Understand the difference between seasonal flu, bird flu, and pandemic flu . We are concerned about the latter. Bird flu is being closely monitored by FAO – ( update the figures or adjust to audience – focusing on Asia or country statistics ) H5N1 strain has caused 172 human deaths (291 cases) globally since 2003 – mainly from close contact with domestic poultry. (source: WHO 11 April 07) More cases may have gone un-reported. Bird flu is spread via infections from contaminated poultry through trade and migratory patterns, with an impact on livelihoods. [In Africa, recent outbreaks point to a risk of infection from illegal trade, more than from wild birds.] Can mutate into human virus Pandemic flu could begin anywhere, and spread anywhere, with greater impact on countries with high population density and low development indicators. While the population usually has some immunity built up from previous exposures to seasonal influenza, the human population lacks any immunity to pandemic influenza strains . In seasonal influenza epidemics, infants and the elderly are most at risk of illness and complications. But during an influenza pandemic, even healthy, young people are at increased risk for serious complications. Last 3 pandemics this century: 1968 (3m deaths), 1957 (2m deaths) 918 (50m deaths)
