8. What is “inherently FR polyester?”
In a process pioneered by Trevira Corporation, the
polyester has a component (typically phosphorous)
added to the liquid polymer.
This phosphorous component causes the melting point of
the polyester to be lowered.
This lower melting point causes the polyester fabric to
shrink away from the flame more quickly than regular
polyester.
If combustion does takes place, the burning phosphorous
creates a halogen gas around the burn site.
This halogen gas shuts off the oxygen necessary to
maintain combustion and the fabric self-extinguishes.
