Singapoint
Singapoint uses Global Positioning System (GPS) and an internal compass in a cell
phone to allow users to point their phones at objects they are interested in to gain
information about them.
What it should help with:
Singapoint will help to create links between heritage sites and online resources and
services
Users will be have access to information on physical locations immediately
Why it is important:
Aids users to learn about Singapore’s cultural heritage
Foster stronger interracial ties among locals
Impact:
This system can potentially replace many traditional mediums for sharing cultural
information, replacing guidebooks, tour guides, maps etc.
Future developments: Only can learn about the past. Can also share information with
tourists about future developments e.g. IR, attract them to come back again
3. ■■■■■
Problem statement: People
People
Tourists
Students
Why? According to our
observations
Priority for users is to take
photographs at heritage sites
Survey results show that
users think the information
provided at sites is too
lengthy
Prefer small doses of
information
5. ■■■■■
Problem statement: Activity
To use Singapoint, users need to activate a mobile
phone application
When the user points the phone, the application uses
the vector information to identify the targeted object or
objects in a geographical database
Navigate on screen to access a plethora of information
and photographs or upload pictures
Pointing is a unique user-driven access method for
retrieving the information requested

6. ■■■■■
Problem statement: Context
Provide users with a convenient
way to obtain information that is
both fun and educational
They prefer to access
information as quickly as
possible, hence real-time
technology chosen
Alternative to lengthy and
wordy guidebooks, a one-stop
service which is centered
around the user
User-driven, human-centered
interface
7. ■■■■■
Problem Statement: Technology
MARA (Mobile Augmented Reality Application)
Possible to determine exactly what scene is viewed by
camera if absolute location and orientation of a camera
and properties of lens are known
Uses accelerometers in all three axes to determine
orientation, a tilt compensated compass for
heading, and GPS for positioning.
Since these sensors give the (approximate) location
and orientation, it is possible to annotate the viewfinder
screen with information about real world objects, once
the device is focusing on those objects.
8. ■■■■■
User Experience
Point cell phone in order to:
Locate heritage sites easily by highlighting them on
screen with Virtual signs.
Virtual images of Sultan Mosque
heritage sites can
be hyperlinked to
resources such as Archive images
archive photos and
History
future
developments.
Automatic labeling
of photos for easy
reference.
9. ■■■■■
User Experience
Allow users to view future developments of locations.
Leave or retrieve “post-it” messages as a form of feedback
and interaction.
Upload and share unique photos on the spot immediately.

Strengths and Criticism of Solution
Strengths
Intuitive interface is easy to use
Application can easily be used while being on the move
Gives comprehensive overview of the heritage site by linking past to present and
future
Provides various interactive elements to the user. For example:
Mobile Uploads: “Take your family on vacation with you virtually”
Post-its: Interact with other users and contribute to the service
Weaknesses
To what extent do technological barriers to use disadvantage people? Especially
those who
a) are not equipped with sufficiently advanced mobile phone.
b) are not tech-savvy enough to use or enable such technology.
Spreading information about the application is difficult especially in the case of
tourists who don’t have regular contact with Singapore
What would be the best way to market this technology to casual users?
Your feedback and ideas are most welcome!
