2. The HWA Private Car Park.
The Hadley Wood Association has
upgraded it’s car park. This work came at a
considerable cost (£45000) which we as a
small village hall could never have raised
without using the donated
remains of the Parkway
Fund and with help from
Enfield
council.
Our
concern now is how future
repairs will be paid for. We
have looked at different
ways of raising money
towards the next repair and
have discussed the issue at
the AGM and at meetings
with representatives of the
residents and parents of
children attending Hadley
Wood Primary school.
As a result of these
discussions, our plans for those using the
Hadley Wood Association Private Car Park
are as follows. All users are requested to
apply for a permit stating their car make and
registration number. Users who are already
members of the Hadley Wood Association
or its associated clubs (the Tennis and
Bridge Clubs), the Pre-school and Dance
school and who are therefore already
contributing to the HWA will for the time
being receive a free permit. Those who do
not fall into these categories, mostly parents
of children attending the Primary School,
will be asked to join the Hadley Wood
Association (£50.00 a year). Please contact
the HWA by telephone (020 8449 7193) or
email (hadley.woodassoc@btconnect.com)
for an application form.
A permit will be issued specific to that
vehicle. This permit is self adhesive and
needs to be easily visible on the front
windscreen.
The parking disc will show the vehicle
registration number. If more than one vehicle
is used for delivery and or collection, then
further permits will be
issued. Maximum parking
time will be restricted to two
hours at any one time for all
users between the hours of
0700 to 1800 hrs Monday to
Friday. Blue Badge holders
will be allowed free parking.
Please register details with
the Association, and display
the Blue Badge whilst
parking. Fees for residents
hiring the hall will include a
levy for car park use.
No parking is allowed on
the double yellow lines or
the grass verges. As with most car parks, a
parking space is not guaranteed. Due to the
cost involved there is no intention to mark
out individual car parking spaces with white
lines.
Commuter parking is not allowed under
any circumstances. Policing of the car park
will be carried out by Association staff.
People repeatedly using the car park without
a permit will be warned and then fined.
I wish to emphasize that this is a pilot
scheme which will be reviewed at the end of
the year. No doubt there will be anomalies in
the scheme and individual cases will be
assessed.
We think that most users of our private car
park will appreciate the reasons for this
action and hope that this small levy of £1
per week will not be seen as excessive. For
years the HWA has accommodated all
visitors to the car park free of charge
but it is now clear that unless we manage
the car park properly, prevent its use
by commuters and raise some regular
income for repairs then future irreversible
deterioration in the car park will be
inevitable.

Healthcare Update
I have recently joined the team of
Therapists at Hadley Wood HealthCare on
Thursday’s. I have been a Holistic facilitator
since 1996 and I continue to train and
broaden my skills. I initially trained as an
Aromatherapist and in a quest to extend my
knowledge of the Holistic Mind/Body
connection I then also trained in
Reflexology, Reiki, Indian Head Massage
CranioSacral Therapy and Ear Candling. I
have dedicated some of my time to raising
money for and working with people with
cancer at Cherry Lodge Cancer Care in
Barnet and St Margaret’s Hospital in
Epping. In my experience in working with
people with a variety of health problems I
have gained great insights into how holistic
treatments give a sense of well being and
how they can be helpful in coping with the
stresses of everyday life as well as dealing
with traumatic life events. When stressed
continually your body is in flight/fight mode
which causes the release of stress
hormones resulting in depletion of energy,
interrupted sleep patterns, or even panic
attacks. Holistic treatments such as CST,
Reiki etc can help bring the body back into
balance helping to improve the functioning
of the central nervous system, eliminating
the negative effects of stress, strengthening
resistance to disease, and enhancing
overall health. I use Cranio Sacral Therapy
as the basis of each treatment. This makes
me aware of where restrictions are and
how you are feeling and then through
discussion we can choose the therapy best
suited to your needs. So if you feel the
Holistic approach would be of benefit to
you please call for more information or
book an appointment.

