Yosemite National Park in partnership with The Ansel Adams Ga!ery presents

                GATEWAY EXPRESSIONS
                  STUDENT ART AND POETRY CONTEST
            An event celebrating the creative spirit of the youth in our gateway communities
                              and the inspiration and legacy of Yosemite.

 GATEWAY EXPRESSIONS Student Art and Poetry Contest is open to all students, grades K-12, at-
   tending a school or youth program associated with the gateway community school districts of
           Yosemite National Park. Please see contest rules for eligible school districts.

       Selected student artwork and poetry will be featured in an exhibit at The Ansel Adams
    Gallery in Yosemite Valley, and students will be acknowledged at a special awards ceremony on
                                    Saturday, October 29, 2011.

Teachers and youth leaders are encouraged to organize submissions of art and poetry for their students.
Teachers of selected artwork or poetry will receive a complimentary Parks As Classrooms program. The
               program may be scheduled as a classroom visit, Skype program, or held in
                                       Yosemite National Park.

Artwork or poetry must be original and should communicate a connection to Yosemite’s natural or cul-
tural history. Subject matter can focus on wildlife, plants, scenic areas, iconic features, seasonal changes,
                   conservation and protection, or the legacy that Yosemite represents.

                    Entries must be received by Friday, October 7, 2011.

                       Special thanks to the Yosemite Conservancy for making this event possible.
CONTEST CATEGORIES: Gateway Expressions Student Art and Poetry contest is open to students in
grades K-12, in school districts associated with the gateway communities of Yosemite National Park. Teach-
ers and youth leaders of students are encouraged to organize submissions by their students for either indi-
vidual art or poetry, or group art pieces. Winning artwork and poetry will be chosen in five categories for
individual entries: K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th; and one category will specifically be for group
art pieces.

ELIGIBLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS: Schools or youth programs located within these school districts
are eligible for participation: Bass Lake Joint Union School District; Bass Lake School District; Big Oak
Flat-Groveland School District; Chawanakee Unified School District; Eastern Sierra Unified School District;
Mariposa County Unified School District; Yosemite Unified School District.

RULES FOR SUBMISSION CHECKLIST (submitted art, poetry must comply with the following):
    All art and poetry work must be original and that communicates a message about Yosemite.
   Each student may submit no more than one entry in his/her individual category AND may contribute
toward no more than one entry in the group art piece category.
   Artwork must be 8.5” X 11”, 14” X 16”, 16” X 20” or 20” X 24” in size. Poems should not be more than one
page on 8.5” X 11” size paper and not exceed 32 lines in length. Written poetry must be either typed or legi-
bly written in ink.
   Artwork must be two-dimensional, no greater than two inches deep. (Heavy, three-dimensional artwork
requiring special mounting is not eligible.)
    How to mount your art:
           Winning artwork will be mounted on matting boards by the Yosemite National Park Education
        staff and displayed in The Ansel Adams Gallery via wall hangers, therefore, please submit your entry
        simply mounted on backing paper (if applicable). For example, mount a drawing to a durable piece of
        construction paper.
           If submitting art in chalk or pastel, the piece must be sprayed with fixative to prevent streaking
        and smudging.
    Please attach completed entry form(s) with tape or other fixative to the back of each art/poetry piece.
   Parent/guardian and student signatures are required on each entry form. Teacher signatures in lieu of par-
ents’ will not be accepted.
   All art and poetry work must also have student's name, grade, school, and a contact phone number writ-
ten on the back of their work, in case the entry form becomes separated from the art.
   A brief description (60 words or less) of what the artwork communicates about Yosemite, must be at-
tached to the entry form. Descriptions should be typed or neatly printed, and include the title of the art
piece.
   Group art pieces must include entry forms from EVERY student whose work is included in the group art
piece. For group art pieces, only the TOP entry form is required to include a description of the artwork.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: To be considered eligible, artwork and poetry must include complete,
signed entry forms, follow all instructions, and be submitted on time. Please mail entries to: Gateway Ex-
pressions Student Art & Poetry Contest, Yosemite National Park Education Branch, PO Box 254, Yosemite,
CA 95389. Art or poetry entries along with a completed entry forms must be POSTMARKED by Friday,
October 7, 2011. SORRY, NO EXCEPTIONS. Entries may be given to a Yosemite National Park Education
Branch staff member by appointment only and must be prior to Friday, October 7, 2011. Please call (209) 375-
9490 to make an appointment.

NOTIFICATION OF CONTEST WINNERS: Contest winners will be contacted by phone.

AWARDS CEREMONY AND ART EXHIBITION: The winners of the art and poetry contest will
have their artwork and poems displayed at The Ansel Adams Gallery. The winners will be recognized at a
reception held at The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley. Each winner will be notified by phone prior
to the reception.

