I was invited by my friend, Ian Bacungan, to speak at PUP Open University's "Entrepreneurship and Digital Marketing" seminar last month. More than 300 students attended the event and I thought I was so privileged to speak in front of the future entrepreneurs of our country.
I talked about "Your Personal Brand in the Digital Age". It was a two part presentation, which I began in talking about establishing a personal brand premise then segued to transcending personal brand to social media and other digital media. I would like to give my full credit to my friend, JR Hernandez, for giving me the material about brand premise, which I adapted to suit "personal branding".

Paige Harbison, “Here Lies Bridget”
Good morning/afternoon, everyone! I am Gian Viterbo. I work by day and I write by night. I work for a reputable insurance company as Digital Media Solutions Chamption, and I own a small website, Gadget Pilipinas.
This is the point where I don’t want you to read what is on this slide. Well, unless you want to get bored and eventually leave this seminar. But kiddingly aside, I hope you don’t mind if I let you stare on this slide for 2 seconds.
I would like to read a quotation from a social media guru, Jill Celeste: “Social media is a fantastic way to show your brand personality, allowing you to authentically connect with customers in creative ways.”
We all live in the world where social media is becoming ingrained to people at very fast pace. As someone who works for a company, or who already works at home, what we say, do or show on social media reflects the kind of person we are… or the personal brand we exude. This morning, allow me to talk about kickstarting and managing your personal brand in the digital age.
But before I start everything, I would like to show you a video inspired by a short story entitle, “The Giving Tree”. Does anyone know what this story is?
VivaKi, part of the Publicis Groupe, is the global leader in digital advertising solutions, delivering world-class technology, products and solutions.
What is your main takeaway from this experience? And what do you think is its relevance to your personal brand?
In the story, “The Giving Tree”: its premise tells us that unconditional love knows no boundaries.
This is the tree’s personal brand. This defined the story – its central theme.
In the story, “The Giving Tree”: its premise tells us that unconditional love knows no boundaries.
This is the tree’s personal brand. This defined the story – its central theme.
But more than anything else, its premise so defined, it unapologetically trumped the story’s plot.
We define premise as “a statement that is assumed that is true and from which a conclusion can be drawn.” No matter what happens, what always subsists is THE PREMISE. What defined the tree’s personal brand is its premise. No matter happens in the story, the tree’s unwavering love for the boy will never fail.
Your personal brand is defined by your brand premise.
Now at this point, I would like to ask you all a question, if the tree’s brand premise is “unconditional love knows no boundaries”, what about you? Don’t worry – there’s actually a step on how to create your own brand premise.
The essential steps in order to formulate your brand premise is:
To understand the “dramatic issue”.
Commit to a “movement” or take an action to counter the issue.
Realize a fulfillment.
I would like to share my personal brand premise: “Strive for Excellence and Distinction with Humanity as compass.”
During your break later, think deep about your brand premise. Don’t rush things. It would normally take 3-4 days to come up with a well-thought out brand premise. 1 day to think about each step. Once you come up with one, commit yourself to it and everything shall fall into place.
Your brand premise will exude in the quality of work you do. It will also give you direction and inspire you to have your own visual identity. And also, your brand premise will define your social media reputation.
You have to be extra careful though in executing this. Because if you communicate a confusing and not well-thought of personal brand premise, you may fail.

Another thing that you may want to do is to setup, optimize and monitor your Klout score. It’s one of the best ways to check your reputation and to receive endorsements from fellow Klout users. Mind though that this isn’t the only tool to measure your social media influence.
Have you tried googling your name? How certail are you that you don’t have any detractors? This is one step that you should do, not just for reputation management purposes, but to also see what people are writing about you. Use Google Alerts to set alerts when your name – froma new entry - appears online.
Lastly, understand that your actions matter in social media a lot! Be responsible and – as what GMA7 said years ago in a campaign they launched – think before you click. Before you even click that send or post button, know that in reality, THERE IS NO UNDO BUTTON on social media.
I would like to end by reading an excerpt of Paige Harbison’s Novel, “Here Lies Bridget”.“I want you to understand how people see you, and how your actions matter...You must learn that your place in the world is important. You've been given the power to affect people, just as we all have, and it's important -- no, vital -- that you do the right thing with it.”