Hadley Wood Dance
Centre
Our next production will be ‘The
Nutcracker’ at the Wyllyotts Centre,
Potters Bar this Spring.
Performances will be on Friday 21st
March at 7.00pm and on Saturday 22nd
March at 3.00pm and 7.00pm. 135
pupils aged 4 up to adult will be dancing
and all classes are showing much
excitement and enthusiasm about their
forthcoming stage appearances. The
Ballet School first opened in Hadley
Wood just over 45 years ago. Since
taking over the school in January 1984,
I have taught many hundreds of children
from Hadley Wood and the surrounding
areas and I would be delighted if any
former pupils could come to our
production of ‘The Nutcracker’. We
would really like to have a full house for
every performance. If you, or anyone
you know, would like to come, tickets
can be bought via the Wyllyotts Box
Office from 20th January onwards, either
in person at the theatre, by telephoning

4. Farewell 2013. What
happened in Hadley
Wood?
January started cold for the annual Tug
of War. Anne and Gareth Evans left us
for Scotland and Peter Jones retired. Our
shops continued to suffer from poor
parking arrangements and Thai 18 closed.
A petition of 500 signatures to the Council
to improve the parking was acknowledged.
Our local youth football club (Hadley Wood
and Wingate) continued to thrive at
Bartram’s Lane field. The Security service
celebrated its 11th birthday, the Bridge club
its 44th, the Golf Club its 91st and the
Tennis club its 113th. WW2 Spitfire pilot Tom
Adams celebrated his 91st birthday and
Stella Ross-Collins her 100th. Both long
term Hadley Wood residents. In March the
footpath running alongside the railway was
upgraded and on the other side of the
tracks Rosemary Keane, a much loved
teacher at the Primary school, retired. A
development on the site of what was
Middlesex University at Cat Hill horrified
local residents as well as everybody else
except for the beneficiaries (the University
and the developers). Barnet General
Hospital was upgraded at the expense of
Chase Farm. Barnet Market was saved.
Hadley Wood residents raised money for
charity. Nicky Forsyth cycled from Panama
to Nicauragua for Genesis, Rachid and
Sensev El-Ahmadi ran a marathon for
Chickenshed, the Golf club a fundraising
day for Prostate Cancer UK, the Hadley
Wood Running club ran the Race for Life,
the Gavin family cycled for the Josie
The Gavin family
Rachid and Sen. Marathon.
Reddington Foundation and local resident
Mrs Ella Glazer OBE quietly continued her
life’s work for the Celebrities Guild of Great
Britain and its many charities. A new
headmaster was appointed to St Martha’s
and Julie Hall published her book Creative
Cookery in memory of Sue Clark, it’s profits
going to the Peace Hospice. Dog Shows,
Mad Hatters tea parties and Summer Fetes
were enjoyed by many and the annual
Fireworks event by none (it did not happen).
The HWA car park was repaired. Thymaria
opened its wonderful restaurant, Paninis
kept us alive and Henry V1 was performed
outdoors in the woods at Monken Hadley.
Chris Hepworth our tennis coach sadly left
us to work closer to home, trees blew down
on St Jude’s day and it seems to have
rained ever since.

Tournament in memory
of Debbie Hyman
Debbie (with husband Richard and
daughter Chloe) moved to Lancaster
Avenue in 2000 and she joined the Club
soon after. I remember Chris introducing me
to Debbie and suggesting that we should
partner each other in the Ladies Team the
following year. Unbeknown
to me, Debbie had just
been diagnosed with
breast cancer and was
about to embark on a
course of treatment but
Debbie nevertheless was
keen to play immediately
after her treatment.
After our first match
together, I realised what a
truly gifted player she was
and was so happy that we
were playing together, but
6
more importantly, that it was clearly the
beginning of a very dear friendship. Her
strength and determination throughout her
battle was incredible and never wavered.
Debbie's treatment continued for the next 8
years but in that time she notched up 2
ladies singles titles and 3 ladies doubles
titles at the Club and a singles title at the
David Lloyd Hatfield – a hugely inspiring and
courageous achievement. In early October
2013, Hadley Wood Tennis Club held a
tournament to mark five
years since Debbie lost
her fight against cancer.
The tournament matches
were organised expertly
by Chris Hepworth, the
Club coach. There was a
fantastic turn out with all 5
courts being used - a total
of 38 people came to
support the day, including
past and present HWTC
members as well as many
of Debbie’s friends.