    Reception at The Ansel Adams Gallery: Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

All students, family members, teachers, friends, and the general public are invited to attend the celebration
and view winning artwork.

AWARDS: Each winning student will receive an award and an official recognition. Entrants may have their
work publicly displayed or used in the Yosemite National Park publications, web site, or other products.
Teachers/ Youth Leaders of first-place winners in each of the six categories will receive a certificate redeem-
able toward a future Parks As Classrooms ranger-led program. The certificate should be used by November
30, 2012. (Certificate is not redeemable for cash.). Parks As Classrooms ranger-led programs are subject to
availability and must be scheduled no less than three weeks in advance for a date to be arranged with Yosem-
ite National Park Education Staff.

WAIVER AND RELEASE: Through submission of artwork or poetry, and written descriptions, con-
testants and their legal guardians hereby grant the National Park Service, or its authorized representatives
and contractors, non-exclusive reproduction and publication rights, including student names, to the works

Waiver and Release: I hereby grant and assign to the National Park Service the non-exclusive
right and permission, in respect to the original art and poetry work being submitted to use, re-use,
publish, re-publish, modify, and otherwise reproduce, and display in any and all media, for any pur-
pose whatsoever, without compensation to the child, parents, guardian, or teacher; and to use my
child's name to identify the author of the work in connection with my participation in Yosemite
National Park’s Gateway Expressions Student Art and Poetry contest. I agree that the National
Park Service and its assigns have the right to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, distribute or
display and use these materials in whole or in part, for government and non-government purposes,
in any manner or media (whether now existing or created in the future), in perpetuity. Use of this
material shall include, but not be limited to, audiovisual programs; museum exhibits; websites; pub-
lications; product artwork; and project publicity. Additionally, I waive the right to inspect or ap-
prove any use of the material and any right to royalties or other compensation arising or related to
the use of the material. I hereby hold harmless and release and forever discharge the National Park
Service from all claims, demands, and causes of action which I, my heirs, representatives, executors,
administrators, or any other persons acting on my behalf or on behalf of my estate have or may
have by reason of this authorization. I have read this release before signing below and I fully under-
stand the contents, meaning and impact of this release. I agree to indemnify and hold the Govern-
ment harmless for any and all losses, claims, expenses, suits, costs, demands and damages or liabili-
ties on account of personal injury, death, or property damages of any nature whatsoever and by
whomsoever made, arising out of the activities associated with the project in which I am taking
part.

