 Music during the 1960’s was very unique compared to
music from other time periods. Protest music had
been around for a very long time but became
 extremely popular in the 1960’s.
 The goal of protest was to inspire people to make a
change in a multitude of issue during the 60’s.
 Mainly it was as simple as a song about injustices
  concerning the U.S.
 Songs such as: Blowin’ in the Wind, Masters of War,
Talking World War III Blues, The Times They are A-
  Changin’.
 Bob Dylan
 Peter, Paul, and Marry
 Joan Baez
 There were many successes in the protest music movement. The protest music made
ordinary Americans in the North not wake of the racism and problems in the South more
aware of the horrors and the injustice. This helped because this attracted more white
supporters in the civil rights movement. Like Bob Dylan song “ Only a Pawn in the
Game” which talked about Madgar Wiley. Madgar Wiley was an African American civil
rights activist from Mississippi who was murdered. Another song written by Bob Dylan
about the racial injustice in the south was “the Lonesome Death of Hattlie Carroll”. The
song talked about the killing of the 51 year old African American barmaid Hattie Carroll
by the rich young tobacco farmer from Charles county, William Derereux “Billy”
Zantinger.( Zantinger was only sentenced to six month in county jail for the Murder) Bob
Dylan and his friend Jan Baez were extremely involved in the civil rights
movement. They often sang in rallies and they actually also sang in the March on
Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I have a Dram” speech. Bob
Dylan also had many other protest songs for different causes. He had the song “Master of
War” protesting the Vietnam War and ‘”A hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” which is thought to
be talking about the Cuban missile crisis. Bob Dylan was the king of protest music and
because his music it helped many ordinary Americans that were mot aware of the
situation actually realize the truth. This spread the popularity of the cause which then
    helped the cause.
 Every protest song that was created in the 60's is an example of a
document for the protest music movement. One important song
was quot;Eve of Destructionquot; by Barry McGuires. The song entered
the single charts in August 1965. This song was a mile stone in
protest music, because before this song no other protest song
reached number one on the singles chart. This song was very
controversial at the time because its extreme pessimism, in the
end many radio station directors banned the song. Another
important song was quot; Blowin’ In the Windquot; by Bob Dylan. This
song is the most popular and famous song of the era. This song
is talking about African Americans rights and how they have
been through a lot and the song is asking the question quot;how long
  until they get their freedom?quot;
 This movement is remembered still today through
  music and the artists.
 Things are different today because this genre of music
has inspired many of the songs that we listen to today.
 There are many different stereotypes placed for this
movement. One stereotype is that the people in the
movement were all hippies! (which most were but not
  all of them)
 Another stereotype was everyone in the movement
  were heavily involved in drugs.
