President’s Message
Hi everybody,
I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend. I am blessed as we are spending the weekend with my family
in Melbourne, celebrating key events in my grandnephew & nieces lives.
Congratulations to Haran and his family who made a huge contribution to the “Let’s Dance Illawarra 2016”
event. A very energetic evening of performers and fundraising to support The Bear Cottage.
Thank you for highlighting some of the club’s major activities at the event and advancing Rotary’s “Serving
Humanity” message.
Tonight we have a presentative from Amanda Firkin. We look forward to hearing about Youth in Rotary and
in particular, the Rotaract progress and 2016 plans.

Guest Speaker
Rod Tilden introduced JULIE HAW to tell us a bit about herself and her involvement in
Rotary. Julie was born in KAISHING TAIWAN in 1968 and migrated to Chicago USA
with her family at age 3. In the years living in Chicago she attended American
schooling and emerged with a degree in Russian Languages.
In 1988 the family moved to warmer climes in Arizona USA where she remained until
a proposed short visit to Australia which has become permanent. Julie’s Grandfather had a long association
with the Rotary Club of Kaishing and this, coupled with her desire to help others, led her to Rotary in the Hills-
Kellyville.
She lives in the Hills with husband David and three children, David, Rose and Lily.
Julie has had a long career in administration with companies such as: Motorola.
Amex, Baptist Community care, Genworth Financial. Silver Chain, Woolworths and
Uniting Church, where she now works. Her hobbies and interests include Country
Music, Reading, Classic Cartoons, and family.
Thomas Cann offered a vote of thanks to Julie for her presentation.
The Hills Rotaract Changeover
John and K Joan van den Burg attended the Hills Rotaract Club Changeover on Friday
July 29, where they presented them with a Certificate of Appreciation for the
support they have given us particularly on our community projects.
This 99 year old photo shows the members of Rotary Club One (Chicago) getting
ready to attend the 1917 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Don't
they all look resplendent in white?!
It is quite something to think that 100 years later Rotary is still going strong and will
celebrate the 100 years of the Rotary Foundation at the Rotary International
Convention 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia
“Now is the time to enable our Foundation to serve humanity for centuries to come, by making
sure it is financially strong and remains recognized internationally for its good work.”
– 2016-17 Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee

The Rotary Foundation Centennial
In 2016-17, our Rotary Foundation turns 100. That’s a
century of Rotary members changing lives and improving
communities all over the world. And that’s definitely
something worth celebrating.
Through our Foundation, Rotary members have
supported thousands of projects to provide clean water,
fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education,
and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in
the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.
The centennial is the perfect time to share this impressive record with the world. Join us in making
sure that every Rotary member and people in every community know about the vital work of Rotary
and its Foundation.
Not my Job – Rtn. Mark Huddleston
I have often been asked to help clubs with recruitment initiatives or give a presentation on what clubs need to
do to attract more members, and one of the first points I always make at such presentations is that it’s
everyone’s job, and if everyone isn’t prepared to work on it, no matter how good the idea, you’re unlikely to
get the most out of your efforts. Your whole club needs to be on the same page with this, and they need to
want it bad enough.
