Mohandas Gandhi led the Quit India movement in 1942 to pressure the British to grant India independence. Gandhi and the Indian National Congress offered to support Britain in World War II only if India was granted independence. When this was denied, Gandhi launched Quit India, calling on the British to leave India. Thousands were killed or arrested during the movement. Gandhi and other leaders were imprisoned but continued pushing for independence, which was finally granted in 1947.
