2. Focus Groups-
A focus group is a way of researching it is a qualitative way
and it is asking people in groups to discuss there opinions,
observations and attitudes towards a product such as a film
being released and they receive a critics point of view and a
rating.
When a film is coming out is often when they create a focus
group e.g. one full of journalists will watch it and give there
views and when its published viewers will read it and decide
if they would like to watch it or not.
I've never been in a situation where id have to use this way of
researching but it may come up in the future.
3. Questionnaire-
A quantitative research method is a questionnaire you can get
information from, it is a very practical way and large amounts
of information can be collected from a large number of people
in a period of time, it is a cost effective way.
A questionnaire will be used in film industries to find out
what type of films or genre people are interested in. It helps
find out quantitative research which is to quantify data and
generalize results from a sample to the population of interest.
I have used questionnaires in past experiences for example
when I had to conduct research in another unit for my games
design, I designed a questionnaire and it benefited me a lot.
4. Test Screening-
A test screening is a screening of a movie or television show
before it has been released , they do this in order to gauge
audiences reaction and observe there views on it .
It works by audiences being selected from a cross-section of
the population, the audience are normally given a
questionnaire as well which they give there feedback on what
there opinions are about what they watched.
I have been to a test screening before it was for a
documentary that had just recently been made and they
needed peoples opinions on it.
5. Set top boxes-
Another method is a set top box , The box records exactly what
programmes an person/people watch, and the panellists indicate
who is in the room watching by pressing a button on a remote
control handset. This is a research method because an organisation
will want to measure there audiences.
BARB numbers are extremely important to commercial television
stations. The trading model that is used by television companies
and advertising agencies depends on the number of people
watching the shows, and the commercial attractiveness of those
people. The advertising agency will pay the television station a
certain amount of money based on the number of people watching
a show. The BARB numbers are used to work this out. Higher BARB
numbers usually mean more advertising revenue for the television
station.
I have never participated in this method.