Play began in some early sunshine and
then the heavens opened. But it failed to
dampen our spirits and play continued
through the rain! The event was a huge
success and a fitting tribute to a very special
friend and, as one club member said, 'a
lovely lady and great tennis player'. Debbie
was all of that and so much more.
The event was supported by a number of
local businesses who generously donated
prizes for the raffle including Creme; Hadley
Wood Health Care; and Thymari in Crescent
West; and also the restaurant Skewd in
Cockfosters. A special vote of thanks goes
to those Club members who made so many
delicious cakes, donated raffle prizes and
helped behind the bar. We raised an
amazing £2,122.01 which was donated to
Marie Curie, a charity that does fantastic
work and was very close to Debbie's heart.
This figure included a very generous
donation from Richard, Debbie's husband,
who kindly pledged to match what we
raised on the day.

Judy Quickenden, Supervisor
Accuro/Alpha Car Hire.
Always interested in other people’s jobs
(especially those organisations which support
this magazine) I went down to New Barnet
over the Christmas holiday to meet Nick
Adams and Richard Gates who run and own
Accuro/Alpha cars.
Why Accuro? Accuratus, they tell me with
some relish, is a Latin word which refers to taking
care of, attending to (duties/guests) giving
attention to or performing with care. “That’s our
motto” says Nick.
They have been running this business for
thirteen years from their office in Edward Road
and with their experienced controller Steve
they have collectively 56 years of experience
in this field.
“What is important in the private car-hire
business” I ask. “Promptness, reliability and
trust” Nick answers. “It is essential that
customers trust the company and its
operatives”. Now they pick up unaccompanied
children, escort elderly people to the doctors
and shops as well as sometimes helping
customers to check in at the airports. Punctuality
is as important. “We must arrive on time or a little
before. The switchboard is the nerve centre of
this organization and it is manned 24/7” says
Nick. “If there is a problem getting to the
customer the driver will ring in and we will
arrange immediate back-up. We run 15 -20 cars
and have access to more. We are, by the way,
very very careful about who we employ. They
have to fit in, know the job and the geography,
behave politely and of course have their
enhanced CRB checks and Public Carriage
Office/Transport for London licences in order”.
“Why is the company called Accuro and
Alpha” I ask. “We manage them as separate
entities” Nick explains. “The Accuro service is the
top end of our range of cars” Executive cars
such as the big Mercedes models etc. Alpha is
a standard service with normal saloon cars
which has a lower tariff.
Six and seven passenger vehicles are
available across the range” Any special trips?

ANSWERS
The autumn term is always a busy one. The
children are happy and have thoroughly
enjoyed exploring our extended play area,
creating different scenarios within their play
whilst developing their physical fitness at
the same time. They have also become
more daring as their confidence has grown!
The end of term was full of activities
culminating with our Christmas Concert and
Party. The children worked very hard to
learn new songs and impressed their
parents when they performed our nativity.
They truly rose to the occasion and enjoyed
themselves. It was also the first time our

“We will take clients anywhere” says Richard
“from a quick trip to the shops to ..er.. well Rome
was probably our longest job closely followed by
Berlin”. “What about picking up clients from the
West End or airports. What do you charge and
isn’t it difficult to coordinate pick-up times? “Well
for the West End we would charge £35 for a
standard saloon car” answers Nick. “There is no
congestion charge for us of course as we are
exempt through our operators licence. We
arrange a pick up point as close to the theatre or
restaurant as we can and keep in contact by
mobile phone”. What is your customer base like?
“Accuro have a very wide range of clients from
private individuals to large corporate blue chip
companies and a wide range of celebrities…
though we do not divulge names as discretion is
paramount” says Richard studiously ignoring my
interested look. “Hadley Wood customers are a
very important group and represent about 20%
of our 10000 jobs a year”.
Leaving the office I reflect that it is not difficult
to see why this firm is so successful. Good
service and good communication allied with
attention to detail. Those in charge always
available. Sounds to me like a recipe for
success.
