1. Task 5
Last week we sent out a questionnaire to some of our readers aged between 20
and 40 from around the world who were fans of Ben Klock in order to find out
more about how they got into techno and some information about their relation
to Ben Klock. They came from a wide range of places such as the UK, Germany
and the USA here are some of the responses we got:
When/where did you first start listening to Techno?
A reader from Berlin gave us a first hand account of how he was introduced to
techno and talks about some of the clubs that were where the scene began.
“I was about 18 and I first discovered techno through my friends. They listened to
this sort of music and often went to Tresor, which is a club in Berlin. I first properly
got into Techno when they took me to Tresor with them. It was like nothing I had
seen before; it wasn't your conventional club. it was located in the abandoned
Wertheim department store, in the vault underneath the building. This place was
grimy and industrial, just like the music which was being played, it was relentless
and you could feel the pounding throughout your body, I will never forget that
night, the vibe was amazing, nobody cared what other people looked like or
anything apart from having a good time!”
When/where did you first hear Ben Klock?
“I first heard Ben Block back in 2004 when Berghain opened and I started going
there, he held a residency there (and still does) I went to one of the nights he played
and it went off, it was mad and I loved his style of mixing.”
There were a wide range of answers for this question, this shows the diversity in
the age of his fans and goes with the notion that there is not a specific “type” of
person who listens to his music.
Who would you like to see do a collaboration with Ben Klock? And why?
“Carl Craig, because he is a pioneer of the Detroit sound and Ben is a pioneer of the
Berlin sound, so I think it would be really cool to see a combination of these two
types of sound. Plus they are two big names and great producer so I know for a fact
they would come up with something truly amazing together.”
For this question we had a wide range of answers that ranged from Aphex Twin
to truncate. This was one of our favourite answers because we think the
collaboration would be great!
2. What is your favourite release by Ben Klock? And why?
When asking this question it became apparent that many people preferred his
mixes as a whole rather than his individual tracks although they still liked his
productions but some stated they were better as part of a mix as opposed to by
their self.
“Josh wink - are you there (Ben Klock remix) not sure why but I really like the
swaying motion of the track and the whole vibe is gives off. I can picture myself at
Berghain with this blasting through the Funktion One soundsystem”
When asking if the recipients of the questionnaires whether or not they had the
chance to see one of Bens famous ‘marathon’ sets at Berghain only one of them
said that they actually had witnessed this. This is testament to how exclusive the
club is and how hard it is to get into.
Another question that we asked was “if you could introduce Ben Klock to one
song or artist what/who would it be?” obviously with such an open question
there are bound to be a wide range of different responses but we think that the
answers we got were great! They included people such as Benjamin Damage,
Traumprinz and someone even said “anything punk rock”
