1. Macro-typography, the overall structure and visual
organization of typography

2. Micro-typography, the details and nuances of type

Let’s start by dispelling some myths.

First, typography is not font
selection.

Second, content does not exist to
serve typography.

Typography exists to serve the
content.

Many desperate acts of design such as novelty fonts,
drop shadows, wild colors, backgrounds, outlines,
and gradients are done in lieu of a strong concept in
a vain attempt at creativity.

“Creative” aesthetics are secondary issues where
legibility is concerned.

Good typography is almost invisible
because it functions so well.

It’s a lot tougher to do than it looks.

So what exactly is typography?

Typography is what
language looks like.

Design & type gently collaborate to:

serve the reader and author

enhance understanding

organize thoughts and actions

acknowledge visual culture

Any job can be typographically sound.

Even yours!

You will need to:
think more,
read more,
edit more,
and design less.

But first, you have to master the five
methods of organizing information.

Information can be almost infinite...

Fortunately, there are only 5 ways to
organize it:
