NASA CLEAN AIR STUDY "A Study of Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement" "The NASA Clean Air Study was a project led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in association with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) to research ways to clean the air in space stations. Its results suggested that, in addition to absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis, certain common indoor plants may also provide a natural way of removing toxic agents such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. The study further suggested that efficient air cleaning is accomplished with at least one plant per 100 square feet (9.3 m2) of space, but was conducted under sealed space station conditions and research conducted since has shown mixed results in the home or office. The first list of air-filtering plants was compiled by NASA and published in 1989 as part of the study. Additional lists were later published in a book and paper by B. C. Wolverton, and focus on the removal of specific chemicals."

The Aerospace and Defense (A&D) industry in the US designs and manufactures products that carry more than three billion passengers worldwide on any given day as well as systems which are vital to our national security. In order to transition to lead-free electronics the A&D industry demands careful analysis and research into the performance, reliability and safety of these materials in order to maintain public safety and assure our war-fighters’ mission success is not compromised or risked. In this effort the College of Engineering at Tuskegee University and the Boeing Company has teamed to fill some of the many knowledge gaps that surround this new technology. The mechanisms of inanition and growth of tin whiskers and the Probability of occurrence of Induced Short are investigated. Since the formation of binary compounds are suspected of causing fractures in these new Pb-free solder alloys, Tuskegee is studying the migration of binary compounds as a root cause. The effects tin whiskers may have on the ability of conformal coatings to protect Circuit Boards from corrosion is also studied.
