence will grow. As that happens I guarantee your happiness meter will
soon be off the scale.
