• Maintaining balance during your swing is a key
to consistency. Outstanding ballstrikers rarely
lose their balance. When combined with
rhythm and tempo, balance is also a key to
more power. If you rush your swing, you lose
your balance, resulting in mis-hits and
inconsistency. Imagine trying to swing a club
while standing on ice. It would be hard to
complete the swing. Even if you did, it
probably wouldn’t go far.
3. Five Drill That Ingrain Balance
• so where does great balance come from? It starts
with your feet. That’s because your feet help
control how you shift your weight during the
swing. Shift your weight improperly and your
swing suffers. Do this often enough and your golf
handicap suffers as well. By focusing on how you
shift your weight, you can ingrain a better swing,
one that delivers awesome power to the ball.

4. 1. One Leg Drill
• This drill is used in golf lessons to enhance a
student’s balance and strengthen his or her front
leg, so it becomes a solid post to coil around. Use
a 7-iron for the drill:
• Go to an open space where you can swing the
club freely. Place a plastic ball where you would
normally position a ball to hit a 7-iron. Address
the ball as you normally would with your club in
hand. Now lift your back foot off the ground.
Balance yourself. Now try to hit the plastic ball.
5. 2. One Hand Drill
• This is another drill often used in golf lessons. It
teaches you that your body weight should always
shift in the same direction as your swing:
• Find some room where you can swing a club
without obstruction. Take your normal address
position. Now swing the club back with your right
arm only (left-arm for left-handers.). Swinging
back one-handed forces you to shift your weight
to your back foot.
6. 3. Lift Your Front Leg Drill
• We teach students in our golf instruction
sessions that the most critical phase in weight
shift is when the club starts down. The drill below
targets this phase of the swing.
• Take your normal address position. Swing the club
back while lifting your front leg off the ground.
Balance yourself there for a split second. Now
start your downswing by stomping the front foot
down, forcing your weight to transfer from your
back side to your front side and setting up a
powerful move into the ball.
7. 4. Closed Eye Drill
• You can practice this drill at home. All you need is an
area where you can swing a club freely.
• Take your normal address position. Now close your
eyes and feel your balance at address. You should feel
your weight on your front foot. Make a backswing and
stop at the top. Feel your balance on the inside of the
back foot. Now start your downswing by feeling your
weight move to the front foot. Stop at impact. Your
weight should be on the front foot. Continue your
swing to the finish and hold, feeling your weight on the
front foot, and tap your back toe on the ground.
8. 5. Feet Together Drill
• Hitting balls from a normal stance lets you make mistakes
during the swing without falling over. You can commit all
manner of faults—move your head, reverse pivot, sway—
and still hit the ball. But hitting balls with your feet together
makes the golfer make a perfect turn.
• Go to a driving range. Now set up to a ball as you normal
would. Take your front foot and move it next to your back
foot. Now hit the ball without losing your balance. With
your feet together, your body automatically finds the most
efficient swing to keep you from falling over. Hitting shots
with your feet together encourages a golfer to make a
perfect turn off a single axis.
