3. The Indian Army is the land based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian army stands at: Soldiers in Active service: 11,00,000 Reserve troops : 9,60,000 It is the world's second-largest standing army the first being the Chinese Army. The primary responsibility of the army is to ensure National security and the defense of the Republic of India from external aggression and threats. In addition to this the army is also responsible for maintaining peace and security within the country (Example: The Indian army was called in during the Gujrat Riots of 2003, to bring the situation under control). During Natural disasters and calamities divisions of the army get engaged in Rescue and humanitarian relief operations. During international conflicts, divisions of the army could be deputed to Peace keeping task and humanitarian relief operations in conflict zones

4. The President of India serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Army. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), a General, is a four star commander and commands the Army. The Army is one of the largest divisions of the Indian Defense Services where personnel are trained for land operations. The regular Army consists of armed personnels (referred to as troops), their equipment, weapons and military bases. As country to country terrain is different, the requirement of troops, combat gear, support systems and Military formations also differs. Therefore it is necessary for a country to maintain combat ready troops to meet different challenges. Hence the Army of any country is a very large organization various levels and divisions of work. The Army is made up of regiments and corps, each of which has a specific military function. New recruits join a regiment of a corps which allows them to develop their interests and skills within the vast scope of work of the Army.

Nature of Work and Career prospects Unlike other careers, a career in the armed forces demands very high levels of physical and mental fitness along with a high level of intelligence that you are graded on. Continuous training and exercises are part of the routine to keep troops combat ready. High mobility and tremendous fire power are required. The Army is made up of regiments and corps, each of which has a specific military function. New recruits join a regiment of a corps which allows them to develop their interests and skills within the Army. Defense has always been the mother of research as every technique primarily developed in the history of Mankind is related to defense. Some of the greatest innovations have their roots in defense causes: the Internet, Civil Engineering, Telecommunication, all modern day theories of Management, Supply chain solutions all root back to the organization of armed forces. Hence Defense personnel have the opportunity to work on and with the latest in Science and Technology, not accessible to any civilian. Careers in the armed forces were a matter of prestige and in some cases a family tradition.

7. The Army is a huge organization which has people from diverse backgrounds, branches and qualifications. The demand in terms of aptitudes varies with the position and job assignment. There are doctors, engineers, pilots, sailors, computer professionals, accountants, paramedics, dentists, vets, educationists, legal experts, administrative and logistics officers, and the largest group is of the combatant force. Combat arms are actively involved in fighting while other arms such as transport, supply, medical services provide a range of essential support services. Entry to the Army is through a basic training as Officer/Junior Commissioned Officer or Jawan. The aptitude for service is tested at the time of selection for each of the branches. Special emphasis is laid on physical fitness, personal discipline and commitment.

Pay and Perks Following the Six Pay commission the Armed Forces get attractive pay at par with the Private sector for corresponding positions and a Life style and perks that cannot be matched by any private employer; finest clubs, golf courses, medical facilities and ample opportunities to indulge in adventure and sports, are few of the facilities an officer is entitled to. The government goes a step beyond securing the life of an individual by providing facilities like subsidized housing, free medical for self & family, canteen facilities, group insurance cover, soft loans for house and/or vehicle etc. to ensure the well being of the personnel’s family. As in any career in the armed forces; emphasis is laid on the development and well being of an individual in service to the nation.
