The Montagnais were hunter-gatherers who lived in the spruce forests and low hills along the St. Lawrence River in summer, moving inland for hunting in autumn. They traveled by canoe in summer and snow shoes in winter, using toboggans to carry cargo. Father Paul Le Jeune accompanied the Montagnais to learn their language and customs while trying to convert them to Christianity, though they were more interested in his foreign beliefs than converting. He endured many hardships including the harsh climate and carrying cargo on the journey.