Gateway Expressions - Student Art and Poetry Contest

Yosemite National Park in partnership with The Ansel Adams Ga!ery presents GATEWAY EXPRESSIONS STUDENT ART AND POETRY CONTEST An event celebrating the creative spirit of the youth in our gateway communities and the inspiration and legacy of Yosemite. Artwork by Mash Alexander GATEWAY EXPRESSIONS Student Art and Poetry Contest is open to all students, grades K-12, at- tending a school or youth program associated with the gateway community school districts of Yosemite National Park. Please see contest rules for eligible school districts. Selected student artwork and poetry will be featured in an exhibit at The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley, and students will be acknowledged at a special awards ceremony on Saturday, October 29, 2011. Teachers and youth leaders are encouraged to organize submissions of art and poetry for their students. Teachers of selected artwork or poetry will receive a complimentary Parks As Classrooms program. The program may be scheduled as a classroom visit, Skype program, or held in Yosemite National Park. Artwork or poetry must be original and should communicate a connection to Yosemite’s natural or cul- tural history. Subject matter can focus on wildlife, plants, scenic areas, iconic features, seasonal changes, conservation and protection, or the legacy that Yosemite represents. Entries must be received by Friday, October 7, 2011. Please see contest guidelines for information and entry forms. CONTEST CATEGORIES: Gateway Expressions Student Art and Poetry contest is open to students in grades K-12, in school districts associated with the gateway communities of Yosemite National Park. Teach- ers and youth leaders of students are encouraged to organize submissions by their students for either indi- vidual art or poetry, or group art pieces. Winning artwork and poetry will be chosen in five categories for individual entries: K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th; and one category will specifically be for group art pieces. ELIGIBLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS: Schools or youth programs located within these school districts are eligible for participation: Bass Lake Joint Union School District; Bass Lake School District; Big Oak Flat-Groveland School District; Chawanakee Unified School District; Eastern Sierra Unified School District; Mariposa County Unified School District; Yosemite Unified School District. RULES FOR SUBMISSION CHECKLIST (submitted art, poetry must comply with the following): All art and poetry work must be original and that communicates a message about Yosemite. Each student may submit no more than one entry in his/her individual category AND may contribute toward no more than one entry in the group art piece category. Artwork must be 8.5” X 11”, 14” X 16”, 16” X 20” or 20” X 24” in size. Poems should not be more than one page on 8.5” X 11” size paper and not exceed 32 lines in length. Written poetry must be either typed or legi- bly written in ink. Artwork must be two-dimensional, no greater than two inches deep. (Heavy, three-dimensional artwork requiring special mounting is not eligible.) How to mount your art: Winning artwork will be mounted on matting boards by the Yosemite National Park Education staff and displayed in The Ansel Adams Gallery via wall hangers, therefore, please submit your entry simply mounted on backing paper (if applicable). For example, mount a drawing to a durable piece of construction paper. If submitting art in chalk or pastel, the piece must be sprayed with fixative to prevent streaking and smudging. Please attach completed entry form(s) with tape or other fixative to the back of each art/poetry piece. Parent/guardian and student signatures are required on each entry form. Teacher signatures in lieu of par- ents’ will not be accepted. All art and poetry work must also have student's name, grade, school, and a contact phone number writ- ten on the back of their work, in case the entry form becomes separated from the art. A brief description (60 words or less) of what the artwork communicates about Yosemite, must be at- tached to the entry form. Descriptions should be typed or neatly printed, and include the title of the art piece. Group art pieces must include entry forms from EVERY student whose work is included in the group art piece. For group art pieces, only the TOP entry form is required to include a description of the artwork. 2
  • 3. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: To be considered eligible, artwork and poetry must include complete, signed entry forms, follow all instructions, and be submitted on time. Art or poetry entries along with a completed entry forms must be POSTMARKED by Friday, October 7, 2011. SORRY, NO EXCEPTIONS. Entries may be given to a Yosemite National Park Education Branch staff member by appointment only and must be prior to Friday, October 7, 2011. Please call (209) 375- 9490 to make an appointment. NOTIFICATION OF CONTEST WINNERS: Contest winners will be contacted by phone. AWARDS CEREMONY AND ART EXHIBITION: The winners of the art and poetry contest will have their artwork and poems displayed at The Ansel Adams Gallery. The winners will be recognized at a reception held at The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley. Each winner will be notified by phone prior to the reception. Reception at The Ansel Adams Gallery: Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM All students, family members, teachers, friends, and the general public are invited to attend the celebration and view winning artwork. AWARDS: Each winning student will receive an award and an official recognition. Entrants may have their work publicly displayed or used in the Yosemite National Park publications, web site, or other products. Teachers/ Youth Leaders of first-place winners in each of the six categories will receive a certificate redeem- able toward a future Parks As Classrooms ranger-led program. The certificate should be used by November 30, 2012. (Certificate is not redeemable for cash.). Parks As Classrooms ranger-led programs are subject to availability and must be scheduled no less than three weeks in advance for a date to be arranged with Yosem- ite National Park Education Staff. CLAIMING ART PICK-UP DAY Please mark your calendars!: ARTWORK: ALL entries in Saturday, November 5, 2011, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM the contest Location: In front of The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley MUST BE PICKED-UP on SATURDAY, Nov. 5, 2011, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Please note that unless prior arrangements have been made, all artwork not picked up by 4:00 PM on Oct. 15, becomes property of Yosemite National Park. En- tries cannot be returned by mail. WAIVER AND RELEASE: Through submission of artwork or poetry, and written descriptions, con- testants and their legal guardians hereby grant the National Park Service, or its authorized representatives and contractors, non-exclusive reproduction and publication rights, including student names, to the works submitted. 3

Waiver and Release: I hereby grant and assign to the National Park Service the non-exclusive right and permission, in respect to the original art and poetry work being submitted to use, re-use, publish, re-publish, modify, and otherwise reproduce, and display in any and all media, for any pur- pose whatsoever, without compensation to the child, parents, guardian, or teacher; and to use my child's name to identify the author of the work in connection with my participation in Yosemite National Park’s Gateway Expressions Student Art and Poetry contest. I agree that the National Park Service and its assigns have the right to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, distribute or display and use these materials in whole or in part, for government and non-government purposes, in any manner or media (whether now existing or created in the future), in perpetuity. Use of this material shall include, but not be limited to, audiovisual programs; museum exhibits; websites; pub- lications; product artwork; and project publicity. Additionally, I waive the right to inspect or ap- prove any use of the material and any right to royalties or other compensation arising or related to the use of the material. I hereby hold harmless and release and forever discharge the National Park Service from all claims, demands, and causes of action which I, my heirs, representatives, executors, administrators, or any other persons acting on my behalf or on behalf of my estate have or may have by reason of this authorization.
