Following our survey of the environment of our school we
have found:
Things we are happy with:
• Fresh, daily produce used and special diets are
catered for on request
• The school is looking at biodiversity on a department
level
• Tree planting scheme
• S1 John Muir award
• Links being set up with different schools (Mr Rorie)
• The school is looking at being ‘A Rights Respecting’
school
• Seating for corridors being bought through sponsored
walk money
• Eco schools notice board
• Celebrate pupil achievement within Eco Schools through
Dynamic Youth Award and Celebration of Success
• Environmental curriculum review to be undertaken
• Government/HMIE inspected school canteen menus
• S1-S4 PE (110 mins approx)
• Lunch extra curricular clubs
• Anti-bullying policy
• Home Economics always use raw ingredients
• The Eco committee will focus on litter in some way
• Departmental reviews of litter have been undertaken
• Bicycle storage area
• Sponsored walk event
• Departmental traffic surveys

• Let the community know what is happening with Eco
Schools when work is underway
• Developing the school grounds
• Becoming a ‘Fair Trade’ school
• Measure our Global ecological footprint
• Water cooler available in every faculty
• Eco schools in school improvement/development plan
• Buddy system advertised better throughout the school
e.g. who can help/why/when etc
• Extra curricular after school club that caters for all
age ranges
• S5/S6 (50/55 mins approx) PE
• No access to garden or an allotment for growing food
• Further visits/outside speakers needed to educate
pupils on food and the environment
• Use food grown in school grounds in cooking projects
• No school litter policy
• Whole school survey of litter with results shared with
everyone
• Litter audit carried out revealing the types of litter
found
• Very little involvement in Community/National litter
pick ups
• No rewards or sanctions in place to discourage
littering
• No school travel plan which is shared with parents

• School does not use the recycling facilities it has
effectively.
• The pupils and staff who carried out the review
believe there are not enough bins inside and outside
the school. Also, that they are not in the right place.

• The pupils and staff who carried out the review
believe that not all scrap paper was saved for
recycling or reused. However, Many classes do recycle
but there is not a system in place.
• Not all classes have a recycling bag. No collection of
these bags has been put in place.
• No compost bins
• No sources of renewable energy used
• There are still some old windows that are not insulated
properly
• No record of water usage
• No automatic flush controls or hippo systems in the
toilets
